SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hoover High School Friday celebrated the topping off of one of its newest additions to campus.The campus set the final beam of its new 500-seat theater into place, with students and staff signing the steel beam before a crane lifted it into place. The event marked the latest completion in the school's massive renovation project, which has already seen the return of the school's once iconic tower. The tower, which was topped off in January 2019, could once be seen from El Cajon Blvd., before it was taken down in 1976 due to seismic safety standards.Once the renovations are completed, Hoover High will have not only its Spanish-style tower back but also a new theater with theater support and instructional space, and a three-story building accommodating counselors, support staff, and students.The new classroom building will feature 20 classrooms to replace outdated modular classrooms elsewhere on campus.The project will also see a reconfiguration of the main parking lot, courtyard improvements, and a student drop-off area. 1062

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Documents show the man accused of pummeling a teenage Syrian refugee on a trolley car has a history of run-ins with authorities.On Oct. 15, Adrian Vergara was accused of the crime after approaching the teen and asking him if he's Mexican."He responded, no I am Arab. He does not speak a lot of English, and with that response the person began to pummel him in the face," Geneviéve Jones-Wright, Legal Director, Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans, said.Tuesday, San Diego Police said they had arrested Vergara on suspicion of assault with force and violation of civil rights.RELATED: Man accused of attacking Syrian refugee aboard trolley car arrested10News dug into Vergara's background and found a history of violent incidents. In 2012, court documents say Vergara threatened a man with a billy club. He did community service in the South Metro Career Center. A letter says he worked well there with special needs students as well as general students. And in 2016, he was charged with grand theft and burglary for breaking into the Central Library.Later that year, documents say Vergara violated a restraining order against his ex-girlfriend, kicking her front door, texting her and in a phone call, cursing at her and saying, "if you don't talk to me I'm going to go to your job and cause a scene. I don't care about my life." Documents show he called her 20 times in 30 minutes.Court documents also show a carjacking charge at the beginning of 2017.In October 2017, Vergara was charged for beating up a man and given a stay away order from the MTS Imperial Transit Center.The most recent document shows he violated a court order, put in place to prevent domestic violence in January 2019. 1996

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For six years a Camp Pendleton Recon Marine allowed filmmakers full access into his life, which at one point hit rock bottom. The GI Film Festival documentary, Homemade, aims to start a conversation on taking better care of our returning veterans. Staff Sgt. Adam Sorensen was injured in 2010 by an explosive device in Afghanistan; 100 pieces of shrapnel pierced his body, and he required two surgeries.He could no longer serve in a combat role and spent the next couple of years as an instructor. The documentary follows Sorensen as he navigates civilian life and the effects of Post Traumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injury, and addiction on his marriage, family, and work.Filmmakers Danielle Bernstein and Jason Maris included scenes that can be hard to watch. "For me, it ultimately is to help people, because that's the whole reason I really wanted to make something that looked at how is this affecting people, families," said Maris.
