BERN, SWITZERLAND, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Parliamentary leaders of China and Switzerland on Saturday exchanged views on bilateral ties, parliamentary exchanges and mutual concerns and agreed on closer exchanges between legislative bodies of the two nations for better Sino-Swiss ties.Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), expressed satisfaction over the significant progress in Sino-Swiss relationship during the recent years at a meeting with Pascale Bruderer, president of the National Council of Swiss Federal Assembly, and Erika Forster- Vannini, president of the Council of States of Swiss Federal Assembly.The development of Sino-Swiss relationship has brought substantial interests to both people and China looks forward to working together with Switzerland to further develop the comprehensive friendship and mutual-beneficial cooperation, Wu said. They agreed to conduct closer parliamentary exchanges with China.A further development of Swiss-Chinese ties is interest of Swiss government, legislative bodies and people. BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese spent less in June amid surging commodities prices and floods in many of the country's southern provinces, according to the latest reading of an index that gauges consumer confidence on Friday.The Bankcard Consumer Confidence Index (BCCI), compiled by the Xinhua News Agency and the national bank card association China UnionPay, slid to 86.30 in June, down 0.09 points from May.Compared with the same period last year, the June BCCI figure was 0.24 points higher. The index hit a record high of 86.89 in March.The reading in June indicated Chinese bank card spending was affected by surging commodities prices and the floods in southern China.Consumers also turned more conservative in spending due to sluggish performances of domestic stock markets and property markets in June.China's month-on-month economic growth rate is likely to have slowed in June given signs that electricity demand declined remarkably that month and the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for China's manufacturing sector dipped 1.8 percentage points for two months in a run to 52.1 percent in June.Xinhua and UnionPay jointly started compiling the BCCI index in April 2009 based on bank card transaction data and analysis of structural changes in urban consumption. 

CHANGSHA, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Ten people have been confirmed dead after two manganese mines in central China's Hunan Province were flooded two weeks ago, local authorities said Monday.Water gushed into the two mine pits run by Leixin Mining Development Co. and Wenhua Manganese Co. in Huayuan County of Xiangxi Tujia-Miao Autonomous Prefecture at about 6:10 p.m. on July 20, trapping a total of 13 miners underground.Rescuers pulled three miners alive out of the mines on July 29 and sent them to hospital. Currently, they are in stable condition, a spokesman with the Hunan Provincial Work Safety Administration said Monday.Rescuers had earlier retrieved seven bodies, and they found the last three bodies on Sunday morning, the spokesman said.Local authorities are further investigating the cause of the accident, he added.

TIANJIN, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Scotland will strengthen cooperation with north China's industrial city Tianjin in trade, finance, education and new energy, according to a joint statement signed by officials from the two sides Thursday."The joint statement highlights Scotland's interest in developing long-term ties with Tianjin in areas such as financial services and renewable energy," said First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond, who signed the document.Salmond, who led business groups to Beijing and Shanghai prior to his visit to Tianjin, said he hoped Chinese and Scottish firms could ink deals on renewable energy, finances, and life science.With a potential wind power generating capacity of 36.5 billion watts, the use of wind power in Scotland ranks among the top in Europe. Scotland is also a leader in developing offshore wind power farms.
