SARASOTA, Fla. — The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested 21 people during an Operation Intercept V, an initiative to protect Sarasota County children from online predators. The suspects, ranging in age from 22 to 58, responded to internet-based ads, online apps or social media sites and engaged in sexually explicit written and verbal conversations, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.One of the suspects promised to stay with a 14-year-old child if he impregnated her while another agreed to have sex with who he believed was a 12-year-old. More than four of the men brought condoms and some offered to bring drugs. Several suspects sent explicit photos. They all traveled with the intent to have sex with a male or female child, according to deputies. “You would think the frequency of Internet predator operations here in Sarasota County and surrounding jurisdictions would reduce the number of criminals prowling online for the sole purpose of sexually exploiting children,” Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight said. “Unfortunately, for some reason, they still think it’s OK to disrupt our community and the children within it. Let this be a reminder for parents to stay cognizant of what their children are doing in this new age of technology. Remember to be a parent. SAN YSIDRO (CNS) - A 61-year-old man who ran into a street in San Ysidro, tripped and fell, was run over by an SUV and killed, authorities said this morning.The man exited a business in the 500 block of E. San Ysidro Boulevard at 2:05 p.m. Friday and as he reached the asphalt of the street, tripped and fell face first and was run over by a Cadillac Escalade pulling out of an adjacent parking lot, Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department said.The pedestrian, who was not identified, sustained fatal injuries, Heims said. 546

School nurses already have a lot of responsibilities, but the possibility of students being back in classrooms this fall may add a new duty: screening for COVID-19."There seem to be no certainties. The guidance changes frequently and there is some concern that the guidance doesn’t take into account the realities in a school building," says Laurie Combe, the President of the National Association of School Nurses.Combe says the pressure will be on school nurses to help screen and isolate any students or staff who could be showing symptoms of COVID-19. But not all schools across the country have the ability to do this."We're supposed to isolate those students or staff members and does a school have the space or capacity to do that?" says Combe.According to the Department of Education, there are 98,000 public schools in the United States. The National Association of School Nurses’ research has shown 25% of those schools have no access to a school nurse."Not part-time, not one nurse covering multiple schools, just no school nurse," says Combe.“COVID has revealed to us is that schools are relying heavily on school nurse expertise to guide their procedures and policies moving forward into reopening,” Combe added. “So what do those schools that don’t have a school nurse do?"Visalia Unified School District in California has about 32,000 students. The district's 12 credentialed school nurses help lead an additional 36 nurses in meeting students' health needs."Our health department reached out and identified the 12 school nurses as emergency disaster workers so instead of enjoying a summer vacation, the nurses are working at the health department and helping to monitor COVID," says the district's Director of Health Services Suzie Skadan. Skadan says that extra experience will be helpful when school is back in session."They will have this additional experience and hands-on happening so they will know what to do when we come back," says Skadan.Visalia unified is working closely with their local health department to put every CDC-recommended protocol in place come the fall."It is an added burden for the school nurse but it's very necessary to keep our students safe. So we think planning ahead and having systems in place will make the best of this situation," says Skadan. Both the National Association of School Nurses and Visalia Unified say ideally there'd be more nurses on hand this fall."Unfortunately, we're having big budget cuts. It's been a bad budget year and then we have COVID on top of that so we are not hiring additional nursing staff. We schedule people around to make things work so hopefully we can manage it this way," says Skadan.While not every school will have the ability to test students for COVID this next school year, the National Association for School Nurses expects more students will be tested. Combe refers to a recent conversation she had with a teacher."I said, ‘So what are you going to do if a child in your classroom starts coughing?’ Normally you would send that child to get some water or you know help them manage that. She said, ‘I’m sending that child to the school nurse,'" says Combe.Combe says nurses focus much of their time on health education for students, faculty and their entire school community, a role that will be amplified come next school year. 3334

(KGTV) - A Central California teacher, who also serves as a reserve police officer, was placed on administrative leave after accidentally firing his gun inside a classroom.Seaside High School instructor Dennis Alexander was teaching a public safety course for an Administration of Justice class when his gun went off, according to KSBW."Alexander was believed to have been providing instruction related to public safety awareness," Seaside Police told the station.One student suffered non-major injuries and was taken to the hospital. According to the school district, Alexander was pointing his gun toward the ceiling when it went off.Alexander was also placed on administrative leave at the Sand City Police Department, KSBW reported."I have concerns about why he was displaying a loaded firearm in a classroom. We will be looking into that. My first concern was that no one was hurt," Sand City Police Chief Brian Ferrante told KSBW. 970

(KGTV) - New upgrades at the Health Occupations Center are allowing students in the medical fields to continue their hands-on training during the Coronavirus Pandemic."These students can't go do clinicals in a hospital like they used to be able to," says Barry Jantz, the CEO of the Grossmont Healthcare District. "So it's even more important that we've got these kinds of abilities and facilities for students to train."Thanks to a bond passed by the voters, and a 0,000 grant from the Grossmont Healthcare District, the HOC recently finished construction on two state-of-the-art classroom and lab buildings. They also bought new, life-like mannequins and an ambulance simulator."It's very realistic," says Nursing Student Nyna Huynh. "Everything we do, from the pulses to listening to the breathing sounds, it's very realistic to what we'd come encounter in a clinical, a real situation.""It's an environment to make mistakes without harming the patient," says fellow student Deanne Murray. "We get to see a lot of things and see how situations can pan out. So it's a safe environment."The HOC also made several changes to make sure their students learn in a safe environment. All theory classes have moved online, and in-person labs are restricted to just a few students at a time. The new buildings also have touchless sinks and hand sanitizer stations.Like all schools in San Diego County, the HOC shut down in March at the start of the Pandemic. But, since the need for healthcare workers rose as the virus spread, they worked with County Health Officials to get special permission to resume classes. 288 students went back to class in June to finish the spring semester. This fall, a record of 455 students enrolled."There's fulfillment for them," says HOC Director Heather Peterson. "They're able to not only help immediately in this pandemic situation, but they really are part of a field where the labor market needs are immense."A majority of the new students were left unemployed by the Coronavirus. This new technology and in-person learning can help them find a new job in just one semester.Training new healthcare employees is vital, and not just because of the Pandemic. The US Department of Labor says demand for healthcare workers will increase by 23% between 2016 and 2026."People have lost jobs, and maybe this is a tremendous opportunity and time for them to go get some training they always thought about.
