LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - After serving the beach communities of Pacific Beach and La Jolla for more than 60 years, Pernicano’s Family Restaurant will be closing.Johnny Pernicano Sr., the restaurant's enigmatic founder, still comes every night, singing to patrons with his piano and accordion.“I learned how to play all the instruments just by being here every night,” said Pernicano. He and his nine brothers began opening restaurants across San Diego after World War II. As the youngest son, he started off making pizzas in his older brother’s restaurant. But by the mid ’50s, he went off on his own to build the restaurant that’s now on Turquoise Street on the southern edge of La Jolla.Since then, it’s served as the reliable home for birthdays, reunions, fundraisers and family dinners across San Diego. It’s one of three surviving Pericano’s in the county. Two of his nephews, now in their 70's, operate locations in El Cajon and Poway. They will remain open for the foreseeable future. The location on Turquoise Street will have its last day on Sept. 15.Johnny says he has leased the space out to a new family who plans on opening a new restaurant at the location. 1186

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One of the men indicted for the death of 10-year-old boy on a water slide in 2016 is also facing a bankruptcy in Texas.Jeff Henry, the co-owner of Schlitterbahn water parks in Kansas City, Kansas and Corpus Christi, Texas is scheduled to appear in a Kansas City, Kansas, courtroom next week. The Corpus Christi location is part of an ongoing bankruptcy.According to court records, Jeff Henry and his brother Gary Henry were behind a company called Upper Padre Partners (UPP).Those same records show UPP had more than million in unexplained cost overruns for the Corpus Christi water park. That figure is more than double what it was expected to cost to build the complex, which also includes a nine-hole golf course.Companies the Henrys borrowed money from accuse them of mismanagement and misappropriation of funds.Right now, a court-appointed trustee runs Upper Padre Partners, and submits monthly financial reports to the court. The newest report, for February, was submitted last week.Court records show a company called Axys loaned UPP million in February 2015.By November 2016, three months after 10-year-old Caleb Schwab was killed while riding a slide in the Kansas City park, that million was in default.Axys foreclosed on a piece of property next to the Corpus Christi water park and is attempting to sell it to get some of its money back.An attorney for Axys said UPP still owes the company millions of dollars.Court records show UPP also owes International Bank of Commerce more than million. That bank has put claims known as liens on both the water park and the golf course. 1662

JACKSONVILLE, Florida — A Florida gas station owner is “sick and tired” of people using the microwave to warm containers of urine. Parul Patel has placed a sign in his store asking customers to stop committing this act. He owns a BP gas station and On the Fly convenience store in Jacksonville, which are within walking distance of two labs. One lab said it does not collect drug test samples. He said that people walk in off the street, microwave their containers and then leave. Warming urine from a person who has not taken drugs is seen by some as a way to pass a drug test. A few months ago a woman became aggressive with Patel when he asked her to not warm urine. He said she asked to see a sign that forbids this, so he made one.  785

KINGS MILLS, Ohio - Patrick Farrell has a very full heart, but he was running on empty Sunday afternoon. The Kings Mills man was straining to finish a 100-mile run to raise money for orphans on the other side of the globe.Farrell took only short breaks for fuel and to change shoes. His first pair had sheet metal screws on the bottom."Because there was snow on the ground (Saturday),” he explained after his grueling 30-hour endeavor. You could say Farrell had his heart in it all the way.  “I decided to blend my passion for running and helping orphans,” he said.Farrell said he did it for six girls at an orphanage in Nepal who are not available for U.S. adoption.“There's a non-profit organization called Love Does and they're always looking for people to do fundraisers to provide financial support for the orphanage,” Farrell said. It’s a cause that close to Farrell's heart because he and his wife Susan adopted their four youngest kids from China. The Farrells said they got the idea after their only biological child, Karrie, noticed families who had adopted Chinese children. Karrie did her own research and started asking her parents to adopt, too.The Farrells’ kids know the importance of helping orphans, so they encouraged their dad on his run through their neighborhood.“I'm just so glad I'm not doing it,” said Caitlin, the Farrells’ first adopted child.Farrell said he went through three pairs of shoes running on trails and concrete. Other took turns running with him.Susan kept her husband fed and hydrated as best she could, but she could see him slipping as the miles and hours took their toll.“He really did great for probably the first 70 miles, but then as evening set in and the cold and the weariness, he hit a wall bigger than I've ever seen before,” Susan said.“I experienced sleep deprivation at a number of points,” Patrick said.  “There's times when you just want to go inside and put your head down on a pillow and go to sleep.”But the people running with him and encouraging pulled him through, Susan said.“I really feel like the friends that came and helped him all through the night were a big key. I don't know if he could've done it without them,” she said. This was the second time Farrell has run 100 miles to raise money for the orphanage. He raised over ,400 the last time, and his goal this time was ,000.Every U.S. dollar goes very far there because of the exchange rate:   is worth 102 rupees in Nepal. As of Sunday, Farrell was about halfway toward his goal. KENOSHA, Wisc. — Lucas Jundt is a junior quarterback at Kenosha Indian Trail High School, in Wisconsin who just happens to have prosthetic legs."Since my Dad showed me football, I'm like, I'm going to play that sport!" Jundt said."Yeah, everybody on the team is like 'why is he getting all the fame.' And I'm like, 'sorry for having no feet. I guess they just like that type of stuff!' And it inspires kids to, you know what? Hey, I can get off of my lazy butt and go out there and do something that I love," Jundt said.To his teammates, Jundt is just one of the guys. "They're like 'no mercy for you. We're just gonna go at you.' And I'm like, 'that's fine. I love it,'" Jundt said.Jundt's story of how he got to Kenosha Indian Trail's football field is the stuff of movies. "My parents abandoned me at five days old. I was born with a condition called fibula hemimelia. I don't know if I'm pronouncing that right, sorry doctors! But I was born with that. That's basically missing a fibula," Jundt explained.Born in Inner Mongolia, he was adopted by a Kenosha couple at age seven."They lost three kids. Two to an hour of life. And one for six years. Cancer, and yeah, it was just rough, they went through a lot of hardship and pain. But God said 'you know what? This is not the end of your story. Your story is still continuing. And I am going to let you adopt a son, and two more kids,'" Jundt said of his adoptive parents.Jundt says his faith keeps him going, and remembers a time talking to another media outlet about it. "I remember one news station didn't put it in, and I'm like 'please, put my faith in there.' Because my faith, is what got me here. Because of God. I am here," Jundt says. "He opened the door for me, to play football."This story originally reported by Lance Allan on TMJ4.com. 1811
