LAS VEGAS, Nevada — A poem about the Oct. 1, 2017 mass shooting penned by a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department captain was unveiled at police headquarters on Thursday. LVMPD Captain Harry Fagel is a lifelong poet. His poem "The Route" about the 1 October shooting was unveiled at police headquarters, marking the end of a series of 1 October remembrance events. After Fagel wrote the poem, art collector and Nevada School of the Arts president and CEO Patrick Duffy commissioned to have it transcribed onto a scroll by a calligrapher."In our community, there is a much-needed component of healing," said Duffy. "That's what this scroll and poem are essential and we hope is that it will help bring solace to others."The executive director of the LVMPD Foundation said he felt Fagel's words were a reminder of a kind of collective healing that's taken place in the year since the shooting."It was simply mind-blowing that someone could take such an awful tragedy and turn it into such a powerful reminder of the good that exists and the good that responded to that awful event," said Tom Kovach. "The Route" is on display in the lobby of LVMPD headquarters, which is open to the public. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas State Police say a man suspected of stealing a taxi was fatally shot by a trooper after the man stabbed and wounded another law enforcement officer over the weekend.State police say 58-year-old Aloysius Keaton of Little Rock crashed the stolen cab while exiting off Interstate 30 and stabbed an Arkansas Highway Patrol officer who tried to arrest him.Police say the trooper shot Keaton after a shock from a stun gun failed to stop him as he approached the trooper with the weapon.The trooper ordered Keaton to stop and drop the weapon, but police say he failed to comply with the order and charged toward the officer, who then shot the suspect with a handgun.Keaton later died from his injuries at an area hospital Saturday night.State police say the Highway Police officer was treated and released and the trooper was uninjured.Keaton’s body has been transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory where an autopsy will be conducted.The trooper remains on paid administrative leave and has not yet been identified. 1056

LA MESA (KGTV) -- East County residents are worried about thousands of parolees flocking to their community. The state wants to add a parole office in the city of La Mesa but residents are not happy about the proposed location, saying it's too close to their schools and homes. “I’m very uncomfortable with the prospect of violent and sexual offenders routinely coming into my neighborhood,” says Susan Nichols with the Grossmont- Mt. Helix Improvement Association. The new building sits at the end of Grossmont Summit Drive, directly behind homes on Mt. Helix. The location is in close proximity to local schools, less than a mile from Grossmont High School and Mt. Helix Academy. “The bus stop that would service this facility is directly in front of Grossmont High School, the same stop that the students will be using,” says Nichols.Supervisor Dianne Jacob sent her community a letter the Department of Corrections addressed to the La Mesa City Clerk. Parent Wendy Tinsley Becker says she’s extremely concerned about the children in this area. Her family made copies of the letter and hand-delivered them to neighbors living close to the site. Supervisor Jacob sent 10News a statement that says in part: “I’m deeply troubled by the state proposal and I share the residents’ concerns about the impact on public safety. Allowing convicted criminals to frequent an area that close to thousands of Grossmont High School students and quiet neighborhoods is a terrible idea.”The La Mesa City Clerk says they are doing what they can to prevent the parole office from coming to the city. 10News reached out to the State Department of Corrections about the location. They responded in part:“The men and women who will be served at this office lived there before they were incarcerated and have returned to the community. (KGTV) -- A car being pursued by sheriff’s deputies crashed into the backyard swimming pool at a Lemon Grove home early Wednesday morning.San Diego County sheriff’s deputies were called to Mt. Vernon Street in response to a report of vehicles racing each other on the street.When deputies arrived, the cars fled, prompting deputies to pursue them.The pursuit was called off after deputies lost track of the vehicles. However, minutes later, a homeowner contacted authorities to report a car had landed in her swimming pool.The home is located directly below Mt.
