SAN DIEGO - (KGTV) A San Diego biotech company is doing research that could lead to a vaccine against the coronavirus.Todd Nelson is the CEO of SGI-DNA in Sorrento Valley. His company invented the first automated gene printer. "We use that system actually to print genes. Genes are made of little building blocks that you've heard of, and we use that to rapidly, and in an automated fashion, print genes that researchers can use around the world for vaccine development. "We're basically taking an entire laboratory of researchers that are doing various things, and we put it in a box," said Nelson.Researchers are using the printer to write the genes of the coronavirus."Even a nasty little thing like the coronavirus has its own genes, and there are certain genes that make that amenable to being a vaccine, and we know what those are so we put the information into the system, and we push a button and about 8 hours later that potential gene comes out ," said Nelson. "We're partnering with pharmaceutical firms to develop that in a very, very rapid fashion in the next 7 to 10 days to develop a vaccine," said Nelson. The company used the same technology to help develop a vaccine for the Bird Flu in 2013. Dan Gibson is the company's chief technology officer and the inventor of the technology used in the gene printer.RELATED: First case of coronavirus confirmed in San Diego"That's really the power of synthetic DNA technology. You can keep up with the virus and write and build many vaccines to fight it and ultimately find a universal solution that puts an end to the coronavirus outbreak." 1900

SAN DIEGO — With in-restaurant dining now outlawed amid the Coronavirus outbreak, a South Park neighborhood bistro has transformed itself into a local grocer where shoppers can get produce, milk, eggs, and - yes - toilet paper.Ownership at Eclipse Chocolate made the move this week to help the business get through a time when they can't carry out the core of their business - in house dining. "We were already selling our own chocolate, we're also selling local food brands, we do that all the time, so really it was just a matter of rearranging our own furniture," said Daniel Youngren, a co-owner of the eatery. Restaurants across San Diego County have been hit hard due to the restrictions, with many either shutting down or offering discounts for takeout. More than 126,000 San Diegans work in the industry, which has seen employees either lose their jobs or have their hours cut.Youngren says Eclipse Chocolate is no exception, with a number of its 20 employees seeing fewer hours and applying for unemployment assistance. Still, he says this allows the restaurant to make up at least a portion of the revenue lost and keep some workers busy, while also fulfilling its mission of getting food to people who are hungry. On Thursday, Eclipse Chocolate had used the tables from its dining room to offer apples, tomatoes, onions, cauliflower, to name a few. It also was getting a delivery of milk, eggs, butter, and toilet paper. "We do it all," Youngren said. "Our rent is very expensive, we designed this business, this child of ours to work in a pretty specific way. It is meant to be really adaptable." 1615

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Little Kurt looks like any other baby horse as he frolics playfully in his pen. But the 2-month-old, dun-colored colt is actually a clone. He was created by fusing cells taken from an endangered Przewalski’s horse at the San Diego Zoo in 1980. The cells were infused with an egg from a domestic horse that gave birth to Kurt two months ago. The baby boy was named for Kurt Benirschke, a founder of the San Diego Zoo's Frozen Zoo, where thousands of cell cultures are stored. Scientists hope Kurt will help restore the Przewalski’s population, which numbers only about 2,000. 599
