as more patients claim their implants are making them sick, a WFTS review found. Breast augmentation is still America’s most popular plastic surgery and more than 300,000 U.S. patients had the procedure last year alone.But explant procedures, the surgery to remove implants, are also on the rise.In 2008, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported 20,967 women had implants removed. A decade later, that number increased by more than 8,000.“It came as a shock to me — being a plastic surgeon — to see the amount of women coming to my practice with the multitude of symptoms, and thinking it might be their breast implants,” said Dr. Dave Rankin of Aqua Plastic Surgery in Jupiter, Florida.After 15 years in the business, Rankin said he now sees more demand for explant surgeries than implants and told WFTS he performed at least 400 explants last year.Many explant patients are reporting being sickened by so-called "breast implant illness." Reported symptoms include headaches, rashes, chronic fatigue, fevers, brain fog and joint pain. But the illness is not officially recognized by doctors or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.“I was a skeptic at the beginning and then I became a believer,” Rankin said. “The best candidate in my practice are patients that are very, very sick. They’ve tried everything else. They’ve been to a million different doctors, done hundreds of blood tests. Nothing comes back and this is, ‘OK well let’s try (removing the implants)’ and, fortunately, many of those patients do get better.”But even Rankin isn’t exactly sure what’s causing this mysterious illness.“Additional research and study is absolutely necessary,” he said.Unexplained symptoms started after implant surgeryLeara Marshall said she doesn’t need a study to know she felt better after having her implants removed.Marshall said she wanted to improve her self-esteem when she got implants in 2002 and said she knew something was wrong as soon as she woke from surgery.“I was already getting symptoms because they were hardened and painful within the first six months,” Marshall said.She said her unexplained symptoms — headaches, migraines, inflammation and heart palpitations — continued for 17 years.That’s when Marshall said she found thousands of women on social media reporting similar symptoms.WFTS heard from dozens of women across Florida describing similar accounts. More women say implants made them sick “I had food sensitivities, alcohol intolerance. I developed hyperparathyroidism,” Lissa Boyer said. Boyer described how she had little energy, pain and struggled to take care of her two young children who she said asked her, “When are you going to stop being sick?”Haley Miller said she was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and even multiple sclerosis after she temporarily went blind as doctors struggled to explain her symptoms. She said a multiple sclerosis specialist finally brought up the prospect her breast implants could be the cause. “I wanted to immediately go home and get a knife and take them out because I was just like, ‘Wow, this is my root cause. This is why I’m not well,’ ” Miller said. Malissa Sheridan said she suffered chronic fatigue but didn’t suspect her implants were the cause. “I had gone to several doctors trying to find out what’s wrong with me, why am I this way and I would ask ‘Is it my implants?’ and they would say, ‘No,’ ” Sheridan said. Roni Earnest said she experienced fatigue, headaches, rashes and even an unexplained heart attack after having implants for decades before she decided to have them removed.“The minute I had my surgery, I’m telling you, I was healed,” Earnest said.FDA issues warningThe FDA says there’s no scientific evidence supporting breast implant illness but issued a warning in May that some experience “systemic symptoms” that may go away “when their breast implants are removed.” 3895

Republican Jimmy Sengenberger says while climate change may not be a priority for the Republican Party, he’s personally noticed an increasing number of Republicans caring about the issue. “It’s more among the younger crop of Republicans, but I think that when I talk to a lot of older folks on the Republican side, they’re also recognizing that it’s an issue that conservatives and Republicans cannot and should not just ignore,” Sengenberger said.So, where did this misconception about climate come from? And why have people considered it a highly-politized issue? Boven says it’s hard to know for sure, but he believes it’s likely come from political leaders.“And so, we had this environment where Democratic and Republican leaders became very divided in their discourse on climate change, and that caused ordinary Democrats and Republicans to believe there was this sharp division between other ordinary Democrats and Republicans,” Boven said.In actuality, Boven says he’s found most people don’t want such a large divide between parties.“Most Americans, they value bipartisanship. They value thinking open mindedly about ideas from the other side.”The independent, Democrat and Republican in this story all agree it’s important to take care of our planet and the people on it.“My personal philosophy is that the earth and the environment are a gift to us, and that we’re charged to take care of it,” independent Mason said.“When I look at my youngest granddaughter, my heart just aches because I don’t know what’s in her future,” Democrat Dike said.“I don’t think there’s any American that wants to destroy the environment or destroy the world climate. We’re all together in the idea that we should protect the environment. It’s more how you go about it I think than anything else,” Republican Sengenberger said.“I would say that climate change has become a bipartisan issue, yes. How the Program WorksThe Indiana Choice Scholarship Program provides state money to offset tuition costs at schools across Indiana. To qualify, students must live in Indiana and be ages 5-22. There are then eight different options, or "tracks" a student can qualified for, depending on various measurements. For example, there is a sibling track, meaning a student's brother or sister received a scholarship the previous year.A family's income level is also a factor when determining who gets the scholarship money. But the specific school is responsible for determining eligibility. The amount the student receives to attend the school is based on a state-created funding formula, but it could be as much as the school's tuition and fees.The money technically goes to each student's family, but it's tied to a specific school. If the student stops going to that school, they can't use the scholarship money at a different school. The schools participating in the program may not discriminate against a student based on race, color or national origin.Cathedral, Brebeuf Jesuit and RoncalliA few days before Cathedral's announcement, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School was faced with the same option — fire its teacher in a same-sex marriage or lose its Catholic classification. Brebeuf Jesuit chose the latter."We really just tried to look at it in terms of our community," Brebeuf Jesuit principal Greg VanSlambrook said. "Our decision trying to do the right thing by our teacher and by our community."After the school's decision, it can no longer use the name "Catholic," and will no longer be identified or recognized as a Catholic institution.Both Cathedral and Brebeuf Jesuit are in the Indiana Choice Scholarship Program, meaning they get money from the state to accept the lower-income students.Over the last three school years, Cathedral has received ,457,077.31 in scholarship vouchers from the state, according to data provided by the Indiana Department of Education. Over that same timeframe, Brebeuf Jesuit has received ,137,056.03 in scholarship vouchers.Last year, Roncalli High School placed its guidance counselor on administrative leave after it was discovered she was in a same-sex marriage.Backlash from State LawmakersThere is no mechanism in place to stop Cathedral from receiving public money. Two Democratic Indianapolis state lawmakers, one in each chamber, tried during the last session. Rep. Dan Forestal and Sen. J.D. Ford have pushed to include language in state law that would prevent voucher money from going to schools that discriminate against a staff member based on their sexuality, gender identity, race and many other factors.In Ford's bill, schools in the program would have to annually submit copies of teachers' contracts or other documentation, to prove they're not discriminating. His bill died without getting a hearing. Ford said he was told it was a busy session and the bill didn't meet the priorities of the Committee on Education and Career Development."People are talking about it," Ford said. "My constituents are talking about it, which means I have to talk about it."Both lawmakers have a personal stake in what's happened with these Indianapolis schools. Forestal is a Roncalli alumnus and Ford is the first openly LGBTQ state lawmaker."I think I have a duty to speak up on behalf of the folks this is happening to," Ford said.He also introduced an amendment into the state budget, to essentially do the same as the bill would've. But the amendment was defeated. Ford also said schools that don't receive public money can do what they want, but things change when state funding gets involved."If you are going to do that, that's fine, I'm still going to have an issue with it," Ford said. "It just wouldn't be in my purview as a state legislator.
