The National Domestic Violence Hotline is being flooded with a record number of people asking for help. The hotline, which operates 24 hours a day, took in more than 570,000 calls, texts and online chats last year, a jump of more than 30 percent from the year prior. The increase has put a strain on the organization.“When we see spikes like we did last year, we're just not prepared to respond to that kind of growth,” says National Domestic Violence Hotline CEO Katie Ray-Jones. Ray-Jones believes there are a couple reasons for the spike, including the #MeToo Movement, as well as high-profile domestic violence cases like the one involving R&B singer R. Kelly and former White House aide Rob Porter. “We know that people see threads of themselves in that story and it prompts them to either one, recognize ‘I don't want my current situation to turn out like that, so let me reach out for help’ or they're recognizing ‘Gosh, this is really serious and I need to connect to someone right now for help.’” Ray-Jones says the hotline is on track to set another record. So far this year, more people are reaching out for help than last year at this time. The hotline is federally funded, which is why Ray-Jones came to Washington, D.C. to talk with members of Congress.“We did a congressional briefing to highlight the increase in volume that we've received, as well as we received our 5 millionth contact several weeks ago,” she says. “And we wanted to illustrate and commemorate that bittersweet moment for the organization and recognize there's 5 million. A man is accused of setting fire to cardboard that a homeless man was sleeping under in Southern California. The Glendale Police Department says 32-year-old Richard Smallets intentionally set the fire on a sidewalk near a popular shopping center on Sept. 12. Police responded to the scene at about 1:22 a.m. to assist firefighters called to extinguish the fire. An investigation revealed the homeless man was awoken by the odor of smoke, realized the cardboard above him was on fire and unsuccessfully attempted to put out the flames with bottled water. Later that afternoon, police say detectives retrieved video surveillance from a nearby business that captured a man intentionally lighting the cardboard on fire and then taking photos. Officers later came in contact with Smallets at nearby Central Park. After questioning, he was identified as the suspect and subsequently placed under arrest on an arson charge. The next day, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed an attempted murder charge against Smallets. His bail has been set at million. The motive behind the crime is unknown at this time. 1133

A Florida man is facing a charge of attempted murder after body camera and dashcam video showed him dragging a sheriff's deputy with his car during a traffic stop.Rocky Rudolph, 38, of Apopka, Florida, was pulled over by Seminole County Sheriff's Deputy Aaron Blais Saturday.The body camera footage released by the Seminole County Sheriff's Office Sunday shows the deputy and the driver having a calm, friendly interaction in the first few minutes of the traffic stop after Blais tells Rudolph he pulled him over for having tinted windows. The two men even joke with each other about the suspect's unusual name.But things turn sour when Blais asks Rudolph if he has any marijuana in the vehicle before telling him to turn off his vehicle.Instead, Rudolph throws the car in drive as the deputy hangs out of the window screaming for the driver to stop.Rudolph briefly stops and Blais points a gun at him ordering him to stop the car before Rudolph pulls off again toward a highway.Dashcam video shows the deputy fall off of the vehicle as it speeds away.The sheriff's office searched for Rudolph following the incident and he was taken into custody shortly before 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the department said.Blais was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released from the hospital Saturday, according to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.Rudolph is being held without bond in Seminole County Jail on charges of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, and resisting an officer with violence, according to the county jail roster.A court appearance for Rudolph is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday.CNN has not determined whether Rudolph currently has legal representation in this case. 1764
