Just when it seemed like the fury surrounding the chaplain?for the US House of Representatives was over.As House members were wrapping up votes Tuesday night, a remarkably heated exchange erupted on the floor, with one congressman shouting, aggressively pointing his finger, and -- at one point -- banging his fist on a table as he sharply criticized another member.Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley of New York attempted to offer a resolution to form a committee to investigate the forced resignation of the Rev. Pat Conroy, the House chaplain. Crowley, a Catholic, made a similar motion last month?after questions arose over the resignation. As his resolution was in the process of being tabled due to GOP opposition on Tuesday, Republican Rep. Tom MacArthur of New Jersey walked over to Crowley on the Democratic side of the House floor and accused him of "politicizing" the chaplain controversy."I just walked up afterward and said 'Joe.' He turned. I said, 'You need to let go of this,'" MacArthur later told reporters. After a few more words were exchanged, Crowley, a towering 6'5'' figure whose face turned red with anger, grew visibly upset and could be heard from across the room shouting that he was "offended" by the chaplain incident."I'm not the one politicizing this," Crowley yelled, loud enough to be overheard by a handful of reporters sitting in the press gallery above the House floor."The speaker is politicizing this," he shouted, a reference to House Speaker Paul Ryan's office having requested Conroy resign in the first place.Recalling the incident, MacArthur said that Crowley "ordered" him to go back to the Republican side of the floor, to which MacArthur objected."In New Jersey, we don't back down from people," MacArthur said. "This is a guy who wants to be speaker and he's so thin-skinned that he can't take criticism from another member of Congress? I think that speaks for itself."Things appeared to calm down quickly and Crowley could be seen laughing and joking around with colleagues soon after. Crowley, who's widely seen as friendly and mild-mannered among Democrats, was not available for comment. His spokeswoman acknowledged that the two men got into a heated conversation but argued there was no escalation.Earlier Thursday, the House chaplain was re-appointed to his position?so that he could remain chaplain after he rescinded his resignation last week and it was accepted by Ryan. Tensions have run high as members of parties questioned why Ryan requested the chaplain to resign last month. Following the outcry, Conroy rescinded his resignation and accused Ryan's chief of staff of suggesting to him "maybe it's time that we had a Chaplain that wasn't a Catholic" -- an allegation Ryan's chief of staff denied.Ryan accepted Conroy's decision to stay and said Tuesday morning -- before the evening's heated exchange -- that he had confidence the chamber could move past the issue."We talked about how to improve the services going forward," Ryan said during his weekly news conference. "We're going to keep talking. I think we can ultimately make improvements so that everybody has access to the pastoral services they're looking for." 3208

KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Jeff Henry, one of the men charged in the death of 10-year-old Caleb Schwab at Schlitterbahn water park, did not appear with his attorney in court Thursday, Dec. 13.His attorney stated Henry is at an inpatient facility in Houston, Texas. He asked the judge to stay his bench warrant until Jan. 24, 2019 when Henry returns for his other case. The attorney said Henry, a co-owner of Schlitterbahn, will begin an intensive outpatient program while in Houston. Henry is accused of allegedly arranging for a human trafficker to bring a woman to him at a hotel room in July 2018, a day after he was in court for the Schlitterbahn case.Part of the payment to the trafficker included passes to the water park, documents say.The state told the judge they were fine with the suggestion from Henry's attorney to stay his bench warrant since they have been in touch with authorities there and they say they have had no issues with Henry.Henry has a ,000 cash and surety bond and is under house arrest.Schwab died Aug. 6, 2016 from a neck injury sustained while he was on the 17-story Verrückt water slide with two other park goers. The boy collided with the overhead netting and metal hoops after coming out of his raft, according to court documents.Schlitterbahn is located in Kansas City, Kansas. The ride has since been removed. 1368

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As people follow COVID-19 guidance from experts and avoid large gatherings, the holidays will look a lot different this year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended people not travel this holiday season and to celebrate with the people in their household. It's not unusual to feel down or have a case of the "blues" this time of year, and the pandemic restrictions could add to anxiety or stress. However, experts say there are things people can do to make their days if not merry, at least a little brighter.Vladimir Sainte is a licensed clinical social worker with Truman Medical Center Behavioral Health. He says the best thing people can do is be honest with themselves and acknowledge they miss the holiday traditions."There is power in awareness and this can help us pivot, to shift our thoughts so we are not lingering in self-defeating thoughts," Sainte said. When people were asked what traditions they would miss most, some of the answers included going to church, going to the Nutcracker Ballet, and attending the plaza lighting ceremony among other things. However, the most consistent response was spending time with family and loved ones.Sainte says these are sentiments he's hearing from the patients he serves."Obviously the holidays are always a hard time for people because of loss and not being with specific loved ones. So, I feel as if it’s been magnetized because of the safety parameters," he adds.According to Sainte, acknowledging your feelings is just the first step. He suggests coming up with new traditions or putting a twist on your old favorites."Whether that is setting up a Zoom Christmas party or maybe sending out some holiday letters or emails there are things that we can do," Sainte said. "Change is hard, right? But, it’s not always bad. There are still ways to celebrate the season with your loved ones, even if you cannot engage in those favorite traditions."Finally, he says if you or someone you know is struggling day-to-day with the holiday blues, reach out for help. "I advocate to all of my clients, reach out to the back of your insurance card and call that number and ask if you have providers who fall within your network," he said. Some employers also offer an Employee Assistance Program that makes mental health professionals, and other services, available to employees at little or no cost. If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255.Sainte says these are some signs you can look at for if you feel like you're going through depression:Any major change in behaviorIf you're sleeping moreFeeling anxiousIrritabilityExperiencing night terrorsNot enjoying activities you normally wouldThis story originally reported by Caitlin Knute on KSHB.com. 2845

KENOSHA, Wis. – The city of Kenosha, Wisconsin, is taking stock of the damage left in the wake of unrest following the shooting of Jacob Blake. As President Donald Trump made his first visit to Kenosha since the shooting Tuesday, small businesses were beginning to tally up the losses.“You ain’t touching my dojo. That’s a fact,” taekwondo student Shelley Meyer said during a live-stream on Facebook as she stood guard outside her dojo.“I’m getting scared. I know I’m a military vet, but I am outnumbered here,” she said. That’s when a number of people confronted her.“They came across the street and then attacked the school,” said Meyer. She pleaded with the attackers before others stepped in.“Then another group of protesters surrounded me and built a human shield.”Today, the school is still standing.“She singlehandedly geared up and, you know, begged and pleaded in the face of people spitting and throwing stuff at her, protected our building,” said U.S. Taekwondo Academy owner Jon Kim. He says the damages are estimated in the tens of thousands. But down the block that night, another business was not so lucky.“The cars are just blowing up one by one,” Meyer said during her live stream.Like dominoes, the dealership’s cars detonated one tank at a time.Witnesses say the flames started in one car and quickly engulfed the entire lot. The owners estimate the losses in the millions. The inferno, which burned for hours, left more than 100 cars completely destroyed. For owners Sahil and Anmol Khindri, their American dream has turned into a nightmare.“We built this place up from the ground up. That office right there, as you can see, it's in ashes right now. It's done. It's gone,” said Anmol Khindri, co-owner of Car Source.Charred scraps, shattered glass and tires melted to the core are all that remain.“It's gonna cost us more money to remove this car off the lot than it's worth itself,” said Sahil Khindri.More than a week since the destruction, they’re still not sure how they will recover financially. A GoFundMe page has been set up. They’re hoping for some assistance though, it’s unclear whether their insurance will pay out at all.“We had nothing to do with it. And we were the ones who was getting penalized for this,” said Sahil Khindri. It’s a similar story up and down Kenosha’s business district.Boarded up storefronts are decorated with colorful messages of hope while masking the damage and loss.Back at the taekwondo academy, their judo coin symbol has been painted outside the boarded-up exterior. Kim says it’s a symbol of resilience."The more that we can rely on each other, hopefully, you know, as a community, we can stay protected." 2672
