SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the lack of housing in San Diego, you need to act fast or you could miss out on a great home. Some San Diegans are getting proactive. They’re not waiting for a home to go up for rent; they’re reaching out to landlords before the property is even available. 10News is sharing a man's creative way to make it San Diego. All it takes is one breathtaking look and the appeal is undeniable. Orange Avenue, The Hotel Del, the Ferry Landing; they all make Coronado irresistible."Coronado is awesome. It's such a small-town feel. People say ‘hi’ to each other. You know your neighbors," said Cory Stock.Stock is a hard-working Surface Rescue Swimmer Instructor for the Navy. He doesn’t have a lot of time to research and look for a new place to live.RELATED: People converting vans to avoid high rent"Lots of swimming, lots of PT," said Stock.Work for Stock is either at Naval Base San Diego or at Naval Base Coronado right on the island. So, Stock decided Coronado would also be a great place to call home. But there was one problem."The turnaround of places is so quick here," said Stock.Knowing anything in his price range might get snatched up in a heartbeat, Stock decided to get proactive and created a post on the Coronado Happenings Facebook page. He was looking for a one or two bedroom rental no later than January 1. It didn't hurt that he threw in the part about being active duty Navy with excellent credit and references, and that he's also a handyman. RELATED: Think we're in a housing crisis? Try this city"The mere fact that you're in the military; it gives you a lot of credit right off the bat," said Stock. In Coronado, being in the military practically means you're already vetted. And it worked. Within weeks Stack and his girlfriend found an affordable home near work, right in the middle of paradise. "Facebook is so big now and social media,” said Stock. “It's a lot easier to get your name out that way to people you'll probably never meet rather than hoping you bump into somebody."Stock moves into his new place at the beginning of the new year. 2097

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors live with an invisible injury, and its effects can be debilitating."I was not happy with myself, I was unhealthy, I was seeking all sorts of excitement and danger, I was drinking a whole heck of a lot, very angered, always in pain, migraines, physically and emotionally drained, unhealthy in so many ways," said Jimmy Works, a retired Marine Corps veteran. While his last deployment was in 2010, Works was only diagnosed with TBI this year despite suffering multiple head injuries in combat."It's part of life, it's a new reality," said Works. Works and other TBI survivors are now finding healing through LoveYourBrain Yoga, an evidence-based program now in dozens of states. "What's unique about the LoveYourBrain series is it's specifically for survivors of traumatic brain injuries and their caregivers," said Nancine Decherd, a facilitator for the program. The program helps participants cope with their injuries and also provides a support base:Adapts specific poses to prevent dizziness and headachesOffers similar movements in a similar sequence to support learning and memoryUses soft lighting and soothing music to make the yoga class environment welcomingIncorporates strategies to focus attention and release negative thoughtsBuilds community through group discussion with empowering TBI-related themesKat Blue is another San Diego participant. “This is a someplace to go, and people are here who understand me or at least are empathetic about what I'm dealing with," said Blue.LoveYourBrain Yoga was created following the positive results of a pilot study conducted by Dartmouth College. And a recently published study in Disability and Rehabilitation showed LoveYourBrain Yoga generated many powerful physical, emotional, cognitive, and social benefits. The six-week program is free to TBI survivors and their caregivers. Learn more about upcoming sessions in San Diego. 1950

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Vandals damaged a park in Sabre Springs Thursday night, dumping sand into toilets and scrawling inappropriate graffiti on the walls. Trash cans were emptied out and piles of wood chips were dumped along the entrance to the South Creek Neighborhood Park. The clogged toilets and sinks caused minor flooding in the bathrooms. Some of the plumbing was also damaged, according to the San Diego Police Department. City crews cleaned up the mess by the afternoon. Police were still searching for the culprits Friday. 537

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The threat of a major lawsuit has led to several San Diego County cities changing how they are holding elections. As voters in those districts head to the polls or get their mail-in ballots, they will notice a big change in their options on who to vote for.15 jurisdictions in the county are switching from at-large elections to district elections. This means those jurisdictions have been carved up into districts. In those races voters will only be able to vote for someone who lives in that same district."It's going to create some confusion at the ballot box," Encinitas City Councilmember Tony Kranz told 10News. "You're going to wonder why you can't vote for some of those folks."Encinitas made the change for 2018, along with Carlsbad, El Cajon, Oceanside, Poway, San Marcos, Santee and Vista. School Districts using the new voting system are Cajon Valley Union, Carlsbad Unified, Oceanside Unified, Poway Unified, San Dieguito Union High School, and San Marcos Unified. In most cases, the change is a response to a threatened lawsuit. Attorney Kevin Shenkman, who works in Malibu, has threatened lawsuits challenging the legality of at-large elections across California. He says at-large elections are a violation of California's Voter's Rights Act of 2001."It's just a fundamentally unfair election system that freezes out minorities," Shenkman told 10News.Shenkman says at-large elections make it easier for the majority, even a slim majority, to take full control city councils, school boards, and other elected bodies. He says studies have shown that leaves minority groups without a voice. In an interview with 10News, he pointed out examples, including a claim that Hispanic voters did not have enough representation in Encintas, and a claim that voters in the southern portion of Poway have disproportionally less power than those in other parts of Poway."District elections are just a more fair system," Shenkman says. 1974

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When the March of Dimes was founded in the 1930's, the mission was to fight polio, now the focus is to help all women and babies get the healthcare they need. But there are still plenty of obstacles, especially for women of color.Like Winter, who lost a premature baby, "What can we do to bridge the gap to make sure that African-American women have a great chance to experience birth?"According to March of Dimes black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy related causes than white women. The organization also reports that black babies are twice as likely to die before their first birthday. In San Diego, the inequities also apply to immigrant communities and those who don't speak English.March of Dimes' job is to reach those under served groups.Marta Bills, with March of Dimes San Diego says there are all sorts of ways the organization is trying to promote equality, including increased funding, providing scientific research and even training healthcare providers to tackle bias."To just ensure that they are providing the most respectful and unbiased care they possibly can," Bills said.March of Dimes is also expanding a program that promotes group prenatal care.It was impacted when Covid hit, but local clinics are figuring out ways to start back up again safely.Bills says the groups give women who participate more time with their doctors but also lead to better outcomes overall because patients tend to show up to their appointments more often. 1506
