BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The State Council's policies to rein in rapidly soaring housing prices in cities will continue and local governments should implement them "unswervingly", according to a statement released Monday from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, while also denying some media reports on a possible policy withdrawal."We will urge local governments to make sure that they strictly implement the differentiated housing loans policy to crack down on housing speculations," the ministry said in a brief statement posted on its website.The ministry added it would adopt "positive" measures to increase the supply of commercial homes in the market, speed up construction of housing for low-income residents and renovation of shantytowns, and strengthen supervision of the real estate market conditions.The statement came shortly after the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released its latest figures on housing prices in Chinese cities.Housing prices in major Chinese cities rose 11.4 percent year on year in June, one percentage point lower than the increase in May, according to NBS statistics.This was the second consecutive month that China's property prices grew at a slower pace. Property prices in the 70 large- and medium-sized cities grew 12.4 percent year on year in May, 0.4 percentage point lower than in April.The State Council, China's Cabinet, introduced a series of tightening measures in April to rein in soaring house prices and curb speculation, including tightened scrutiny of developers' financing, suspension of loans for third-home purchases and higher down-payment requirements for second-home purchases.Housing prices almost doubled in some popular Chinese cities such as Beijing and Shanghai in 2009, prompting the Chinese government to take measures to curb these excessive hikes.

PARIS, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Police in China and France have dismantled a network that tried to smuggle Chinese migrants into Italy and Spain on boats, officials said Thursday.The French Immigration Ministry said several members of the network headed by a Chinese national living in Paris and a number of illegal immigrants were arrested July 27 during simultaneous operations in France and China. BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Profits at Chinese industrial enterprises in 24 regions climbed 71.8 percent year on year to 1.61 trillion yuan (237.5 billion U.S. dollars) in the first six months, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Wednesday.The growth rate was 11.2 percentage points lower than that in the first five months, the NBS said in a statement.Combined revenues for the enterprises totaled 25.9 trillion yuan in the first half of the year, up 36.5 percent from a year earlier - a growth rate 2.4 percentage points lower than in the January-to-May period.Most of the 39 major industries posted year-on-year profit growth.The 24 regions comprise all of the Chinese mainland provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions except the Inner Mongolia and Tibet autonomous regions; Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan and Yunnan provinces; and Chongqing.China's industrial value-added output expanded 17.6 percent year on year in the first half of the year. But month-on-month growth began to slow in March, with June's growth at 13.7 percent year on year.

BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rainfalls have ended in South China's flood-battered Provinces and water levels of major rivers in Jiangxi and Hunan provinces are receding, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) Sunday.However, flood prevention work must not slow down since risks remain, said the SFDH.Also, water levels in Jiangxi Province's Ganjiang River and Poyang Lake remain higher than normal warning levels and water in Hunan Province's Dongting Lake is still rising.Persistent heavy rains that have devastated parts of south China had, by Saturday, left 379 dead, and 141 missing, and resulted in economic losses estimated at 82.4 billion yuan, the SFDH said.The torrential rains and ensuing floods have affected 68.7 million people in 22 provincial-level regions along with 4.36 million hectares of farmland, said the headquarters.
