CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a firearm after he allegedly pointed a rifle at a family that was setting off fireworks, authorities said today.Samuel Austin Laurabee, 28, was arrested Saturday night in the 500 block of Woodlawn Avenue, according to Lt. Scott Adkins of the Chula Vista Police Department.Laurabee allegedly pointed a bolt-action rifle at members of a nearby family who were setting off Fourth of July fireworks, Adkins said.Laurabee was booked into the San Diego Central Jail, with bail set at ,000, on one felony charge of assault with a firearm, according to jail records. He is scheduled for arraignment on July 31. 681

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV)— The Chula Vista Police department is investigating a home invasion robbery that happened Saturday night on the 1600 block of Claret Cup Drive.80-year-old Don Oder believes he may have had an encounter with one of the suspects.He told 10News he was unloading the bags from his late night shopping trip Saturday and saw a man walk into his garage.“He says 'I’m thirsty. Can I have some water?' So I got him a glass of water,” Oder said. That was around 10:30 p.m. at Oder's home near Camarena Elementary School.At the time, Oder did not know that the person who asked for water could have been a suspect in a home invasion robbery that happened moments prior. “I didn’t put two and two together right away,” Oder said. Chula Vista Police said someone fired a gun at a nearby condo on Claret Cup Drive around the same time.Two people entered and robbed the residents, then ran east. No one was hurt.Looking back now, Oder believes one of suspects may have been the man hiding in his garage.“Pretty obvious that he didn’t want to be seen,” Oder said. Oder describes him as a young, built, clean-cut man.He was surprised at the man’s get-away car.“He said, I’ve called an Uber and it’s going to be here in a few minutes.”Oder stayed with him for a few minutes until the man suddenly ran.Moments later, he and his grandson called police. The next morning, Oder’s son Tim was walking toward the crime scene.Tim Oder said he found a bundle of stuff next to a car along Exploration Falls Drive.“I pulled a hat out, walked a little further, and then I started pulling some gloves, and I thought, oh my God, these are white latex gloves!” Tim Oder said. The water cup and the bundle of items are now with Chula Vista Police, being processed for evidence. The Oders said the fact that one family had two run-ins with an unusual crime in a safe neighborhood is a crazy coincidence.“It seemed so strange, you know?” Oder said. Chula Vista Police said the suspects are still at large and asked the community to be vigilant. 2154

(KGTV) -- Hope, peace, unity and love are some of the simple words painted on rocks that Maria Gutierrez walked by each morning."I was thankful and I would look for more and more stones," Maria said.Maria just moved to the neighborhood and was surprised to learn who was behind those painted messages."One day I was walking my dogs and I saw Ava carrying a couple of stones and just quietly putting one down," Maria described.Ava is her neighbor, an 8-year-old doing her part in lifting others in difficult times."I’s because a lot of people aren’t happy right now. My mom and I were trying to make the people in our neighborhood happy," said Ava.I asked Ava what works like hope meant for her and she replied, "if someone doesn’t think they can do something, there’s hope they’ll make it."Her mom Cyndi said others neighbors have joined in their "rocks of hope" movement."We noticed other stones placed around the tree. It was cool because other people starting doing it as well," Cyndi said.Maria moved to Eastlake last month and said Ava's efforts showed how helpful and hopeful her neighborhood could be."It made me smile and I didn't really know anybody here. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Chula Vista Police have arrested six suspects in an assault with a deadly weapon and robbery of a 16-year-old boy that occurred at a Chula Vista restaurant last Thursday, law enforcement officials announced.Police officials said that four juveniles and two adults, all of whom are suspected of participating in the April 11 attack, were taken into custody on Wednesday. Four of the suspects, aged between 15- and 17-years-old, attended Morse High School and have since been suspended.The two adult suspects, Kent Pasunting, 18, and Aldrin Uy, 19, attended Mark Twain High School, an alternative/continuation high school with a campus located at Morse High School. The victim and family, along with representatives of the Cotixan restaurant, all cooperated in the investigation. All six suspects were identified, in part, by the video, Collum said.The family says their teen was waiting for his mom to pick him up at Cotixan Mexican Restaurant last Thursday after school, when a group of teens walked in and started kicking and punching the boy.In the video, you can see someone on the ground getting repeatedly punched and kicked. He says everything started days before on Instagram, when, he says, his son told someone to stop harassing one of his friends. Martin says one teen then started messaging his son telling him he was going to beat him up.Martin says the incident was reported to Chula Vista Police but he's worried the teens will get away with what they did.Collum said the dispute began last month when the victim and suspect got into a heated exchange on social media over comments made to one of the victim’s friends. "On April 11th the victim and his girlfriend were sitting at the Cotixan restaurant when the suspects walked-in unexpectedly," Collum said. "Police believe the suspects entered the restaurant with the intent to attack the victim.""The suspects confronted the victim and the group began assaulting him," Collum said.The victim suffered a fractured left wrist. 2745

CINCINNATI — Matt Moeddel worked tirelessly to comfort and care for his COVID-19 patients, insisting on staying by their sides as they battled a disease so contagious and deadly that most patients who die from it must do so alone. The 43-year-old nurse wouldn't let that happen and held his patients' hands for as long as he could -- until he became infected with COVID-19 himself.His former patients still send his family thank you letters."He wouldn't let somebody die without somebody there with them," said Bethany Moeddel, Matt's sister.Matt was the director of nursing at Bridgeway Pointe in Arlington Heights, Ohio, and won awards for the job he did. For Bethany Moeddel, he was a big brother, the middle child and her Reds game day partner. She said he dreamed of one day buying a cabin in the Smoky Mountains."All he worried about was 'my patients, I need to be there, I need to take care of them,'" said Bethany.He'd just adopted a dog, Wilson, and was settling into his new townhouse when COVID-19 began infecting his patients."He said, 'nobody wants to die without having like a human contact or somebody there,'" said Bethany. "So he would go into the rooms and hold their hands."By May, Matt tested positive for COVID-19 and his Type 2 diabetes made him vulnerable to complications from the illness. Bethany said she suggested her brother go to the hospital, but he hesitated, reluctant to leave his dog alone.Then, 21 days later, family found Matt dead in his home."He was sitting on the stairs with his shoes on and his keys in his pocket," said Bethany.
