President George W. Bush gave a tearful eulogy to his father, President George H.W. Bush, Wednesday at a state funeral for the 41st president of the United States.The younger Bush choked up as he quoted his father's inaugural address from 1989."In his inaugural address, the 41st President of the United States said this: 'We cannot hope to only leave our children a bigger car, a bigger bank account,'" Bush said. "'We must hope to give them a sense of what it means to be a loyal friend, a loving parent. A citizen who leaves who home, his neighborhood and his town a better place than when he found it. What do we want the men and women who work with us to say when we are no longer there? Refugees who have waited years to get to the United States sometimes arrive only to find out their life's work does not translate to opportunities in America.Pima County Public Libraries have a unique approach to helping those who are new to the city and country.Librarians are helping immigrants and refugees from all over the world adapt to U.S. Culture by helping their degrees earned overseas recognized here in America.Henri Nzeyimana was born in Burundi. In late-April 2015, political unrest took over the East African country. It resulted in an attempted coup d'état. Hundreds of civilians were killed, and thousands of peaceful political demonstrators were tortured.Nzeyimana is an asylum seeker that has been in the U.S. for three years. "Every time you have to leave your country and go to another country — not because of your choice but because you're not able to enjoy freedom — it hurts," Nzeyimana explained. He decided to move to Tucson to find work —  task that he initially thought was impossible."To hear that you've been at school for more than 10 years, working for more than 20 and then all of a sudden you have to start fresh, that was traumatizing," he said.  However, that changed when he met Citizenship Librarian Mary Givins at the Eckstrom-Columbus Library. Since he has two masters degrees from two different European universities, Givins thought if he could get a hold of his transcripts he can get at least a substitute teacher degree in America.After some thinking, that's exactly what he did."I showed him the process for getting his degree evaluated, translated from French and then he had that paper submitted to the department of education," Givins said.Givins says immigrants and refugees don't realize that the degrees they receive from their countries often transfer to the U.S. She says all it takes is a lot of steps to get them started. "If people have access to their transcripts from their university, then something can be done," she explained. All the Pima County Public Library branches offer the "Job Help Program," twice a week. It provides support for degree translation and evaluation.The primary goal is to get the diplomas earned overseas recognized here in the U.S. A bonus for those in the program is working with librarians to create resumes and even apply for jobs. Click here to get more information. 2426

Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter won re-election in the 50th Congressional District, despite facing federal charges of campaign fraud. With 100 percent of the precincts reporting, Hunter had just over 54 percent of the vote against Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar."He's strong on the 2nd Amendment, he's strong on our defense, he's very pro-military," said Dan Summers, a Ramona resident who voted for Hunter and celebrated at his campaign event Tuesday night. Hunter did not make himself available to the media, and in a statement said he looked forward to representing the 50th Congressional District on issues that matter to them."For 10 years, I have consistently and unapologetically focused on rebuilding the military, protecting the border, which includes a border wall, cutting taxes, supporting our veterans, creating small business jobs and economic development, upholding the 2nd Amendment and protecting the sanctity of life," Hunter said in the statement. Hunter's statement did not address the criminal charges, which he and his wife Margaret pleaded not guilty to in Federal Court earlier this year. The two are accused of misusing 0,000 in campaign contributions and falsifying reports. Still, if convicted, there is no rule in the House that Hunter would have to give up his seat. Expulsion requires a two-thirds vote, which would require Republican votes.Political analyst John Dadian says he sees Hunter fighting to keep his seat. "Technically he could still serve, and technically he could still serve from a jail cell," he said. "For example, he were to only get one year he could technically stay in and when he gets out in a year have a year left on his term."Under California law, the governor would have 14 days to set an election date for a vacant House seat. That would happen between 126 and 140 days later, or with the next regular election, if it's within 180 days. The Hunters are due back in court Dec. 3.   2005

Protests broke out in St. Louis after former police officer Jason Stockley was acquitted Friday of first-degree murder in the 2011 shooting death of black driver Anthony Lamar Smith.At least 23 people were arrested and 10 law enforcement officers injured in protests Friday night.The city had been on edge for days. Shortly after the verdict, people gathered outside the courthouse to protest the controversial ruling. President Donald Trump's confidant Roger Stone is rebuffing a request from the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee for documents and an interview connected to 2016 Russian election meddling, invoking his Fifth Amendment rights.Stone's attorney Grant Smith sent a letter to Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California stating that Stone was declining Feinstein's requests, which she released over Twitter on Tuesday."The requests, as previously stated to staff, are far too overbroad, far too overreaching, far too wide ranging both in their all-embracing list of persons to whom the request could relate with whom Mr. Stone has communicated over the past three years, and the 'documents concerning' imprecision of the requests," Smith wrote."Mr. Stone's invocation of his Fifth Amendment privilege must be understood by all to be the assertion of a Constitutional right by an innocent citizen who denounces secrecy," the letter states.Smith noted that Stone has already testified to the House Intelligence Committee. Special counsel Robert Mueller is also investigating whether Stone was communicating with Julian Assange and WikiLeaks during the 2016 election either directly or through intermediaries.As the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Feinstein has no power to compel Stone to testify or produce documents. When Democrats take back the House in January, the House Intelligence Committee may have a renewed interest in Stone, as Rep. Adam Schiff has indicated he thinks Stone may have misled his committee.Stone's attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 1619
