CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A fire at an apartment in downtown Chula Vista sent two children to a hospital early Saturday, authorities said.Firefighters responded at about 2:20 a.m. to a report of a fire at an apartment above a business in the 300 block of Third Avenue, Chula Vista Deputy Fire Chief Harry Muns said.Two people were reportedly walking by the home when they saw smoke and flames and rushed to wake everyone.Smoke was visible from the back of the building upon arrival, Muns said. Crews were able to put the fire out quickly, and they found a 10-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy inside the unit where the fire began.The two were given medical treatment for smoke-related injuries.Five people were displaced by the fire -- including three from adjacent units, Muns said. 796

(KGTV) — A suspected drunk driver had to be pulled from a vehicle after a rollover crash in the South Bay overnight.Police said the driver drove into two parked cars while driving southbound on Broadway at about 2 a.m. Saturday. After hitting one vehicle, her vehicle rolled into the middle of the street.The vehicle she struck collided with a nearby SUV, police said.Emergency crews extricated the woman from her vehicle and took her to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries.Chula Vista Police later arrested the woman for driving under the influence.No one else was injured in the crash. 620

CINCINNATI -- Kroger Co. has joined Dick's Sporting Goods and Walmart in tightening its policy on gun sales after a school shooting killed 17 in Parkland, Florida. The Wall Street Journal reports the Cincinnati-based grocery chain will stop selling guns to anybody under 21 at 43 Fred Meyer locations, mostly located in western states."Recent events demonstrate the need for additional action on the part of responsible gun retailers," the company wrote in a statement to CNBC. "We believe these are common sense steps we can take immediately that are in line with our values and our vision." On Wednesday morning, Dick's Sporting Goods, the nation's largest sporting goods retailer, announced it would?stop selling assault-style weapons and raise its minimum age for gun purchases to 21. (KGTV) -- Hope, peace, unity and love are some of the simple words painted on rocks that Maria Gutierrez walked by each morning."I was thankful and I would look for more and more stones," Maria said.Maria just moved to the neighborhood and was surprised to learn who was behind those painted messages."One day I was walking my dogs and I saw Ava carrying a couple of stones and just quietly putting one down," Maria described.Ava is her neighbor, an 8-year-old doing her part in lifting others in difficult times."I’s because a lot of people aren’t happy right now. My mom and I were trying to make the people in our neighborhood happy," said Ava.I asked Ava what works like hope meant for her and she replied, "if someone doesn’t think they can do something, there’s hope they’ll make it."Her mom Cyndi said others neighbors have joined in their "rocks of hope" movement."We noticed other stones placed around the tree. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — As schools try to navigate the future of in-person education in the era of coronavirus, Southwestern College is already returning some students to campus. The Southwestern College Higher Education Center in Otay Mesa welcomed nursing and health occupational students, along with students in the public safety program, back to campus June 1. These students are training to fill jobs like nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and more.Dean Sylvia Cornejo said since March, they have been using technology for remote learning, but the school has been planning on bringing these students back as quickly as possible because of their careers and the need for essential workers right now.RELATED: San Diego Office of Education releases guidance to reopen schools“The students got as far as they could with online instruction but really we needed to be able to bring them back to campus for all of their practical labs,” she said.She said this location has returned to campus because of the nature of the students, but most of the five Southwestern College locations will remain remote for the fall term.
