SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two pregnant women in San Diego County have been hospitalized due to flu complications, the county's Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday. A 40-year-old woman spent 16 days in the intensive care unit and a 30-year-old woman spent nine days in the ICU. Both women were unvaccinated, in their third trimesters and contracted influenza A. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pregnant women have some of the highest risk of developing flu complications if they remain unvaccinated. “That is why they're one of the groups for which vaccination isextremely important," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Changes in the immune system, heart and lungs during pregnancy make pregnant women (and women up to two weeks after delivery) more susceptible to severe illness from the flu, which could require hospitalization." Officials from the CDC and the Health and Human Services Agency suggest that pregnant women receive the flu vaccine at any point in their pregnancy. However, the nasal spray flu vaccine is not recommended for pregnant women. Flu cases in the county ticked up during the week of Dec. 9-15, according to the county's weekly influenza report. Confirmed flu cases totaled 290 compared to 199 the previous week. The county's overall total of confirmed flu cases is at 940, well behind the 1,641 cases at this time last flu season. Everyone 6 months or older is recommended to get the flu vaccine each year. In addition to pregnant women, health officials strongly advise the vaccination for people with a heightened risk of serious flu complications, like people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes. County residents can get vaccinated at doctors' offices, retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county's public health centers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old was hospitalized Saturday night after being shot at a gas station in Skyline. Police say the shooting happened at an Arco station near South Meadow Brooke and Paradise Valley Road. According to police, the victim and his friends were walking through the parking lot when one of them was shot. Witnesses told police an argument broke out between the victim and three other teens when one of the three boys, who are all under the age of 18, shot the 16-year-old in the stomach before running away. The 16-year-old was taken to the hospital where he is expected to survive. 613

She told Christopher Dougherty he doesn’t have the right to prefer his kid’s expenses over his creditors.Today the judge ruled Dougherty will be in Chapter seven bankruptcy, meaning that he and his wife are no longer in charge of their own assets.A trustee will investigate and liquidate those assets.Dougherty is being accused of running a Ponzi scheme targeting mostly elderly victims who planning for retirement and taking more than million, according to bankruptcy court records.In bankruptcy court documents, the United States Trustee wrote Dougherty’s “deception is the basis of a Ponzi scheme.”“[Their] practice of using new investment money to pay existing investors dividends and the principal gave the false impression that the payments received by investors came from earnings and profits or from a return of their principal,” the documents said.The San Diego County Sheriff's Department tells 10News there is a criminal investigation into Christopher Dougherty with at least 30 potential victims.The Securities and Exchange Commission also has an open investigation into Dougherty. 1237

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two men who took part in a fatal Pacific Beach home invasion that resulted in the shotgun slaying of a resident were sentenced Friday to state prison terms.Carlos Yslas, 25, and Pedro Ramirez, 28, were sentenced Friday for their roles in the death of 44-year-old MarcAnthony Mendivil, who was shot in a home in the 2300 block of Wilbur Avenue on Dec. 29, 2018.Mendivil was living at the home of another defendant, Paul Charles Weinberger, 51, at the time of his death and was killed in what court documents describe as a forcible eviction gone wrong.Yslas, who was the gunman in the incident, was sentenced to 27 years in state prison, based on his plea to a voluntary manslaughter charge. Deputy District Attorney Flavio Nominati said Yslas was released from prison on a residential burglary conviction about a week prior to the shooting.RELATED: Three men plead guilty to Pacific Beach shotgun slayingRamirez was sentenced to eight years in prison on Friday, while co- defendant Freddy Sosa, 38, was sentenced last year to eight years in prison. Weinberger was sentenced to three years earlier this week.Sosa pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, while Weinberger pleaded to an assault with a firearm charge.According to court documents, Sosa had previously lived at the home, but was kicked out by Weinberger following a dispute. Mendivil then moved in, but soon after, Weinberger contacted Sosa asking him for help in removing Mendivil from the home for unspecified reasons, investigators were told.Weinberger told police he was drugged on the night of Mendivil's killing and forced to withdraw cash from his bank to pay Yslas and Ramirez, who were brought in to assist in forcibly removing Mendivil from the home, court documents state.However, in the process of forcing Mendivil out, Yslas shot Mendivil twice. According to defense attorney Kristen Haden, Yslas believed the victim was reaching for a weapon, which later turned out to be a knife beneath his mattress.Officers found Mendivil suffering from a gunshot wound when they responded to a 1:47 a.m. call of a possible shooting, San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs said. He died at a hospital about 45 minutes later, Dobbs said.Weinberger and Sosa were arrested the day of the killing, while Yslas and Ramirez were already in custody on unrelated charges when they were re- arrested and charged last February for their roles in the homicide. 2430
