For the first time in more than two decades, Virginia elected and just swore in a new state legislature controlled by Democrats. “Virginia is officially blue, congratulations,” said Gov. Georgetown Law professor Mary McCord says what each declaration says varies from place to place. “Some are very much directly stating that county officials or city officials will not enforce state law that implicates or regulates, in any way, shape or form, gun ownership,” McCord said. “Others are simply espousing a support for second amendment rights.” In the end, though, she said the declarations do not hold up to legal scrutiny. “They really have no legal effect,” McCord said. “In Virginia, for example -- the Virginia Constitution and Virginia state law is very clear that it is the general assembly of the entire state -- not of any particular locality. The General Assembly makes the general laws and that those laws are supreme -- and any local ordinances resolutions, etc., that are inconsistent with those laws are void and have no effect.”Virginia’s attorney general has concluded the same thing and added that any gun control measures passed by the state legislature will be enforced. 1916

A federal official says the White House overruled health officials who wanted to recommend that elderly and physically fragile Americans be advised not to fly on commercial airlines because of the new coronavirus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention submitted the plan this week as a way of trying to control the virus, but White House officials ordered the air travel recommendation be removed. That’s according to a federal official with direct knowledge of the plan who did not have authorization to talk about the matter and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.Meanwhile, Officials in Washington, D.C., say a man in his 50s has tested positive for coronavirus, marking the first presumptively confirmed case in the nation’s capital. District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser said Saturday that the man started exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 in late February and was hospitalized Thursday. She said another man, from Nigeria, who had passed through Washington has also tested positive for the virus in Maryland. Trump says he isn't concerned “at all” about the coronavirus getting closer to the White House after the first Washington case and an attendee of a recent political conference where Trump himself had spoken also tested positive for the virus.Missouri and Kansas also reported their first case as the virus spreads into the nation's heartland. A bill that would ban the most common abortion method used in the second trimester of pregnancy was signed into law Friday by Ohio Gov. Though there is no exception in the law in cases of rape or incest, there is one if the mother's life is at risk.Any abortion provider who defies this law could face fourth-degree felony charges, including prison time and fines.The Republican governor's decision to sign off on this legislation sparked immediate backlash from abortion rights advocates.Kasich, who has signed more than 20 laws restricting abortion access in his eight years in office, has "again let the people of Ohio down by using extreme legislation to turn medical decision-making into political ideology," said Iris Harvey, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio, in a written statement."Patients, and the medical providers who serve them, rely on the overwhelming medical evidence that shows abortion is one of the safest medical procedures," she continued.
