China's consumer price index is expected to rise about 3.3 percent in 2007, moving above the government target of three percent, the State Information Centre said on Wednesday. The forecast came after China's consumer price index (CPI) hit a 27-month-high of 3.4 percent in May, driven by an 8.3 percent rise in food prices, from 3.0 percent in April and 3.3 percent in March. "Consumer inflation in 2007 is to be pushed up by food price increases, and food price increases are the result of a surge in meat, poultry and egg prices," the think-tank said in a report published on the China Securities Journal. The centre is a research body under the China National Development and Reform Commission, China's top planning agency. The report said the rise in meat and other foods would not slow considerably until the last quarter of this year because of high grain and cereal prices. But it did not provide any forecast on policy moves. A surge last month in the price of pork, a staple meat on Chinese dinner tables, raised concerns about inflation. After the May inflation data was released last week, Premier Wen Jiabao said the government was prepared to tighten policy further to restrain the economy and inflation. Various ministries also scrambled to respond in an effort to ease public worries about inflation. The Ministry of Commerce said pork prices in major Chinese cities had dropped slightly in the first 10 days of June. But according to the report, meat and egg prices could rise even further in coming weeks, following a 26.5 percent surge in meat prices in May. Besides food, inflation pressures are under control, the report said. Prices of industrial products are unlikely to rise significantly, and labour cost increases in China have yet to be reflected in consumer inflation. It said the pace of inflation in 2007, although it is exceeding Beijing's target, is still within a range the government can control. Monetary tightening and yuan appreciation in China are expected to have some cooling effects on inflation.

"But experts said with a length of 50 centimeters, a cat would have grown tooth bones. This skeleton hasn't (teeth), it's like a cub feline.""The experts said there is a great probability that it belongs to a South China tiger cub."He said the footprints found in Zhenping County ranged from 12 to 16 cm, with toes. "To my experience in investigating the wild, they are tiger footprints. They belong to more than one tiger."Zhang said the experts had also developed rubbings of the footprints for further analysis.In October, a farmer in Zhenping County, in the northern Shaanxi Province, claimed he snapped photos of a tiger in the forest near his home. The provincial forestry bureau later cited experts as verifying it was a South China tiger. The subspecies was believed to have been extinct in the wild for more than three decades.However, many scientists and Internet users have denounced the pictures as fake. In November, one netizen posted an on-line picture of a tiger from a new year calendar and claimed the two tigers were identical.Despite this, the provincial forestry department insisted the tiger in the photo existed in Zhenping County. The Beijing-based China Photographers Society, however, confirmed the images were not real.Last month, the State Forestry Administration dispatched an expert panel to Zhenping to carry out a field investigation. The government is to increase the level of pensions and housing subsidies for poor families in a bid to bridge the widening income gap. A State Council meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday pledged to increase pensions for more than 40 million retirees from State-owned enterprises over the next three years. The government has already raised their pensions in the past three years by an average of 8 percent a year. But the cabinet considers the present pension level "still quite low". It said the increases over the next three years would exceed the rises made between 2005 and 2007 to "further ease social tensions caused by the income gap". The move is aimed at helping retired senior technology professionals and those who now get a relatively low pension. The cabinet ordered local governments to make sure this year's pensions are paid by the end of the month. While pledging to regularize pension increases, the cabinet also called for the development of other forms of pension rather than solely relying on the budget. It mentioned commercial and enterprise-funded insurance schemes. The average pension of enterprise employees is about 750 yuan (0) per month - the minimum salary set for developed cities, including Beijing. "With my pension, I can just about make ends meet. Consumer prices have kept on rising in the first half of this year," a 72-year-old retiree said. The cabinet also endorsed a plan to provide affordable housing to urban low-income groups. The policy aims to provide rent subsidies or low-rent housing for those who cannot afford commercial housing in the cities. By pledging to set aside more funding and land for the construction and acquisition of such housing, the government hopes to provide low-rent housing for all low-income urban residents - not just the poorest - by the end of 2010. The government aims to achieve this goal through multi-channels - construction, purchases, renovation and donations. Fifty-two workers were trapped early Sunday when a torrent of mud and water engulfed a rail tunnel under construction in central China. Rescue teams managed to free 35 of the workers building the tunnel in Hubei province and the remaining 17 trapped about 200 metres (660 feet) below ground would soon be freed, the Xinhua New Agency added.
