SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local non-profit organization named "Promises2Kids" is helping children who are in San Diego's foster care system receive some of the structure and support that may be lacking due to the challenges of their home life."Having extra support and some stability is something I'm really grateful for because there's been so many times in my life when that's been absent," said Tiffani Hamilton, who has participated in the program for several years.Promises2Kids provides economic, educational, and emotional assistance, from purchasing school supplies and other items, to tutoring, to helping teenage children prepare and go through the college application process. They also provide mentors, who often form lifelong relationships with the students they guide.Hamilton's story is not unusual. She and her five siblings were raised by a single mother, who struggled with addiction and abusive relationships until her death. Hamilton was separated from her siblings when she entered the foster care system, bouncing from home to home. She credits Promises2Kids for helping give her the assistance and support she needed to achieve her goal of going to college."It's given me an experience that I never thought I would have. It's definitely shaped me into who I'm becoming. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man was arrested Monday morning on suspicion of breaking into a Pacific Beach home and sexually assaulting a sleeping woman earlier in the month, San Diego Police said.Jeffrey Hanze, also known as Jeffrey Hanre, was taken into custody in Los Angeles County by sheriff’s deputies at 3:45 a.m. No details about the arrest were released.Hanze entered a home in Pacific Beach through an open window about 2 a.m. the morning of October 1, San Diego Police said. RELATED: Police release photo of Pacific Beach sexual assault suspectInvestigators said Hanze sexually assaulted the woman who was sleeping, but left when she woke up.Hanze was considered armed and dangerous at the time of his arrest.10News checked Hanze's criminal background and found he has at least two felonies out of San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A New York-based pastor who was placed on a government watchlist after traveling to Tijuana to work with migrants is suing the federal government. Kaji Dousa is the senior pastor at Park Avenue Christian Church in New York and a member of the New Sanctuary Coalition, which works with immigrant communities.She had also been the senior pastor at the Table United Church of Christ in La Mesa for several years until 2016.According to a federal complaint, in November, Dousa started traveling to Tijuana as migrants from caravans continued filling the churches and shelters of the border city.“What I do is I go and meet and pray with people. I listen to them. I offer all the gifts of pastoral office,” said Dousa.She traveled multiple times across the border until January, when she was stopped by border agents and taken into a secondary screening area.According to the complaint, a Customs and Border Protection officer interrogated her, at one point asking “about Pastor Dousa’s assistance to asylum seekers and whether she encouraged them to lie in asylum applications.”Dousa denied the claims, but explained “that sometimes during her ministry she assisted asylum seekers, many of whom speak no English, in explaining what caused them to flee their homes,” according to the complaint. 1316

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A pursuit sparked an officer-involved shooting in Imperial Beach late Saturday night. According to police, officers tried to pull over a Ford F-150 that was reported stolen around 10:30 p.m. Saturday on the 1900 block of Dairy Mart Road. Police say the driver didn’t stop, instead driving into a cul-de-sac, making a u-turn and driving toward officers. “Believing his partner was going to be run over, one officer fired his service weapon to defend the other officer,” police said in a news release. At some point during the pursuit, the suspect threw a handgun out of the truck. The woman has since been located while police continue to search for the suspect. Homicide detectives have been called to investigate due to an officer firing his weapon, police say. It’s unclear whether or not the suspect was hit. Police say the officer who fired at the suspect is a three-year veteran of the department. No officers were injured. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new cancer screening method is promising to eliminate the need for painful biopsies and greatly reduce the cost of the procedure.It's part of a line of research known as liquid biopsy and the latest advancement is being ramped up for mass production by an entrepreneurial couple in Torrey Pines at the research firm, BioFluidica.  Among billions of blood cells, the company has developed a chip capable of finding a single abnormal cell afflicted with cancer or other diseases."It is probably the most sophisticated injection molding piece in this world," said molecular biologist Rolf Muller, as he holds up a thin, plastic chip about two inches square.First developed by researchers in North Carolina, the chip is injected with a small blood sample which can contain billions of individual cells. The blood passes through 150 tiny tunnels within the chip which are coated with antibodies. Those antibodies do their natural work of isolating the abnormal cells.Researchers can then identify them for any possible threat and treatment.The Mullers say the screenings have the potential to dramatically increase survival rates for cancer patients. And to eliminate the need for the often painful biopsies currently in use.They also envision the test becoming a normal part of standard blood screenings. The chip is currently in clinical trials.
