SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some "national holidays" make lunch and dinner that much easier. Take Wednesday, when America celebrates National Cheeseburger Day.Across the country, hungry Americans can grab special burger deals in honor of the delicious day.And what's a holiday without a little tradition. The burger is said to have been invented in New Haven, Conn., in 1900 when Louis Lassen took a steak trimmings, grilled them into a patty, and served it between two slices of bread. But, of course, there are several rival claims to that. The cheeseburger has its own origin claim out of Denver, Colo., where it's believed Louis Ballast created the cheeseburger at his restaurant in 1935.In any case, the dish is enjoyed by many throughout the world who are much more interested in its taste than true origin. And by now, we're sure you're more interested in today's deals. Go forth and enjoy!Applebee's: Get a Classic Bacon Cheeseburger for .99, plus the chain's endless fries with the burger on Wednesday.Burger King: Burger King's deal lasts through Sunday, giving diners the chance to get a cheeseburger for 59 cents via the chain's mobile app.Dairy Queen: Grab the two for Super Snack deal, which comes with mix and match options of a cheeseburger, a small sundae, fries, pretzel sticks or chicken tenders.Island's: Take off any burger at Island's on Wednesday by becoming a Rewards Member through the Island's mobile app.Jack in the Box: Order up a free burger with any purchase through the Jack in the Box mobile app at participating locations Wednesday.McDonald's: Get two cheeseburgers for via the McDonald's mobile app from Sept. 18 - 24 at participating locations.Red Robin: Red Robin is offering a Gourmet Cheeseburger and Bottomless Steak Fries for with any beverage purchase at participating restaurants on Wednesday.Smashburger: Get buy-one-get-one free double classic Smashburgers on Wednesday.Wendy's: It's not a special deal for National Cheeseburger Day, but a Biggie Bag with a bacon double stack, nuggest, fries, and a drink is the perfect fix for Wednesday. 2097

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — State officials hope California’s new 10 p.m. stay-at-home order will slow the spread of COVID-19, otherwise, another 10,000 San Diegans are projected to contract the virus in the next 10 days. That’s according to a new county-by-county forecast from Facebook, which rolled out the prediction software last month.Facebook projects L.A. County will see the second-largest increase in cases in the country by November 30. San Diego County is projected to add the 15th most cases, reaching a total of 78,594 infections by Nov. 30.The two-week forecast was released before Governor Gavin Newsom announced enhanced restrictions. Facebook will release a new two-week forecast next week.“Many other forecasts around the world are only predicting caseload at a country or state level,” said Laura McGorman with Facebook’s Data for Good team. “We’re trying to be much more local in this approach because we know so much of the COVID-19 response is in fact local.”McGorman said the forecast tool could help county and state officials plan hospital bed space, ICU capacity, ventilators and other critical supplies. The map is powered by artificial intelligence that draws on seven kinds of data. They use outside metrics like confirmed cases, doctor visits and the weather combined with information Facebook collects like a survey of people’s symptoms and GPS location data. The location data helps gauge whether people are staying home and isolating or circulating among the community, according to McGorman.Facebook only pulls data from users who opt in and no, they’re not reading your posts. All of the information, which is aggregated to the county or state level to protect privacy, is available for the public to download. The tech giant initially started Data for Good three years ago to help with disaster-relief projects, McGorman said. Among other applications, their location data can quickly predict if evacuations are working.“Typically, groups like the Red Cross have to knock door-to-door to see if people are still home, or wait for people to show up at shelters to see if they’ve gotten out of harm’s way,” she said. The software has also been used to detect network outages when a hurricane knocks out cellphone towers, she said.Facebook’s COVID-19 mapping tools have been used to inform policymakers in New York and Mexico, and the data has helped analyze the effectiveness of stay-at-home orders in California, McGorman said. 2457

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SANDAG's Board of Directors passed the 3.4 million budget at their meeting on Friday The proposal includes the largest transportation projects in the county. The budget will used between now and the end of the 2025 Fiscal Year. The vote passed 11 (yes) - 7 (no) - 1 (abstain). As part of SANDAG's proposed "Five Big Moves" initiative to modernize transportation in the city, the money will be put towards "Complete Corridor" projects.RELATED: SANDAG leaders unveil bold vision for future of public transit in San DiegoAccording to a budget proposal released this week, the majority of the money will go towards transit and public transportation-based projects. However, Poway Mayor and SANDAG chair, Steve Vaus presented a revised budget with co-author, Escondido mayor, Paul McNamara. Some of the items in the budget include million for new trolley cars on the Blue Line, .8 million to purchase two new coaster trains for the North County Transit District, and million for preliminary designs on a central mobility hub. The Vaus-McNamara budget pulled the million slated to convert HOV lanes on the 5 North to express lanes, to road expansion projects in North County. million will be allocated to environmental studies and designs for new HOV lanes along SR78 between I-5 and I-15. million will be used to add lanes for SR 52, and the notoriously dangerous state route 67. "The transit plan for SANDAG is to get 10% of the people using transit, which leaves 90% of the rest of us all on roads," says County Supervisor and SANDAG Board Member Jim Desmond. "We need to have roads as well."RELATED: County Supervisors speak out against SANDAG mass transit planOne sticking point is how to use money from the TransNet Tax. Voters approved it in 2004 as a way to fund freeway projects. The current budget has 0 million of money from the tax. The rest comes from other federal, state and local funds.SANDAG Director Hasan Ikhrata defends his decision to emphasize transit. He says the County needs to hit specific benchmarks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to get more funding."If we are to sustain ourselves and preserve our quality of life, we need to provide our residents with an alternative," he says. "We can't build our way out of congestion. I think this will put the agency in legal jeopardy.""Freeway widenings are terrible for the environment. Terrible for public health and out right wrong," one man said on the podium. "We need public transportation systems that work for us," said a woman representing the Sierra Club.San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez, who is also a member of the SANDAG Board, agrees. In a statement to 10News, Gomez said, "We need to create a transportation system that offers residents a real choice in how they move throughout their day.RELATED: Ramona residents worry about future of SR 67 amid SANDAG's new plan"A successful regional transportation system is efficient, affordable, and meets the state-mandated reductions in vehicle miles traveled and greenhouse gas emissions." 3082

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Stephanie Eppig didn't sleep much last night. She was busy transforming her business model - under a very tight deadline.“I had to redo the entire schedule, try to line up a food partnership, change our hours,” she said.Eppig co-owns Eppig Brewing, with locations in vista and Point Loma.It was getting back up to speed just in time for July, its busiest month .Then, the devastating news Monday - the county - placing strict new limits on bars, breweries and wineries, to stop the increased spread of the coronavirus. The Vista location - back to Curbside pickup only. As for Point Loma, all guests coming will be required to order food, prepared by a food truck on site.“It's really a punch in the gut right now for us and our employees,” Eppig said. “It’s awful because this is our livelihood and this is our employees’ livelihood and we have zero control over our ability to run our business.”To make matters worse, Eppig already exhausted all the money from her federal Paycheck Protection Program loan - which got the brewery through the first shut down. There's no new agreement on a second round of stimulus.Attorney Kelly DuFord Williams, managing partner at Slate Law Group, says businesses can talk to their banks about lending opportunities - but that involves risk.“Either the government in California or if the Federal Government is going to make that decision, they need to fund another round of P.P.P., so that people can keep their jobs, and people's mental health and family life can have some sort of stability,” said DuFord Williams, who represents small businesses and restaurants.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said Tuesday that he is hopeful federal officials will continue to provide economic support for impacted businesses and workers. The employees who went back to work and need unemployment once again will have to rectify for the benefits, the state Employment Development Department said. They can reopen their existing claims for a year, assuming they haven’t exhausted the money. The best ways to do so is online. 2072
