SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County needs to stay off the state watch list for two weeks straight for most schools to reopen in-person. But, some schools won’t have to wait that long.As of Friday afternoon, 56 elementary schools applied for a waiver through the county health department. If approved, it would allow them to bring students back on campus regardless of our status on the state watch list.The waiver is only open to schools serving K-6 students. Once applications are reviewed by the county they’ll be sent to Sacramento.“The state can give input or guidance,” said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. “If we don’t hear back in three days then those will be approved.”Mt. Helix Academy in La Mesa submitted their application this week.“I’m hoping to hear back from the state and the county by next week.” Said Director, Mike Collins. “Our plan is to welcome students back on campus on Monday August 31st when we’re ready for those kids.”The school has been open for summer programs where they implemented new safety measures like masks, frequent cleaning, and social distancing.“I saw all the students had their masks on and I made a big deal, ‘Everyone has their masks on! We’re so happy!’” said Collins. “We really try to encourage our students.”For the wavier to get approved the county reviews each applicant’s proposed safety plan. They’re looking for things like having adequate personal protective equipment and if students can be kept in small groups.County Montessori School in Poway has been fine-tuning their safety measures through their summer programs.They took advantage of the waiver process right away.“The application became available last Friday night and we applied Monday,” said Head of School, Adela Corrales. “If our waiver comes through next week we’re prepared to open on site on August 24th”The county told ABC 10News they were still reviewing applications late Friday afternoon and had not sent any to the state for approval yet. 1971

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Residents can learn about the city's most iconic buildings this weekend during an open house of nearly 100 sites.Open House San Diego, hosted by the San Diego Architectural Foundation, is offering a free look into sites including buildings downtown, in Barrio Logan, Balboa Park, La Jolla, and elsewhere in the county March 23 and 24. Guests get designer-led tours of hidden gems and treasures across San Diego and can participate in a photo contest to win prizes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Rocks or BB pellets have hit more than a dozen taxis as they traveled near the San Diego International Airport over the past week, cab drivers told 10News.The attacks along Harbor Drive have left cracks in their windshields and dents in the vehicles’ sides, cabbies said.“It's life threatening and we are just shocked what's going on,” said cabbie Ahmad Saddat-Nejad.Saddat-Nejad, who has been driving for almost 30 years, said he has never had anything like these attacks happen.“My car was not even in motion. Suddenly, I hear ‘boom’. Somebody threw a rock,” he said, reporting an incident on Harbor Drive at Laurel Street.“It happened to five cars yesterday again,” said Alex Tegegne of the San Diego Taxi Association.Tegegne said the attacks occur every night after dark, from North Harbor Drive down the Embarcadero.“We start to say do we need a helmet, or what should we do now? Should we avoid going on Harbor? What can we do,” Tegegne told 10News.In all, 17 cabs have been targeted.“It is totally very scary, and the customers don't feel comfortable about it,” said Tegegne.Cab drivers say they can’t afford to lose those customers. The success of Uber and Lyft have taken a toll on the taxi industry.“We don't know if this thing is taking business from us. We are already on life support to begin with, but this will be another threat to our customers and also ourselves," Tegegne said.The threat could be enough to put drivers out of work.“He could have killed me and I’m scared of driving now. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's unemployment rate ticked down to 14.8%, but a potential new wave of closures could wipe out a large portion of the recent job gains.The San Diego Association of Governments reported Thursday that the jobless rate in the region is continuing to drop from a peak of 25% on May 9. Still, roughly 250,000 workers in the county remain unemployed amid the Coronavirus outbreak. Ray Major, the agency's chief economist, said the increased spread of the virus could lead to prolonged economic frustration. "What (the report) shows is that we're ready to go back to work, but that the recovery is probably going to be slow, and we're probably going to be having this conversation with double digit unemployment throughout the summer and probably into the fall," he said. The potential drawbacks would take a financial and mental toll on thousands of workers who returned to their jobs, only to be sent back to file for unemployment. Season and Ian McKesson had to close their two hair salons when the pandemic broke in March and got by on unemployment. "It was hard working 50 to 60 hours a week and being proud that you can maintain everything and then all of a sudden you can't do anything. It was almost like being ripped apart, for me," Season said. The McKessons had to shutter their Mission Hills salon permanently but did reopen their Fallbrook location, called Mary Jane North. That cleared the way for seven stylists, including them, to go back to work. "We get nervous because there's things that are still shutting down around, and so that's a little daunting," Season said.
