LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGT) - An historic hiking trail in La Jolla will reopen after a 30-year battle with homeowners.The Princess Street trail goes from the top of the cliff at Princess Street to the water near La Jolla Shores. For years, access to the path had been closed because of a dispute over who owned the land leading to the trail.A homeowner claimed it was on their property and put up a gate blocking access to the trail. Over the years, brush and vegetation had overgrown the trail, making it impossible to hike on.In 2012, the Coastal Commission ruled that the gate was on public land and must be reopened.Now, the Environmental Center of San Diego is overseeing the revitalization and eventual reopening of the trail."Access to the coast is the one public right that we can hold," says Pam Heatherington with the Environmental Center. "We want to get kids out into the natural world. If this is a small part of that, we're up for it."People who live along Princess Street are split on their feelings about the trail. Melinda Merryweather says she remembers using it in the 1960s and wants her grandkids to enjoy it as well. She's been fighting for it to reopen for 23 years."It was a terrible injustice," she says of the gate that blocked access. "It's just so heart-filling to now see this as a reality.""I've been on record that I don't like it," says Dave Reynolds. He and his family have lived in a house next to the trail for four generations. He thinks reopening it will bring a litany of problems to the neighborhood."Safety, possible illegal activity, increased traffic, trash," he says of the issues he foresees. "But it is what it is. We're not happy about it, but there's nothing we can do about it."Supporters say it won't draw crowds, as it goes to an area only popular with divers and local surfers. They say people who want a traditional beach experience will still go to La Jolla Shores nearby.They also say having the trail will allow for easier rescues when people get trapped by the rising tides along the cove.The Environmental Center is now using a ,000 grant to clear the brush on the trail to within 6 inches of the ground. That will allow for a topographical survey, then a design team will create a new path down to the coast.After that, they hope to have the new trail built and open by the end of 2020. 2350

(KGTV) - A Jamul mother is worried the remote learning designed to keep her daughter safe during the pandemic, is making her sick.When 11-year-old Amelia started the school year with distance learning in mid-August, her daily computer screen time went from one to two hours, to seven to eight hours. Her mother Renee says Amelia's school has since offered a hybird option. Now Amerila does remote learning three days a week. Around the beginning of October, Renee says her daughter started complaining about her eyes."She started to come to me with, 'My eyes are tired. I want to scratch my eyes,'" said Renee.Within the past week, those symptoms have gotten worse."She started saying she was lightheaded, uncomfortable in front of the screen. Started feeling constant headaches," said Renee.Renee shared details on a neighborhood Facebook page and learned her daughter wasn't alone."Found out a lot of community members are facing the same challenges with their children," said Renee.Locally and across the county, as school districts have turned to remote learning and all that uninterrupted screen time, complaints of visual fatigue have continued to grow."It's frustrating. I feel helpless. I also want her to be healthy and stay focused. I also don't her to fall behind. She loves school," said Renee.Amelia's pediatrician prescribed ibuprofen, which hasn't helped. A few days ago, Renee purchased blue-light blocking glasses for her daughter. Renee says the eye fatigue has gotten better but the headaches remain.Dr. David Granet, Professor of Ophthalmology & Pediatrics, UC San Diego School of Medicine, offered this advice when it comes to remote learning:"Health problems connected with spending many hours at a time or in a day looking at a computer monitor or TV screen is a global issue, especially where schools are currently shut down and students are spending class hours online. There are immediate and longer-term effects.First, there is the issue of eyestrain. Looking at something up close, like a monitor, requires effort. The muscles of the eyes have to work hard to focus. Younger people may have a greater ability to do that, but it still takes effort, which can lead to headaches, blurry vision when the muscles tire, or dry and itchy eyes because you’re not blinking enough.Then there is the issue of how you’re looking at the screen. Are you hunched over a laptop? Hanging your head out and forward puts a great strain on the neck and back. It creates posture issues.A simple part of the remedy involves the 20-20-20 rule: After 20 minutes of looking at a screen, look at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. That gives your eyes time to relax and recover. This is one of the times when we want kids to gaze outside the window! There are many ways to remember to do this, such as setting a timer or bookmarking ahead in an e-book.Kids need to get up and away from screens to help prevent longer-term issues. For example, there is a growing epidemic of myopia, near-sightedness caused by too many years spent staring at close objects, like computer screens. It’s happening around the world.Excessive screen time is also linked to rising rates of childhood obesity, impaired sleep quality, and behavioral changes. Kroger is making another big push into online groceries, this time by opening a digital business in China.America's largest grocery chain said Tuesday that it will start selling its Simple Truth-brand products on Alibaba's Tmall Global site.By partnering with Alibaba, Kroger can battle its biggest rivals on two fronts: It will expand its fledgling online business and will venture abroad for the first time. Kentucky Speaker of the House Jeff Hoover resigned from his position Sunday amid sexual harassment allegations, saying he had made "mistakes."Hoover, who The Courier-Journal newspaper in Louisville reported had secretly settled a sexual harassment allegation by a woman on his legislative staff, did not resign as a state representative, however, and has denied all allegations."I did make mistakes, in that I engaged in inappropriate text messages," the Republican lawmaker said at a press conference announcing his decision. "I engaged in banter that was consensual, yet make no mistake, it was wrong on my part to do that. And for that I am truly sorry."The Courier-Journal was the first to report Hoover's settlement last week, citing sources with direct knowledge of the matter. The settlement involved three other Republican state representatives and Hoover's chief of staff, the newspaper reported.Hoover and his accuser, whom the Courier-Journal has not identified because she says she was sexually harassed, declined to comment, as did a lawyer for the woman, the newspaper said.Hoover asked for the public's forgiveness in a tearful statement on Sunday, saying, "To say that the past few weeks and days have been trying and difficult for me and my family would be an understatement."Kentucky's House speaker pro tempore, Republican David Osborne, said in a statement that he will be assuming operational control of the chamber as acting speaker.Hoover's resignation comes a day after Kentucky Gov.
