Three members of a white supremacist group were sentenced to prison Friday for kicking, choking and punching multiple people during the 2017 "United the Right" rally in Charlottesville and other rallies in California.Benjamin Daley, 26, was sentenced to 37 months in prison; 25-year-old Thomas Gillen was sentenced to 33 months; and Michael Miselis, 30, was sentenced to 27 months, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Virginia said in statement. The three were members of the California-based militant white supremacist organization "Rise Above Movement." The group no longer exists, according to the attorney's office.A fourth defendant, Cole Evan White, will be sentenced at a later date, the attorney's office said."These defendants, motivated by hateful ideology, incited and committed acts of violence in Charlottesville, as well at other purported political rallies in California," U.S. Attorney Thomas T. Cullen said."They were not interested in peaceful protest or lawful First Amendment expression; instead, they intended to provoke and engage in street battles with those that they perceived as their enemies."The three men sentenced attended two rallies in California prior to the August 2017 Charlottesville rally, during one which Daley and Miselis assaulted protesters, according to the attorney's office. In August 2017, the three men were in the crowd when violence erupted on the University of Virginia campus and Daley punched multiple people, the office said. The next day, "RAM members collectively pushed, punched, kicked, chocked, head-butted, and otherwise assaulted several individuals, resulting in a riot," the office said. They were among the most violent"The sentences imposed today demonstrate the U.S. Government's intolerance of the use of violence, by anyone, to infringe upon the right of others to assemble peacefully," Special Agent in Charge David W. Archey of the FBI said Friday.A criminal complaint filed in October accused the four men of traveling from California to Charlottesville for the rally "with intent (a) to incite a riot, (b) to organize, promote, encourage, participate in, and carry on in a riot, (c) as having 'participated in violent encounters in Charlottesville.'"The complaint called the men "among the most violent individuals" at the Charlottesville rally.Photo and video footage in the complaint showed White apparently head-butting a man in a clerical collar and a female counterprotester. The woman suffered a severe laceration.Gillen, Daley and Miselis are shown assaulting multiple counterprotesters, the complaint said. In other photos, some of the men are seen apparently kicking and slamming counterprotesters to the ground. 2719

There are so many options when a person goes into a supplement store, from vitamins to minerals and protein powders and more. The latest one to grow in popularity? Collagen. At Supplement Giant, owner Adam Watts says collagen powder is a popular product.“Collagen is actually the most abundant amount of protein in our body,” Watts said.Collagen represents 30 percent of a human body’s protein content.“It’s found in animal bones ligaments and tendons again not traditionally part of our diet anymore,” he said. Most brands sell collagen as a great supplement to take to improve a person’s hair, skin, fingernails, and bone and joint health.“If you have a deficiency of collagen in your skin it can decrease you skin health which can cause stretch marks, dark spots, infections,” Watts said.He suggests people age 30 and older take a collagen supplement.“After the age of 30, collagen decreases by 1 percent, so by the time you're 50, you've lost 20 percent of your collagen,” he said. "If you have injuries, collagen is going to help and repair tissue." Registered Dietician Jessica Crandall Snyder said she recommends food as medicine, not supplements."Being active on a daily basis you are actually helping to re-synthesize your collagen," she said, "So supplemental sources from protein powders may not be the way for you to get adequate nutrition."While Adam Watts sells collagen powder at whole sale, other stores start the product at per container. But eggs, wild salmon, tomatoes, pumpkin and chia seeds are affordable foods that aid in collagen production. The experts say collagen powder works, but make sure it’s not your main source of protein. 1668

The San Francisco Police Department said on Tuesday that investigators now suspect a freelance journalist who had refused to reveal the identity of a confidential source took part in a conspiracy to steal a police report on the death of a public defender.Police Chief Bill Scott said at a press conference that there is a criminal investigation into whether that journalist, Bryan Carmody, was an "active participant in the commission of the criminal acts beyond his role with the news media.""Mr. Carmody was and continues to be viewed by investigators as a possible co-conspirator in this theft rather than a passive recipient of the stolen document," Scott said. He did not cite any evidence of Carmody's role in the alleged theft at the press conference.Scott made the statement after police officials said in court earlier in the day that Carmody will get all of his property back after it was seized in a raid on May 10.Press advocacy groups, including the Committee to Protect Journalists, released statements at the time condemning the raid. The Society of Professional Journalists Northern California chapter invoked the law designed to provide legal cover for journalists who want to protect the identity of an unnamed source."California's Shield Law protects journalists from being held in contempt for refusing to disclose their sources' identities and other unpublished/unaired information obtained during the news gathering process," SPJ NorCal said. "That this search was carried out weeks after Carmody declined a request from San Francisco police to divulge his sources shows an alarming disregard for the right to gather and report on information."The northern California-based freelance journalist 1729

The threat of record flooding has areas of the central United States on alert after more than a week of extreme weather that has brought with it tornadoes, fierce winds and heavy rains.Spring storms have resulted in five deaths in Missouri, one in Iowa and six in Oklahoma. In Indiana, a 4-year-old boy is missing after strong currents from heavy rains swept him away.CNN Meteorologist Robert Shackelford said 3.6 million people were under a flash flood watch, and 1.3 million under a severe thunderstorm watch overnight Sunday, with nearly 50 million at risk of severe weather impacts on Monday."Severe thunderstorms are continuing along the central High Plains, bringing damaging winds and the possibility for a few tornadoes, but these systems will weaken throughout the night," he said.Shackelford said the Arkansas River is experiencing record flooding, with one site at Van Buren already over 38 feet -- the record set in 1945 -- and an expected crest at 42.5 feet late Tuesday into early Wednesday.Tulsa levees under strain, record flooding expectedOklahoma and other parts of the Midwest are still reeling from a deadly spring storm system that has resulted in more than 170 reported tornadoes plus strong winds, flash flooding and hail.In Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Army Corps of Engineers said it was increasing the release of water at Keystone Dam to 265,000 cubic feet per second (CFS) Sunday evening and to 275,000 CFS Monday morning "with the expectation to leave it at this level through Thursday.""Due to the additional release at Keystone Dam, flood water is expected to rise and residents and businesses along the Arkansas River must remain vigilant and take precautions based on the new data available," 1728

The tipping equation is more complicated than ever."It can be really confusing, especially going from Panera to coffee shops to a restaurant," Rachel Bahner, a shopper on the Plaza, said, "Where do you draw the line of not to tip and when to tip?"There's also the dilemma of how much to give."If they take tips, I'll do 20 percent," Tiana Griffin, another Plaza patron, said.USA Today 397
