DENVER, Colorado — When the Boy Scouts announced it was going to start accepting girls, it got a lot of people talking. Now, girls are starting to join the dens.The Now, a television show of the E.W. Scripps Company, talked with one of the first to sign up about why she's doing it, and her message to other girls.When it comes to a boy scout meeting, you'd expect it to start with the Pledge of Allegiance. But what you might not expect is to see girls reciting the pledge, with the boys.A meeting just outside Denver, Colorado is one of the first meetings since girls have been welcomed to join Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.Girls across the country can join Cub Scouts in August. But 8-year-old Caroline Graham is one of the first as a part of their early adopter program. And for her, it's not just about getting to participate in scout traditions. But getting to do more of what she loves; camping."You get to be outdoors," Graham said. "And you get to make way more friends."Until now, her dad would bring her along on some trips with her brothers, but as a girl scout, she often had to stay behind."I really wanted to go cause my brothers got to go," Graham said. "And now I actually can.""Every time we'd pull out of the driveway on her way to a camping trip her last though was, can I go?" Caroline's dad and den leader Andrew Graham said. "And we'd say not this time. But now that's gone."Andrew Graham says he's glad his daughter will be able to have the same opportunities as his sons."We're not trying to turn them into boys by no stretch of the imagination," said Andrew Graham. "We want them to just turn into the same leaders we're developing our boys to turn into. And this give us that opportunity."Caroline Graham's brother Oliver says it's about time."It's 2018 and you shouldn't be so sexist," Oliver Graham said.Charlie Graham just glad they can all do things together."I feel like as a family now we can just sort of all progress up together sort of compete against each other for ranks and stuff," Charlie Graham said. "Whereas just before it was just all the boys."But Elliot Graham's feelings are a bit different."I'm scared," Elliot Graham said. "I'm scared they're going to beat us."Yes, the boys will face some new competition in popcorn sales and in the pinewood derby. But from the looks of the meeting, none of that seems to matter.And what Caroline Graham hopes can come from this?"Other girls will decide they want to start this," Caroline Graham said. DEL MAR (KGTV) - The Annual Pacific Classic Party celebrated heroes in the horse community who risked their lives to rescue thoroughbreds during the Lilac Fire."I want everybody who was at San Luis Ray that day to understand they were all heroes," Horse Trainer and Owner Kimberly Marrs said. She's owned horses as long as she can remember, and loves them with all her heart.Friday night, a jazz-infused, Hor d'oeuvres laden party at L'Auberge, the honorees transported attendees to smoke and flame-filled, frantic memories."His pen was on fire because he was in sawdust, literally drug him out of the pen," Marrs said, adding that on that day she lept inside and dragged the horse out, leading him and others along the way to the infield with another worker. They were almost to the end of the tunnel when, "next thing we're facing is a 50-head herd of horses, coming straight at us. So all we could do is basically plaster ourselves against the wall and close our eyes and pray we didn't get hit because if we got hit, we would've been knocked down and trampled to death."She made it unscathed and headed back for her barn where she knew another horse was waiting. When she returned, she faced devastation."I'm still looking for a hose to try and put him out, like I can save him. I tried to get in my barn, but it was so hot, I was stepping over flames," she said. Marrs knew he was already dead. She described it as a horrible, guilt-filled moment. DENVER — "Game of Thrones" fans who wanted to own something like the near-mythical "Dire Wolves" on the series are now abandoning Huskies in record numbers."People have actually asked me if we have any Dire Wolves. That doesn't exist." said Maren Gibson with the Arctic Breeds Rescue, which rescues Huskies, Malamutes and other northern breeds in Utah and Colorado. "They have no real knowledge of the breed."Now, many of those dogs are being found on the street or abandoned in shelters."We've said amongst ourselves, 'What is going on with all these lost Huskies?'" said Stephanie Weber, who helps run the Facebook group Lost and Found Dogs of Colorado. Weber said they have recently seen a surge in found Huskies that no one is looking for."So, it seems sort of like maybe they are not just getting loose," said Weber. "Maybe someone is turning them loose, getting rid of them." At the Dumb Friends League Shelter in Aurora, there has also been a significant increase in the number of Huskies and Malamutes. The shelter has seen a 25 percent increase in the last fiscal year, compared to only a 2.5 percent increase the year before.Some are strays, but almost half of them have been surrendered by their owners."The reasons people are giving when they are surrendering the dogs are time and space, which means they don't have enough time for the dog, they don't have enough space for the dog," said Maia Brusseau, a spokeswoman with the Dumb Friends League. "If you want to adopt this type of dog, you need to make sure it's right for your lifestyle."The high-energy breed can be a challenge for many owners."Northern breeds are difficult," said Weber, who is fostering a Husky mix. "They're stubborn. They're runners. They're escape artists, They're chewers. They're very vocal. They have high energy and need a lot of exercise. They're great dogs if you're willing to make your life fit around them."Weber said too many people choose pets as an extension of the favorite show or movie and not based on what is the best fit for their family."When '101 Dalmatians' came out, everyone wanted a Dalmatian. It happens with every trend like that. but 15 years is a long time to live with not the right dog," said Weber.She recommends volunteering at a wolf rescue if you want to see something like a Dire Wolf or fostering the breed before you decide to adopt. 2427
