Those looking to make a smaller carbon footprint when they eat out or order food have a new option. Panera announced this week they will label items on their menu that have a low impact on the climate as “Cool Food Meals.”Panera is partnering with the World Resources Institute to identify climate-friendly entrees, with a low impact on the climate. The company says about 55 percent of their entrees have the “Cool Food Meal” designation.“At Panera, we are passionate about keeping the customer at the heart of everything we do, and that includes giving our guests choices to lower their impact on climate change through the food they eat in our bakery-cafes,” said Niren Chaudhary, Chief Executive Officer, Panera Bread in a press release. “Understanding the impact of what we eat on the environment is one way we can all take a small step toward combating climate change.”The World Resources Institute says they recommend Americans try for 3.59 kg CO2e at breakfast, and about 5.38 kg CO2e for lunch or dinner. These benchmarks represent a roughly 38 percent decrease from current averages, which will help the country meet environmental standards established in the Paris Agreement on climate change. In general, plant-based foods have a lower impact on the environment than meat or daily products. However, it’s also about moderation. The WRI looks at entree ingredients to determine its carbon footprint accounting for emissions during the agricultural supply chains and land used to produce the meal. Some of the items that get the new designation include Panera’s broccoli cheddar soup, Fuji apple chicken salad, and Mediterranean bowl.Roughly 25 percent of greenhouse gas emissions are from agriculture and related deforestation, according to WRI. 1760

Three motorcyclists stopped traffic at a busy Mesa, Arizona intersection Sunday afternoon to help a woman cross the street. The three riders; Eduardo Plascenia, Patrick Patterson, and Damon Pruit, were passing through 8th Avenue and Alama School Road around 1 p.m when one of the riders noticed and signaled to the others that a woman was stuck and stranded in the middle of the crosswalk. "No one seemed to care," explained Eduardo Plascencia. "No one slowed down and no one offered assistance." Video captured from Patterson's helmet shows Patterson and Plascenia turn around and head back to the intersection where Pruit had already stopped. The riders used their bikes to stop traffic and assure that the woman would be able to cross safely. The video shows the woman give a friendly wave to the riders who drive off after the woman is safely across. "She thanked us adamantly. She waved at us and thanked us. She had stopped shaking and had extended her hand to Eduardo and Damon and I behind her," said Patterson.  1060

Thursday marks exactly six months since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health crisis connected with the disease that was then simply known as the novel coronavirus.Half a year later, the virus has infected 17 million people on every continent and killed more than 600,000 worldwide. On Jan. 31, WHO issued a statement saying that Dr. Tedros Adhanom, the director-general of the organization, had accepted a committee's recommendation to declare the outbreak of the virus in China a "public health emergency of international concern."At the time, the outbreak was mainly concentrated in China, as the country had confirmed 7,711 cases of the virus and 170 deaths linked to the disease. While the virus had been recorded in five other countries — including five cases in the U.S. — there had been no deaths recorded outside of China. In its Jan. 31 declarations, the WHO did not recommend any travel or trade restrictions, but urged countries to prepare for containment and "place emphasis on reducing human infection, prevention of secondary transmission and international spread."The organization issued its recommendation 10 days after China reported that the virus appeared to be spreading from person-to-person, a finding that indicated the disease could have far-reaching implications. The New York Times reports that by that time, thousands had traveled out of Wuhan, the virus' place of origin, possibly spreading it around the world. China has since faced criticism for not reporting its findings sooner. That same day, President Donald Trump took action to block entry into the U.S. of any person that had been in China for the last 14 days. The order did not apply to U.S. citizens. While the move may have temporarily delayed the virus' widespread arrival, his administration's inaction for the next month would prove costly.During the next month, the CDC would face significant delays in developing a test for COVID-19, which would cause a testing backup in the months to come. The president also repeatedly downplayed the severity of the situation, declaring on Feb. 26 that the number of cases in the U.S. would go down to zero in the coming days.In the months since the WHO's declaration, 150,000 Americans have died of COVID-19, and more than 4 million have been infected. Both figures are by far the most of any other country. 2370

There are many questions and few answers after President Donald Trump announced that he and first lady Melania Trump have tested positive for the coronavirus. One thing is for sure: The ripple effects from Trump’s diagnosis are extensive. The president said he and the first lady will isolate following their confirmed positive coronavirus test. That means Trump’s visit to Florida on Friday for a scheduled Make America Great Again rally is off. He was also scheduled for a roundtable with supporters in Washington on Friday. That is now canceled.Only one event now remains on Trump’s schedule for Friday: A phone call on COVID-19 support to vulnerable seniorsAlso, senior Trump aide Hope Hicks is isolating at home after she is confirmed to have the virus. It is unclear if other staffers who were in contact with Hicks and the president have also come down with the virus. Both Trump and Hicks were seen on Wednesday in Marine One in close contact with other staffers including Jared Kushner. With a now confirmed outbreak of the coronavirus inside the White House, a number of senior staffers, Secret Service agents, aides and others may be required to quarantine. How the White House will function with a president in isolation and senior staff in quarantine remains in question. But the president’s physician showed optimism that Trump can continue his duties as president.Dr. Sean Conley said, "Rest assured, I expect the President to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering and I will keep you updated on any future developments."The CDC says that for those with confirmed coronavirus cases, isolation is necessary for 10 to 20 days.“For most persons with COVID-19 illness, isolation and precautions can generally be discontinued 10 days after symptom onset and resolution of fever for at least 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing medications, and with improvement of other symptoms,” the CDC said. “A limited number of persons with severe illness may produce replication-competent virus beyond 10 days that may warrant extending duration of isolation and precautions for up to 20 days after symptom onset; consider consultation with infection control experts.”There are also questions on how this impacts Joe Biden’s campaign. Biden shared a stage with Trump on Tuesday, and senior staff of both candidates sat in the audience for Tuesday’s debate. Also, questions on what role Vice President Mike Pence will be forced to play in the coming weeks is in question. 2511

This story proves age can be just a state of mind. Meet a woman who surprised herself and now inspires all of us.For 80-year-old weightlifter Sally Robertson, it takes breathing, focus and form for a solid bench press. But despite her age, Robertson is able to handle these tasks with ease. Just a few months ago, Robertson barely worked out, but things have changed."I love it!" Robertson said. "I love doing it! I really really enjoy it!"Robertson works out with her trainer Alyssa Mallett and husband Bob Robertson who last year, could barely walk."The only way he could get out of a chair was to pull himself," said Robertson. "So we knew that we were looking at moving into senior housing."He started working out at Castle Rock Adventist Hospital HealthFit Gym, a gym staffed with kinesiologists that provides fitness care and encourages physicians to “prescribe” exercise and fitness. "Coming here for two weeks, he could stand up without using hands," said Robertson. "And believe me, that totally got my attention."           Robertson decided to start weightlifting, and found the biggest battle wasn't with her body, but with her mind."I had lots of mind talk that said, 'You're too old you can't do this. But I just made up my mind to do my best," said Robertson.Robertson started slow."At first it's like, 'That's way too much I can't do that,'" said Robertson. Eventually, the weight she could lift began to rise, along with her confidence. She set a lofty goal: To compete in her region's Senior Olympics."I mentioned to Alyssa, 'Oh I've always wanted to do that,'" Robertson remembers. "And she said, 'You can.'"Mallett helped Robertson get ready and months later she was ready to compete."When I went to the Senior Olympics, I just said 'I don't care what kind of a fool I make out of myself I don't care anything about anything except I'm just going to do it,'" Robertson said.Robertson dead-lifted 10 pounds more than she had ever done before, and took home the gold."Oh I was I was so excited," said Robertson. "I was. I was excited and I was proud of myself. I was really proud."Sally's not only lifting, but walking in virtual 5Ks.  Each medal on her wall helps to change her self image."When I walk in there I look up and I go, 'I am a walker,'" said Robertson.Robertson says we can all make these changes, by taking the first step and going somewhere you feel comfortable."I wouldn't think of going in a gym with all the skinny people lifting weights in all their nice spandex clothes," said Robertson. "I just would not do that."And when the voices in your head tell you that you can't?"Tell those voices to shut up," Robertson said. "I mean, look at me."Lifting weights but more importantly uplifting yourself; at 80 or any age. 2841
