SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego is close to completing a project that will protect a popular Ocean Beach walking path from erosion.People who live along Orchard Avenue say the pathway that goes along the coast has been falling apart in the past few years, as tidal surges wear away the concrete."It was falling apart. The sidewalk's coming up, you could have tripped," says Tony Nieves, who lives on the corner nearby. "It's nice to see something done about it."Over the winter, the City started construction on a 3,000 project to rebuild the walkway and add break rocks and rip rap to protect it. It's part of a bigger plan to revitalize staircases and walkways along the coast to improve beach access, which the city started working on in 2008.Rainy, windy weather delayed the Orchard Avenue part of the project, which was supposed to be completed by the start of spring.This past week, the city installed large, man-made rocks to the coast to break up waves. They also added green metal cages around them, leading people to fear they'll get so big they may block views."I come down here most nights that I'm not working, just to catch the sunset," says Brittany Hagedorn. "Living a block away makes it easy."In a statement, the City told 10News the boulders will get another layer of concrete above the cages and they hope to have the project completed before Memorial Day Weekend.In the meantime, people who live nearby will have to wait to use the path again.The full statement from the City of San Diego is below:"The man made boulders being constructed are part of the project to reconstruct the beach access walkway at Orchard Ave. The boulders are intended to protect the newly-installed sidewalk, because this section of sidewalk has previously been seriously damaged by tidal surges. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of Kiera Bergman says a recent development in her murder case has left them frustrated and fearful.The 19-year-old woman was missing for weeks before her body was discovered in the desert outside of Phoenix last year. Bergman's boyfriend, Jon Clark, was charged in the murder; but this month, a judge lowered his bond from million to 0,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced new safety measures for its offices Thursday as the coronavirus pandemic continues across the state.Starting Thursday morning, every person who goes to a DMV location will get their temperature checked before they're allowed inside.Previously, only people getting in-car driving tests were subject to temperature checks.A DMV spokesperson told ABC 10News they'll follow CDC guidelines, only letting people inside if their temperature is below 100.4 degrees."We always follow the guidelines that are issued by the CDC," said DMV spokesperson Cynthia Moreno. "So, following their guidelines, we decided that it would be best to start taking the temperature of all of our customers and our employees to make sure that we follow the safety protocols."The temperature screening is in addition to safety measures already in place, which include mask requirements, social distancing, limited services available and hand-washing and sanitizing stations located throughout each field office.Because of all that, DMV officials say it's best to do as much as you can on the agency's website and avoid coming into the offices, if possible."We want to make sure the people who come to our offices feel safe," said Moreno. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mountain lion euthanized by California Department of Fish and Wildlife wardens is the same animal responsible for attacking a boy at Los Pe?asquitos Canyon Preserve, CDFW announced Friday. The 4-year-old boy was among 11 people hiking the North San Diego County trail Memorial Day when the 80-pound female mountain lion attacked him. Wardens who went to the scene found the animal’s tracks and encountered it moments later. The mountain lion appeared to have little fear of humans: an abnormal behavior, CDFW said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Tens of thousands of unemployed San Diegans are about to see the biggest chunk of their income disappear. That's because the extra 0 in weekly unemployment payments from the Federal Government are expiring this month. The loss will reduce the maximum weekly unemployment paymeny to the 0 that comes from the state. City Heights resident Abby Heilbron is about to see her weekly checks go from ,050 to 0. Heilbron, whose husband is still working full time, said a dozen of her friends moved out of San Diego during the pandemic, unable to afford the region's high cost of living."And it is going to be a really scary time for a lot of people here, very quickly," Heilbron said. The extra 0 was part of the Federal stimulus package passed by Congress and the president in late March. The state Employment Development Department says the payments will end July 25. Whether to extend the benefits is now a political issue on Capitol Hill. The loss of the income comes when San Diego County restaurants are not allowed to serve indoors, meaning one of the area's biggest sectors is not hiring. "I've heard the argument that this gives people the incentive not to work, but the problem is that there are fewer alternatives for those people to go work at," said Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego.
