The group of marine scientists, archeologists, and historians went to work using science and advanced technology to find missing aircraft with servicemen still onboard."It's really easy to look on a map and say, 'hey, x marks the spot.' And it turns out that x could be several square miles,'" said Eric Terrill, Co-Founder of Project Recover and a Scripps OceanographerIn October 2017, Terrill and his team set out on a three-week expedition.  "These robots allow us to do very detailed surveys of the seabed using scanning sonar," he said.After 11 days on the water covering roughly six thousand acres and talking to fishermen, they found the wreckage."It was a mixture of elation and sadness," he said. "It's very humbling knowing this is really a grave site of historical importance."Althaus' cousin was no longer just a name and a face in black and white."For the first time in 74 years, we've seen what his grave looks like and that is a priceless gift," Althaus said.Today, there are still more than 72,000 missing U.S. service members from WWII. "There are stories like this all around the country of an uncle or a father or a grandfather that never returned home," Terrill said. "It's remarkable to think that [families] carry this loss for that many decades and then to actually see it play out is just amazing."Lieutenant Kelly's family has already been in contact with the families of seven other crew members on the plane. They're hoping the military will recover the remains from the wreckage. 2379

A Florida business owner can continue to fly the flags of the branches of the military after an employee's Facebook live video prompted an ordinance review by city officials.On Monday afternoon, the store manager for Jaguar Power Sports — a motorcycle dealership in Jacksonville — went live on the dealership's Facebook page and claimed a city official with the Regulatory and Compliance Department had cited the business for flying flags of the various branches of the military. The employee claimed that the business was cited for each flag on top of the building."These flags that are flying overhead should not be a problem," said the employee, identifying himself only as Shaun. "... There’s one thing I’m not going to tolerate and that is disrespect for our military in a military town. We should not get cited or ticketed for flying flags representing our country.”The employee also claims the city official who cited the dealership also told a customer in the store at the time — a military veteran — that the customer had done "nothing for our country."Jaguar Power Sports' video has since been shared nearly 250,000 times and received more than 5 million views as of 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday.Regulatory and Compliance Department Chief of Staff Brian Hughes told the Jacksonville Times Union said that Jaguar Power Sports had been issued a warning and had not been fined. A Colorado man is changing the next chapter of history by helping his local library buy more books about Black history and cultural diversity.Kevin Gebert retired from the aerospace industry six years ago and started a nonprofit for minority children, but when COVID-19 shut down schools, he found himself with extra time. He used the spare time to read "The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration" by Isabel Wilkerson. It's a book filled with lessons on Black history."I read this book and by the time I got a quarter of the way through it, I thought about the impact this book could have on school kids, adults," Gebert said.His curiosity took him to the Louisville Public Library, where he discovered the book selection on race and cultural diversity was slim. Gebert said the library only had one copy of "The Warmth of Other Suns," and 16 people were on a wait list."It will probably be into next year before everyone has had a chance to read it," he said.He launched a fundraiser with the library to expand the collection of culturally diverse books, books about Black history, race and equality.With the help of friends, Gebert compiled a list of 20 books to add to the library collection."(Library staff) are going to go through the list of books that were recommended and they will make the decision as to how many they buy," he said. A former Google engineer is accusing the company of firing him after he spoke out about incidents of racism, sexism and harassment.Tim Chevalier is suing Google for retaliation, wrongful termination and failure to prevent discrimination and harassment, according to a lawsuit filed in San Francisco on Wednesday.Silicon Valley -- and Google in particular -- has been shaken by fierce debates over diversity issues. Highly charged arguments between Google employees have at times burst into public view as the company wrestles with how to address the concerns.The lawsuit by Chevalier, who identifies as transgender and disabled, claims Google's culture is discriminatory. He alleges that some employees use the company's internal social-networking and messaging systems to belittle and bully women, people of color and LGBTQ colleagues."Chevalier pushed back on the online bullying he and others were experiencing, using the same internal messaging systems to try to educate his employer and coworkers on how to change Google's working conditions to be inclusive and supportive of underrepresented minorities, such as himself," the lawsuit says.His lawsuit alleges that rather than trying to address the concerns he was raising about other employees' behavior, Google fired him in November, citing the political nature of his posts."It is a cruel irony that Google attempted to justify firing me by claiming that my social networking posts showed bias against my harassers," Chevalier said in a statement provided by his lawyers. "The anti-discrimination laws are meant to protect marginalized and underrepresented groups -- not those who attack them."Google spokeswoman Gina Scigliano declined to comment directly on Chevalier's allegations. She said that lively debate is important to Google's culture, but that there are limits."All employees acknowledge our code of conduct and other workplace policies, under which promoting harmful stereotypes based on race or gender is prohibited," Scigliano said in a statement. "This is a very standard expectation that most employers have of their employees. The overwhelming majority of our employees communicate in a way that is consistent with our policies. But when an employee does not, it is something we must take seriously. We always make our decision without any regard to the employee's political views."In the lawsuit, which was first reported by tech news site Gizmodo, Chevalier alleges that some Googlers would call coworkers "immoral" because of their sexual orientation. Employees also questioned the competency of women and minorities on internal message boards, he said."Company social networking forums can be incredibly useful, but employers have an obligation to prevent them from becoming a cesspool of bullying and harassment," David Lowe, an attorney for Chevalier, said in a statement. "Firing the employee who pushed back against the bullies was exactly the wrong step to take."Debates inside Google about diversity issues erupted in August when one of the company's senior engineers at the time, James Damore, published a controversial memo claiming women are underrepresented in technology because of psychological and biological differences, not sexism.In his memo, Damore claimed to "value diversity and inclusion," but he took issue with Google's approach, which he described as overly political and alienating to "non-progressives."Damore, who was fired over the controversy, and another former Google engineer, David Gudeman, are suing the company, alleging that it discriminates against white men and conservatives.Chevalier waded into the internal debates over Damore's memo last summer, according to his lawsuit. It says that in September, a Google human resources representative spoke with Chevalier about some of his emails and posts on internal forums regarding the memo and other politically charged subjects.Google is also facing a gender-pay lawsuit claiming the company paid women less than their male counterparts.  4016
