DALIAN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday called on the young in Russia and China to pass on the friendship forged during World War II.Medvedev made the call in a meeting Sunday morning with more than 20 veteran Chinese and Russian soldiers who participated in China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945), part of WWII.The Russian leader, who arrived in the northeast China's port city of Dalian Sunday morning, first laid flowers at a monument commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs. In the following meeting with Chinese and Russian veterans, Medvedev said Russians and Chinese forged profound friendship in their joint fight against the Nazis, and such friendship constituted the solid foundation for the relationship between the two countries. The Russian President thanked Russian and Chinese veterans for their contributions to peace. He also thanked China for renovating the memorial, which was one of more than 70 memorials commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs throughout China. All those memorials had been refurbished to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory of WWII.Dalian was the first stop of Medvedev's three-day visit to China. This was also Medvedev's second state visit to the country since he assumed presidency in May 2008.Later Sunday, Medvedev flew to Beijing to continue his state visit to China.During his stay in Beijing, Medvedev will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and call on other Chinese leaders, including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao.Medvedev will also travel to east China's metropolis of Shanghai, where, on the next day, he will meet with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping and attend events marking the Russia Day at the ongoing World Expo, which runs from May 1 to Oct. 31.

BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Guangya made solemn representations to Japanese ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa on Sunday evening to express strong indignation and protest against Japan's prolonged detention of a Chinese skipper."The incident created by the Japanese side has severely damaged China-Japan relations," said Wang, stressing how the situation develops completely depends on what choices the Japanese side will make. The Japanese authorities on Sunday afternoon extended the detention of the captain to Sept. 29.Two Japan Coast Guard patrol ships and the Chinese fishing boat collided in waters off the Diaoyu Islands on Sept. 7. The Japanese side illegally seized the Chinese trawler and fishermen, and continued to illegally hold the Chinese captain despite firm protests by the Chinese side.Wang warned China will take strong counter measures if the Japanese side fails to release the Chinese captain immediately and unconditionally."Japan shall bear all the consequences that arise," he noted.Sources with the Foreign Ministry said earlier Sunday China had already suspended bilateral exchanges at and above the provincial or ministerial levels, halted contact with Japan on the issues of increasing civil flights and expanding aviation rights between the two countries.A bilateral meeting on coal has also been postponed. In the mean time, the number of Chinese citizens traveling to Japan as tourists has already declined.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- China and the European Union (EU) are forging a reliable partnership as one's stability, growth and prosperity are in the interests of the other, said an EU envoy on Thursday.Serge Abou, EU Ambassador to China, made the remarks before Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attends the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM8) and the 13th China-EU summit from Oct. 4 to 6. The ASEM summit, under the theme "Quality of Life: Achieving Greater Well-being and More Dignity for all Citizens," will focus on global finance and economic governance, sustainable development, and social and cultural exchange between Asia and Europe.China, as the second largest economy in the world, plays an important role in the meetings, Abou said, adding that the growth of Chinese economy contributed much to the world, especially amid the financial crisis.Abou described the relationship between China and the EU as "maturing partnership," with trade as "the first taproot" of the ties. The 27-member EU is China's biggest trade partner while China is the EU's second-largest trade partner and most important source of imports. This year, China-EU trade has witnessed remarkable growth and bilateral trade volume exceeded 300 billion U.S. dollars for the first eight months, up 36.2 percent compared with the same period last year. However, Abou was not satisfied with the figures. Trade and investment are not big enough considering China's 1.3-billion population, said the ambassador. He looks forward to more cooperation between the two countries in agriculture among other sectors."We welcome Chinese rise and Chinese prosperity," said Abou, adding that the EU would like to be more "engaged" in China's growth.Besides, China and the EU are also cooperating in energy, climate change and higher education, said the envoy. There are 200,000 Chinese students in Europe and tourists to European countries are also increasing, he added."The Chinese language is the second foreign language studied in my country France in secondary schools, just after English," said the EU official, adding that, by contrast, it was very "exotic" to learn Chinese when he was young."That means we have a solid basis to deepen our relationship," he added.
