SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SeaWorld is seeing an unusually large number of sea lion rescues along the local coastline this winter."Most of those rescued are coming in emaciated and dehydrated," said Jennifer Zarate, SeaWorld Senior Animal Care Specialist.Zarate says since early December, SeaWorld has rescued 25 sea lions along the coastline."Definitely a little concerning," said Zarate.That is about three times the amount they normally see. Usually, rescue season begins in March, so these rescues are coming early. Those needing rescuing this winter are younger than normal, less than two years old. The cause is a mystery, but Zarate says those early winter storms could be playing a role. The big swells may be tiring the pups out, causing them to burn too many calories. The weather may also be impacting their food sources.."The winter storms may be pushing schools of fish out further than seal lion pups can get to. That's probably the reason why they might not find as much fish as they normally would," said Zarate. After being rescued by SeaWorld, the pups now doing well. So far, medical tests haven't turned up anything else unusual. The pups are gaining back weight as expected. Next week, the first three of those recently rescued will be released.SeaWorld says the coastline in Orange County has also seen an increase in sea lion rescues. Prostate cancer can be silent, with no symptoms at all, and that was the case for Rancho Bernardo resident Patrick Sheffler. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Squatters turned a remodeled home in the College Area into a drug den, days after it was listed on as a vacation rental.Two weeks ago, John, who asked us not to use his full name, listed his four-bedroom home on the site VRBO, complete with new mattresses, comforters, and sheets. But once inside, it's clear they made themselves comfortable, using John's tools and toiletries, and eating food meant for future guests. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several San Diego families got their loved ones home in time for the holidays.The Crew of the Future USS Tulsa arrived in San Diego Wednesday.  The ship is a brand new littoral combat ship that completed its maiden voyage from the Austal Shipyard in Mobile Alabama.The crew, from San Diego, had been gone for eight months. Before arriving in San Diego, the ship made several port calls and completed a successful transit through the Panama Canal.The ship’s commissioning ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 16, 2019, in San Francisco.  That is when the vessel will officially join the fleet. 628

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some business owners in downtown San Diego claim a new bike lane on 6th Avenue is hurting their ability to operate.“We’re having a lot of issues with loading,” said Bon Pinak, the general manager of Thosakan, a Thai restaurant on 6th Ave.The new protected bike lane was placed along the curb. All the parking on the east side of the street was removed, as well as most of the loading zone.Only two spots were left for vehicles. Posted signs say they can be used for 20 minutes for commercial loading until 6 p.m. After 6 p.m., it turns into three-minute passenger loading.“I got a ticket three days ago,” said Remzi Kaval, owner of the Coffee and Talk cafe on 6th.He said he was unloading some supplies in one of the spaces, but it was after 6 p.m.“We don’t have any space where we can park.”The new protected bike lanes have been installed in various places across the City recently. Both as an attempt to make biking safer but also to meet the City’s climate action goals.“It’s great. I don’t have to worry about getting hit,” said Jordan Green, who bikes through the area regularly.“Protected bikeways provide a safe, designated space for cyclists, keeping sidewalks clear for pedestrians,” wrote a spokesperson for the City of San Diego.As for the particular block between B Street and C Street, the City did not indicate any interest in changing the layout.“A small number of curbside loading zone spaces were removed from this block on the east side of 6th Avenue, but there are yellow loading zones available farther up and down 6th Avenue and on adjacent streets.
