SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local Marine Corps veteran will be part of the National Memorial Day Concert in Washington, D.C. He'll be honored for his service, and the work he does with other veterans who have PTSD.Bill Rider is the founder of American Combat Veterans of War, a non-profit that he started in 2013."We let them know we're going to be there for them, we mentor them," Rider said about his group. "Just about anything and everything they could possibly need, ACVOW does."ACVOW runs programs that help veterans cope with PTSD. Their "Veterans Moving Forward" program visits vets at the Vista Detention Center. Its goal is to reduce recidivism rates to below 10% for veterans.Another program called Safe Warrior Outreach pairs younger veterans with older veterans to talk through their struggles and share stories."We're trying to chip away at the stigma of PTSD," said Rider. "Human beings were not meant to watch their friends be killed in such a visceral way. And, they're not meant to kill other human beings."It's an issue he has first-hand experience with. Rider joined the Marine Corps when he was 19 years old and was part of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment. That regiment became famous for its part in the battle of Khe Sahn, where it had the highest casualty rate in Marine Corps history."It was, on a daily basis, a visceral passing of Marines and warriors," said Rider. "In one battle, we lost 45 or 50 people, and another 150 were wounded."Rider left the Marines in 1969. When he returned home, it wasn't long before the lingering effects of PTSD started to show."The way I knew something was quite different was when I was transferred back to my little hometown in Ohio. A car backfired, and I instinctively laid out on the sidewalk, expecting more shots," he said.Now he's dedicated his life to helping other vets who deal with PTSD. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A march involving attorneys and staff from the Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. is set to take place in downtown San Diego Monday afternoon.The Black Lives Matter To Public Defenders march will begin outside of the Federal Defenders of San Diego Inc. office on Broadway at 12:15 p.m. Participants will walk to the courtyard of the federal courthouse, across the street from the San Diego Hall of Justice on 330 Broadway.Once at the courtyard, longtime San Diego County public defender Geneviéve Jones-Wright will deliver remarks and “address the role public defenders play in our criminal justice system and the statewide call from California public defenders to end police violence,” according to a news release.The San Diego march is one of several involving public defenders and attorneys happening Monday across California.Other counties having their own Black Lives Matter To Public Defenders marches include Los Angeles County, Orange County, Santa Clara County, Contra Costa County, San Francisco County, and Alameda County. 1063

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A North San Diego County teenager was taken into custody Thursday after reportedly making threats to Torrey Pines High School.School administrators reached out to San Diego Police Thursday morning after a 14-year-old freshman was suspended for making verbal and written threats.While investigating, police found that the teen committed the crime of making criminal threats.Officers went to the 14-year-old boy's home around noon on Larkfield Court near El Camino Real and Del Mar Road in Carmel Valley. The boy was taken to the San Diego Juvenile Hall Detention Facility.RELATED: Parents warned of threats to 3 San Diego County schoolsThe teen's father cooperated with officers and the family's home is not being searched at this time, according to investigators.Later Thursday night, police went back to the home where they served a search warrant. Officers spent less than an hour searching the home. It's unclear what exactly, if anything, police found in the 14-year-old's possession. Following the incident, Superintendent Eric Dill released the following statement:"We are working cooperatively with the San Diego Police Department as they investigate a possible threat involving a student. The police contacted the student off-campus. At no time were our students or school in danger. We would like to thank the concerned students who brought this matter to our attention. According to WalletHub, San Diego takes the 47th spot on the list among 257 other cities throughout California. America’s Finest City ranked 51st for quality of life, 139th for health care and 4th in the activities ranking. San Diego did take the top spot in California in several categories. According to WalletHub, San Diego has the most museums and fishing facilities per capita when compared with other California cities. San Diego did, however, rank quite a bit lower when it comes to adjusted cost of living and percentage of population aged 65 and older, placing 149th and 145th respectively. According to the WalletHub ranking, the best cities in California for retirement are Los Gatos, Los Altos and Walnut Creek. The lowest-ranking cities are Modesto, San Bernardino and Stockton. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A neighbor says San Diego Police were called to the home of Trevor Heitmann the morning of the deadly freeway crash.According to the CHP, the 18-year-old was in his McLaren sports car when he drove south in the northbound lanes of the 805 freeway near Sorrento Valley Thursday just before 5 p.m. He collided head on with an SUV. Both cars burst into flames.Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter Aryana were killed instantly.Heitmann also died. A neighbor, who doesn't want to be identified, says she's known the family roughly 15 years, "he was a normal kid, we went to elementary school with him and everything was totally normal."RELATED: 'The Rock' sends message to grieving SD family"He went off to La Jolla Country Day from then on I mainly saw him playing basketball with a couple of guys in the street, " she said.She said once Heitmann, who was known on Twitter as "McSkillet," started getting into on line video games, he stopped playing basketball outside.The neighbor said she saw police at the family's Carmel Valley home Thursday morning just hours before the fatal crash."There were probably three police cars, I would guess five officers and they were talking to his mother out in the driveway," she said.RELATED: Statement from driver's family in fatal crashShe also noticed an SUV blocking the family's driveway. Heitmann's McLaren sportscar was in the garage and the door was open."Now it makes sense. Shortly after, she said she saw a CHP officer talking to Heitmann's dad.She says that's when she learned from the boy's father that the family had been worried about the 18-year-old's behavior."He told me five days earlier, that Trevor had just snapped, that was the word he used. He started making threats, or started saying he was driving at high speed, down the wrong side of the street and through red lights and he said that's what prompted him to come to San Diego," said the neighbor, who added that the boy's parents were divorced and his dad lived in Colorado.RELATED: Mother and daughter remembered after I-805 crashShe said the teenager's dad also shared with her that his son hit the SUV that was blocking the driveway and nearly hit him."He said he almost hit me. This was him going back to the context of saying he had just snapped. And I said, 'you mean hit you as a person,' and he said, 'yeah I was standing out here because we were supposed to go to a psychiatrist,'" she said.San Diego Police have not confirmed to 10News that officers were called to the family's home that morning. These people were obviously very concerned to the degree that they called the police, especially in the face, they are very private people," she said.Clinical Psychologist Michelle Marie Carcel said forcing a kid who is over 18 to get psychiatric help can be complicated. She said parents need to be clear when calling 911 that they think their child is a danger to themselves or others."The most important thing is to really stress that in the call. I am concerned that my child is going to hurt themselves or hurt someone else, that kind of urgency really triggers that response from the officers," said Carcel.We don't know the circumstances of the call that day or if officers had contact with the 18-year-old. 4059
