After being cooped up for months due to COVID-19, Jason Andre is stoked to shred the curl again.This surfer, however, also has concerns about getting back to the beach.“I feel pretty trepidatious about going to any open beaches,” he said.While Andre scouts the best breaks up and down the East Coast, he’s also keeping an eye on coronavirus concerns in his home state of North Carolina.“Things are actually kind of reaching new peaks as far as infection rates and hospitalizations,” he said. “So, it’s a little weird.”Weird and potentially dangerous.With summer here and cities lifting their restrictions, more lifeguards are experiencing more challenges.“We had like 48 water rescues for the weekend,” said Cpt. Tony Wallace of the Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue team.He says strong rip currents have kept his crew busy with rescues and that COVID-19 has changed how his team now handles medical responses.“We have stopped mouth-to-mouth resuscitation,” Wallace said. “So, now we go to a bag valve mask to assist in breathing if need be.”Across the country on the Pacific Coast, lifeguards are working to protect the public and ensure social distancing.“We like to do what we call preventive action work were we direct people to safe areas on the beach before they get into trouble,” said Lt. Claude Panis of the Huntington Beach Fire Department Marine Safety Divison.He says summer is always a challenging time at the beach and that the pandemic has increased the dangers.“I think people have been locked up and they're really itching to get outside,” Panis said. “And of course, the beach is a popular destination.”Panis said when people are in trouble in the ocean the first thing to do is to stay calm and try not to panic.Back on the Carolina Coast, Andre is dealing with challenges in and out of the ocean.“We’ve had a pretty huge influx of Portuguese man-of-war lately which are really dangerous, extremely painful jellys that will sting you,” he said.Andre is looking to stay safe by avoiding marine life and large crowds.“I have a small handful of friends who I will invite to come out on the boat and we will go find a sandbar of own,” he said.Searching for safety by finding a private beach during the pandemic. 2228

(WKBW) — The New York State United Teachers are holding a press conference on Thursday calling for a strengthened statewide mask mandate in schools, which includes masks to be worn at all times in school.The teachers union says it will release a letter to the state Department of Health calling for revised school reopening guidance.“The governor has said — and we agree — that parents and educators must be confident in their school district’s reopening plan in order for this to work,” NYSUT President Andy Pallotta said. “As we hear of disparate mask procedures and other issues in reopening plans across the state, it’s clear that the state must step in. A Washington man who followed the Pittsburgh synagogue suspect on social media was arrested on gun charges after his relatives reached out to authorities, federal court documents show.Jeffrey R. Clark Jr. was charged Tuesday with illegal possession of a high-capacity magazine and transporting a firearm in interstate commerce.Clark's family members tipped off authorities after they grew concerned over his involvement with the so-called alt-right movement, an affidavit says. It said he was "friends" with synagogue shooting suspect Robert Bowers on Gab, a social media platform that describes itself as "the free speech social network."On October 27, within hours of the attack that killed 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Clark's brother, Edward, went to Theodore Roosevelt Island in Washington and fatally shot himself, the affidavit says."After the death of Edward Clark, Jeffrey Clark became more outspoken about his radical views, expressing them openly to his family members who were in the area following Edward Clark's death," the affidavit says. "During these conversations, Jeffrey Clark defended Robert Bowers' killings at the Tree-of-Life Synagogue. Jeffrey Clark also stated that he and Edward Clark had both fantasized about killing 'Jews and blacks.' "A few days after the suicide, two family members called federal authorities and said Jeffrey Clark had been "really riled up" and "agitated" after his brother's death, and he could be a danger to himself or others, the affidavit says. 1534

Alan Bean, the fourth person to walk on the moon and the last surviving member of the Apollo 12 mission, died Saturday in Houston, according to his family and NASA. He was 86."Alan was the strongest and kindest man I ever knew," his wife, Leslie Bean, said in a statement. "He was the love of my life and I miss him dearly." She added he died "peacefully ... surrounded by those who loved him."The retired astronaut fell ill two weeks ago while traveling in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the statement said.Born on March 15, 1932, in Wheeler, Texas, Bean was a test pilot in the US Navy when NASA selected him and 13 others in October 1963 for training to become the third group of NASA astronauts, according to the family obituary shared by the space agency.His first mission to space was in November 1969 as a member of the Apollo 12 crew, the second to land on the moon, it said.
