Congressman Duncan Hunter is continuing to stand up for his political livelihood, one year after a federal campaign fraud indictment.Voters in the 50th District re-elected Hunter in November, despite 60 federal charges of campaign fraud against him and his wife Margaret. Now, the congressman is facing attacks and challenges from members of his own party as he pushes to renew his term in 2020. Plus, Judge Thomas Whelan ruled federal prosecutors can use details of Congressman Hunter's alleged affairs with five Washington D.C. area women, allegedly funded with campaign contributions, as part of their case. "I think voters in the 50th District have said, and they clearly spoke in November of 2018, that they want to wait for the courts to decide and give them a clear judgment before they decide on the political fate of Congressman Hunter," said Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at UC San Diego. Hunter's trial has now been pushed back to mid-January to wait for a decision on his appeal to have the case thrown out. That means voters will be getting their absentee ballots while the trial is ongoing. "They're going to have very litlte time to make up their minds after this trial," Kousser said. In 2020, California will hold its primary on March 3. In prior years, the primary would be held in June. In addition to Campa-Najjar, a Democrat, a number of San Diego-area Republicans have challenged Hunter. That includes Former City Councilman Carl DeMaio, El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells, and former Escondido Mayor Sam Abed. Hunter's spokesman and his attorney both declined to comment Wednesday. 2160

Country singer Gretchen Wilson was arrested in Connecticut after allegedly becoming belligerent with police at a local airport. CBS affiliate WFSB reported Wednesday morning that the Connecticut State Police was called to Bradley International Airport near Hartford on Tuesday. There had apparently been a minor disturbance on an incoming flight. Authorities said Wilson became belligerent during an interview. CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — A copy of a school quiz entitled "Does Nikolas Cruz Deserve to Die?" recently gained a lot of attention on social media.The quiz was meant to be an assignment on the death penalty. School officials say it was distributed to students at Coral Glades High School in Coral Springs, Florida last week. The high school is just a few miles away from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where Cruz shot and killed 17 students and staff earlier this year.Stoneman Douglas parents like Cindy Levine are furious."These people lost their children, for crying out loud," Levine said. "And my son could have been one of them."The outrage spilled onto social media. Stoneman Douglas survivor and student activist Cameron Kasky, quoted in the quiz, tweeted "I cannot begin to express how pathetic I find this." School board critic Andrew Pollack, who lost his daughter in the school shooting, tweeted: "This is absolutely despicable." And, "Does anyone @browardschools have a brain?"School staff posted a message on the school website Friday saying they were unaware of the assignment.It said the material was from a subscription-based publication and has been pulled.The school said it's instituting a review and regrets the incident occurred.Scholastic, the publisher, sent WPLG a statement that their intention was to "... provide a platform for meaningful conversations around the history, civics and social impact of the death penalty.
