General Mills, the maker of Gold Medal flour, has recalled 5-pound bags of its unbleached all-purpose flour for possible E. coli O26 contamination, the FDA announced on Monday. The bags of flour have an expiration date of Sept. 6, 2020. The package UPC is: 016000 196100. There have been no reported illnesses, and General Mills said the recall is out of an abundance of caution. Those with recalled products are encouraged to throw out the flour, and contact General Mills at 1-800-230-8103. The FDA added that all flour should not be consumed raw, and that fully cooking flour kills of E. coli. "Although most strains of E. coli are harmless, others can make you sick. E. coli O26 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration," the FDA said. FORT MYERS, Fla. — A Florida boy who called 911 to report he was hungry and wanted a pizza got a lesson in proper emergency call etiquette — but he also got a pie.The Sanford Police Department said in a Facebook post the hungry grade-schooler called 911 last Friday.Three officers went to the home.The boy's older sister told them they were fine, and her brother had used the phone without her knowledge.The officers explained the 9-1-1 system is only for emergencies. Fred "Curly" Neal, a Harlem Globetrotters icon who played in more than 6,000 games, has died, the team announced Thursday. He was 77. Neal played in 97 countries. About 90 percent of Nebraska’s land is used for agriculture in some capacity, making the damage from floodwaters significant.“The disaster Nebraska has been impacted by for the last week is something we have not seen before in our history,” says Steve Wellman, director of Nebraska Department of Agriculture.Wellman says three-quarters of the state’s counties have declared emergencies. The disaster hits at a time when, according to the American Farm Bureau, Midwest farmer bankruptcies were already up almost 20 percent from the previous year.Some farmers who are facing such serious crop or livestock loss may have to throw in the towel on their livelihoods.“It’s a possibility that some producers will not rebound from this, but that’s [going to] be up to the individuals and what their situation is,” Wellman says.Nebraska resident Alex Stepanek didn’t want to sit idly by and watch that happen. Stepanek posted a collage of photos on Facebook last week, and after seeing it go viral, he decided to start a small fundraiser.“I grew up on a farm near St. Paul, Nebraska. Growing up in a small town, you have that feeling of community of wanting to help each other,” Stepanek says. “And I think all of Nebraska is like that in total, especially in times of crisis. And so, I think this was a great time for Nebraska to come together.”Stepanek has now raised almost a quarter of a million dollars. He says he’s working with the state’s farm bureau to make sure at least a third of that goes straight to farmers.
