(AP) — A Southern California police department says three middle school students have been arrested after attempting to free another student from custody.The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported Saturday that a 15-year-old Tahquitz High student arrived at Rancho Viejo Middle School Friday and argued with a school employee.Hemet police says the high school girl was arrested on suspicion of threatening a public employee after a campus police officer attempted to speak with her.Authorities say three other minors attempted to stop the officer from arresting the girl by blocking the patrol car door and trying to punch the officer.Authorities say the officer called for backup and the girl, two 13-year-old boys and a 14-year-old boy were arrested.School officials say the students should expect to face disciplinary action from the district. 869

(AP) — An attorney and immigrant rights activist is the first person living in the U.S. illegally to be named to a statewide appointment in the nation's most populous state, California's Senate leader announced Wednesday.The Senate Rules Committee appointed Lizbeth Mateo to be an adviser on college access and financial aid. Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon framed the decision as a rebuke of Republican President Donald Trump's immigration policies.As a member of the Student Opportunity and Access Program Project Grant Advisory Committee, Mateo will advise the California Student Aid Commission to help low-income and marginalized people attend college. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A new California bill would require some retailers to have gender neutral floor space inside their stores, Politico reports. The bill, called Assembly Bill 2826, was introduced by Assemblymember Evan Low, a Democrat from Campbell. According to Politico, retailers would be able to sell the same products, as long as they dedicate space where customers can find clothes and toys regardless of whether the items have been marketed to boys or girls. “Keeping similar items that are traditionally marketed either for girls or for boys separated makes it more difficult for the consumer to compare the products and incorrectly implies that their use by one gender is inappropriate,” the bill states. Ronald “Khalis” Bell, a co-founder and singer of the group Kool & the Gang, has died. He was 68. Publicist Sujata Murthy says Bell died Wednesday morning at his home in the U.S. Virgin Islands with his wife by his side. The cause of death has not been released. Kool & the Gang grew from jazz roots in the 1960s to become one of the major groups of the 1970s, blending jazz, funk, R&B and pop. After a brief downturn, the group enjoyed a return to stardom in the ’80s. The group won a Grammy in 1978 for their work on the soundtrack for “Saturday Night Fever.”In addition to vocals, Bell also played the sax for the band. (AP) — Officials say California's unemployment rate fell to a new record low of 4% in September.The state Employment Development Department said Friday that employers added 21,300 nonfarm payroll jobs. That extended California's record job expansion to 115 months.The unemployment rate in August was 4.1%, matching the previous record low first set in 2018.The state's current period of job expansion tied the 1960s' expansion when it reached 113 months.California has gained 3,348,900 jobs since the expansion began in February 2010. 561
