DENVER - If you’re lucky enough to get CailinAnne Johnson as your teacher, she’s going to make sure you have everything you need to succeed in her class, even if she has to buy it herself. “If that means I need to provide them with pens, pencils, scissors, a backpack, a charger for their computer I want to be able to do that so they feel like no matter what they can come, especially inside my classroom,” said Johnson. Most of the time that means it’s coming out of her pocket. “My first year of teaching wad 2017, and by the end of the year I had spent ,000 of my own money to provide resources for my students,” said Johnson. She has a big heart, but her wallet might not be big enough to keep up. She is far from the only one who does this. She’s not even the only teacher at North High School in Denver who does this. “Maybe one thousand dollars per school year,” said Victoria Filbrandt, a science teacher who works across the building from Johnson. “It’s to 0 each month and then adding up over time,” said Filbrandt Teachers paying out of pocket for classroom supplies is not new, but teachers are finding new approaches to help offset the cost. Johnson used a website adoptaclassroom.org to raise close to 0 for her class. Anyone can go on the website and donate money to teachers so they can buy supplies their students need. That can make a big difference for teachers across the country. According to the National Center of Education Statistics, on average teachers spend about 0 of their own money on supplies for their classroom every year. “I fundraise for simple things like color pencils, scissors to make sure students have enough,” said Johnson. But she doesn’t stop with the basics. “We were able to get a workstation bike, which was really cool, for our antsy students, who sitting in a chair for 15 minutes is just not going to work for them,” said Johnson. A stationary bike that students can ride and do their work at the same time. Another example of new solutions fixing old problems. And adopt a classroom isn’t the only place teachers are turning to, it’s just part of the movement. “#ClearTheList is a pay it forward initiative where teachers give to other teachers, donors give teachers,” said Courtney Jones. Jones took matters into her own hands this summer when she was getting ready to head back to school. She made a wish list on amazon and shared it on twitter with the hashtag #ClearTheList. Then anyone can go online and buy an item for these teachers. “It’s not just resources, but it’s food and hygiene items and resource books for myself to learn how to teach better it’s all these components,” She says more than 200,000 teachers have participated on social media. These types of ideas have made a huge difference to teachers all over the country. “Feeling them expressing the warmth of this classroom and the hands on experience they get to do has been, you know, not only nice on my bank account but also on their academic experience,” said Filbrandt “So figuring out how am I going to afford resources for my classroom to make sure my students can feel successful versus how much is going to my rent, my car payment things like that, it’s really tricky,” said Johnson. But Jones says she didn’t start clear the list so Johnson could buy colored pencils and Filbrandt could buy supplies for a physics lab. She says she wants people to start talking about how teachers don’t have what they need to do their job. “It’s a way to yes get items and resources for your classrooms and students but more importantly it’s a way to start a conversation about the ridiculousness of not having resources,” said Jones. She also says, while it might be top of mind to help out a teacher when it’s back to school season, these teachers have to buy supplies all year long. “I’m going to be using the last 0 as we’re winding down getting closer to finals, because that’s definitely when things go missing or people don’t have it,” said Johnson. So these teachers are finding new ways to attack old problems, but one thing they say will remain the same is their dedication to their students. “I like teaching. It’s fun. DENVER — Being a school nurse is a lot more than bumps, bruises, bloody noses and band-aids. And now, with a shortage of nurses, school nurses are getting even more added to their workload.“I travel around from school to school,” said Brooke Goudy, a school nurse at Bromwell Elementary School in Denver. “I work one school, two days out of the week; another one, one day out of the week; and two days a week, I’m going around and evaluating school nurses. So I’m visiting maybe up to 10 schools a month.”For most of Goudy’s career, this has been her schedule. She’s not an outlier. A lot of school nurses have a hectic schedule. It’s a growing problem for them and the schools they serve.In 2018, more than 60 percent of schools across the country didn’t have a nurse on campus full time, according to the National Association of School Nurses.“Every day is extremely busy,” Goudy said.School nursing shortages have been a key point at teacher strikes in Chicago and Los Angeles this year. The Chicago walkout was settled when the district agreed to put a nurse on campus at all of the city’s schools, five days a week. That’s become rare in most states.“In the past I’ve been traveling to a different school nearly every day of the week,” Goudy said.The lack of nurses puts a strain on the students who need them.“There was times when my seizures were out of hand,” said Delvechio Jones, a recent high school graduate. “I had Nurse Lucy and the rest of the faculty and staff here to help me with them.”Jones said having a nurse helped him be in class, even when he didn’t want to be.“She was there for me when I needed her the most, and she helped me get through a lot of tough things,” he said.Lucy Roberts is a school nurse at the high school Jones graduated from. However, she’s not a full-time staff member there. “I work in this school three days a week,” she said. The rest of the time she’s at other schools in the district. The other two days, Manual High School goes without a nurse.When a nurse isn’t around, schools have turned to other solutions.Kelly Grenham has been with Children’s Hospital Colorado for decades. For almost two decades, she has been a school nurse consultant.While she trains school nurses, she also trains everyone else. “They’re the secretaries, the office clerks, the people that are in the office, the bus drivers,” Grenham said. “I’m training the people there to make sure every other day of the week that they are safe.”Full-time employees at schools have taken on some nurse responsibilities. Goudy has monthly meetings with full-time school staff members to go over plans to keep kids healthy.“Schools as a whole are trying to figure out how to get more school nurses,” Grenham said.“They need the money to be able to do that, and sometimes with their budget, they can’t,” Goudy said.About 76.7% of school nurses are funded by local education dollars, according to the National Association of School Nurses.“Community members understand the kind of impact that can be had with a school nurse in the building,” Roberts said. “Parents and community members can take action by telling principals, ‘Why don’t you have a nurse here?’ ”“The research does show if you have management of chronic health conditions, the visits to the emergency room go way down,” Grenham said.“Health comes first. CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Clinton Township man has been charged with operating as a health professional without a license after a search indicated he was running a dental practice in the basement of his home.Police say they served a search warrant on an unnamed suspect at his home. In the basement, they a dentist chair, an X-ray machine, dentistry utensils and molds for teeth among other items.Reports allege that receipts for equipment and supplies were found outside the home as well.According to police, the suspect stated he was seeing one to two patients in his home per day, using his church as a word-of-mouth referral service.“We are thankful that someone had the courage to come forward and report the defendant for his criminal behavior,” Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith said. “The wanton disregard for the law by the defendant is disturbing.”The suspect faces up to 4 years in prison for the felony. 931
