SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors renewed their concerns over jets rattling their neighborhood less than a week before the F-35 arrives at Marine Corps. Air Station Miramar.The same concerns from University City neighbors voiced in letters to Miramar date back to at least 2012, according to MCAS Miramar Director of Communications Capt. He pointed to a gray square and said that entire area over the base up to 10,000 feet is controlled by the Federal Aviation Administration.Right off the end of the flight deck sits University City, where tragedy struck more than a decade ago. An F/A-18 crashed after having engine trouble, killing four and destroying two homes.With the F-35 coming to MCAS Miramar next week, neighbors are concerned the single-engine jet poses a higher risk.Capt. Gregory says the aircraft is arguably safer, "it is much easier to diagnose any issues and fix those issues."Neighbors are also concerned where the F-35 will fly, "the goal is to have flights as much as possible follow the approved flight paths," San Diego Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry said.She was referencing a map with different colored flight paths. The Marine Corps. stated that map is from 2005, and shows average flight paths based on 5,000 annual operations. They said the map is disproportional and it is solely meant to illustrate the average flight paths for land developers.That came as news to Bry, "I don't think the community understands that. They understand that these are the flight paths they will take."When it comes to noise, "the Navy and Marine Corps have been flying F-18s here in San Diego for the past 30-35 years, so it's going to be very noticeable when the F-35s get here and start taking off," Capt. Gregory said.He added the Navy flew more jets when they ran the base.Overall, the F-35s are expected to make the area slightly quieter.Neighbors are having a meeting later this month, where a representative from Bry's office as well as MCAS Miramar will be present. 2130

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police have identified the man who died in custody after being arrested in Little Italy earlier this month.Vito Vitale, also known as Todd James Vitale, 39, died at the hospital after being taken into custody.Witnesses say Vitale was running in and out of traffic naked near the 600 block of West Grape Street around 11 p.m. Friday yelling for help.People who witnessed the events also told police that the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.RELATED: Police investigate death of man arrested in Little ItalyAfter placing Vitale into handcuffs, several witnesses had to help officers restrain him. Police provided medical aid to Vitale until paramedics arrived.Police also identified the officers involved in the incident as Greg Pilkington, a 10-year veteran of the department, Robert Nelson, a three-year veteran and Carlos Diaz, a one-year veteran. 915

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Monday afternoon, two brothers were sentenced in connection to the deadly freeway shooting of a Navy sailor who stopped to be a good Samaritan.Edson Acuna and Brandon Acuna learned their sentences following the 2018 shooting death of Navy sailor Curtis Adams. Edson Acuna was given a term of life without the possibility of parole plus 25 years to life plus 27 years and four months. He was ordered to pay ,000 in restitution and pay for associated fines. “He's going to be in prison for the rest of his life until he takes his last breath and I think that will give him time to pay these from prison wages,” the judge told the courtroom.Edson Acuna was convicted by jury of first degree murder while Brandon Acuna pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. On Monday, Brandon Acuna was sentenced to 13 years in prison.Prosecutors argued that they burglarized a car outside of a Mount Hope home which led to a shootout with the homeowner. They tried to get away but a blown-out tire caused them to stall on the freeway. Adams stopped to help but Edson Acuna shot him after thinking that he was the homeowner from the shootout earlier in the night.Harvey Liberato and Susana Galvan were also in the brothers’ car and have entered plea agreements.The judge concluded the hearing by telling the courtroom that he hopes both men reflect in the years to come on the magnitude of the loss that their actions caused. 1441

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 50 free health classes could come to community centers and libraries across San Diego. It would be part of a sponsorship deal the city is considering with Sharp HealthCare, in which Sharp would pay the city 0,000 a year for the right to market as the city's "Health and Wellness Partner."Sharp currently offers classes, many of them free, but most are at Sharp facilities.This arrangement, going before a city committee Wednesday, and ultimately before the City Council, would call for six free classes a year in each of the nine council districts, from Otay Mesa to Rancho Bernardo. Dr. Eunice Sanchez-Mata, of Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, said patients usually see her once or twice a year."We're here educating them as best as we can, but really that education should be year long," she said. The classes would impart key information on ways to prevent heart disease, quit smoking, live with diabetes, and manage stress. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after they say four teenagers were beaten, stabbed and robbed near a City Heights elementary school Saturday night.Police say the four teens were in a skate park near Cherokee Point Elementary School on the 3900 block of Landis Street when they were approached by a group of men.According to police, the man tried to start an argument, so then teens ran to a pedestrian bridge where another group of men was waiting for them.Police say the approximately 15 men punched and kicked all four victims and stole their cell phones and wallets.One of the victims was stabbed in the elbow and another was cut on the finger.One of the victims was taken to the hospital for his injuries, police say. The condition of the victims wasn’t specified.   806
