What do waffles have to do with severe weather safety?Everything apparently.Believe it or not, FEMA depends on Waffle House to gauge just how dangerous conditions are during hurricanes. It's called the “Waffle House index.”It has three levels: If you see a Waffle House that's open and has a full menu, the area is in the clear. If it has a limited menu, people should probably start making safety plans. That means the restaurant either has no power or is running on a generator. And if it's closed, there's likely severe flooding or damage in the area and people should get to safety. Waffle House locations rarely close, so it has to be a really extreme case of severe weather.“We may have to shut some restaurants down,” says Pat Warner, the director of public relations and external affairs for Waffle House. “That's a little tough for us because all our restaurants are 24/7. We don't know how to turn things off so we really have to shut down a restaurant in an orderly fashion.” Waffle House has a storm center outside of Atlanta. That's where the company tracks the storm and sends out information to its restaurants. But it also has people on the ground looking at conditions. Those people are the ones who have a more accurate view of what's happening and help decide when restaurants should close.Waffle House is prepared with a jump team that actually takes over for regular staff during a storm. This helps restaurants to continue operating while employees go home and stay safe with their families. 1522

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is introducing a new Purple Heart Medal Forever stamp this month. The Forever stamp will go on sale nationwide on Oct. 4 and will be issued in self-adhesive sheets of 20.Like the Purple Heart Medal, the USPS says the stamp will honor the members of the U.S. military who have been wounded or killed in action. The Purple Heart Medal has a long history that starts with George Washington, who established the Badge of Military Merit during the Revolutionary War. It was discontinued after the war, but reinstated with a new design in 1932, the 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth. The new Forever stamp is a redesign that features a purple border that matches the brilliant purple of the medal and its ribbon. Customers can purchase the stamp through The Postal Store at 829

Walmart has removed about 1,000 third-party items from its website in the wake of two mass shootings after determining the products violate company policy, a company spokesperson told CNN Tuesday. The retail giant regularly reviews its 75 million online offerings, looking for items that violate its ban on merchandise that glorifies violence, the company said. A recent review focused on gun-related items after 31 people were killed in mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, earlier this month. The products were removed over the last week, the spokesperson said. The retailer has been facing pressure to remove firearms from its physical stores and criticized for selling pro-gun T-shirts on its e-commerce site.Last week, Walmart pulled displays of violent video games in its stores. But that policy change does not apply to the sale of controversial video games nor to the sale and display of firearms. At least 31 people were killed in separate shootings earlier this month in an El Paso Walmart and outside a strip of entertainment venues in Dayton. The Dayton shooter was killed by police within 30 seconds of opening fire. The 21-year-old suspect in the El Paso shooting surrendered to police on the day of the attack. He told police he was targeting Mexicans, according to an arrest affidavit. The El Paso shooting came a week after a disgruntled Walmart employee killed two co-workers and wounded an officer at a Southaven, Mississippi store. Walmart's CEO Doug McMillon said that the company will respond in a "thoughtful and deliberate" way to both shootings. 1592

WASHINGTON — Hiring jumped in February as employers added 273,000 jobs, evidence that the economy was in strong shape before the coronavirus began to sweep through the U.S. The Labor Department said Friday that the unemployment rate fell to 3.5%, matching a 50-year low, down from 3.6% in the previous month. The job gain comes from a survey of payrolls in the second week of February, so the healthy gains pre-date the viral outbreak. 447
