Then a "thank you" bonus.Now, Kroger employees will have to be satisfied with gradual increases in wages and benefits.CEO Rodney McMullen said Thursday that Kroger will not re-instate the popular hazard-pay benefits it announced in March and continued into June.This despite continued calls by union officials to bring back the -per-hour wage boost that Kroger and other grocery chains had been paying their essential workers.Kroger held its annual meeting Thursday, an event in which McMullen usually fields questions from local reporters. This year, McMullen agreed to talk by phone, saying that the company will see some permanent changes from the global pandemic that caused food shortages, surging revenue, binge buying and changes in consumer spending habits.Kroger's local employment increased 33% to 20,000 since the pandemic began, while the company hired 100,000 people nationwide.McMullen expects Kroger’s total employment — which peaked at 560,000 — to remain above 500,000 going forward. He also expects digital sales to remain at higher levels than the company achieved prior to COVID-19.And he believes the company will benefit from a permanent shift toward eating at home.“What we’re finding is people enjoy cooking more than they thought they would — at least, that’s what they’re telling us,” McMullen said. “They especially enjoy doing it with their kids, because it gives you a reason to spend time together. If your kids are happy, you’re happy.”McMullen also foresees a permanent shift towards higher wages, even if it doesn’t come in the form of hazard pay.“We had planned on incrementally investing 0 million a year in wages,” he said. “This year, that’ll end up being 0 million, and that’s brought our average hourly rate to higher than . We’re also continuing to invest aggressively in terms of safety and protection as we learn about it, providing masks for our associates and those things.”On the topic of wages, McMullen said Kroger will not join the ranks of companies cutting pay as one way of coping with coronavirus.“At this point, that is not something that we’ve talked about or evaluated,” he said. “It’s not something that would be high on our list of things to do.”Kroger is one of 19 local publicly traded companies that have not announced coronavirus pay cuts for executives. But Tracy also said she would resign if what she calls “cyber bullying” toward her doesn’t stop.Speaking at her Fairfield, Ohio gym, the owner and coach of Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy strongly condemned Nassar and didn’t deny the positive comments she made about the since-convicted sexual abuser to Scripps affiliate WCPO in Cincinnati in December 2016. Tracy’s two-year-old comment sparked a controversy this week when Aly Raisman, an Olympic champion and Nassar survivor, went on Twitter and protested Tracy’s new national post as Elite Development Coordinator.As much as Tracy said she wanted the job, she also said she has received three “fairly threatening emails” and one that said she “should be in a jail cell next to Larry Nassar.” She has also been vilified on social media to the point that she has already told US Gymnastics she would not keep job if it means hurting her family.“What I feel I need to say is that when I saw Aly putting out some things about something I said two years ago as this was all coming out, that was my truth,” Tracy said about her 2016 comments about Nassar, the former national team doctor now accused of sexually assaulting up to 250 women and girls and serving up to 165 years in prison.“Larry had been treating my athletes for well over 25 years and had served them very well and had helped me and my athletes return to action," she said Thursday.  "He had been someone that we all unfortunately had trusted and depended on, so when I was asked about my experience with him, that’s what I said. So I’m not denying that I said that.“Would I say that anymore? Absolutely not … The man is a monster.  But at that moment, I looked at him like I would my dad or my brother. That was the level of trust I had.“But as we all find out, these people are that good. They are master manipulators. And he didn’t just fool me and all these athletes, he fooled lots of parents, lots of coaches, lots of administrative people."For him to have abused the hundreds of young women that he abused, he was beyond evil, he was beyond manipulative, you can’t even put into words.“I just want people to know that there is no way I would have someone like that working with my athletes if I even had an inkling he was a sexual abuser.”Before Tracy talked to WCPO in December 2016, Nassar’s secret life as a pedophile and sex offender had already started to become public.Two years earlier in 2014, a Michigan State graduate had complained that Nassar, the doctor for the university gymnastics team, sexually assaulted her during a medical exam. But MSU cleared Nassar.In July 2017, Nassar pleaded guilty to three federal charges after investigators said he possessed at least 37,000 graphic videos and images of child pornography, including images of prepubescent children engaged in sex acts.In August 2016, a former Michigan State gymnast filed a criminal complaint that Nassar sexually abused her during treatment for lower back pain.In September 2016, two gymnasts publicly accused Nassar of sexual abuse in an Indianapolis Star report. Michigan State fired Nassar a week later.In November 2016, Nassar was charged in Ingham County, Michigan (home to Michigan State) with three counts of criminal sexual conduct with a person under 13. (KGTV) -- Chula Vista’s next city manager will be the first Hispanic and first woman to serve in that role.Maria Kachadoorian, who has worked for the City of Chula Vista for 22 years, will move from her position as Assistant City Manager and take over for the retiring Gary Halbert.Halbert has served as the City Manager since 2014, and he has been with the city since 2008. He is set to retire on June 19.As the City Manager, Kachadoorian will be in charge of overseeing and maintaining the city’s budget. She will also “advance the Chula Vista Bayfront development, launch Ambulance Transport Services, and foster initiatives that better connect the City’s diverse communities.”In a statement, Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas said of Kachadoorian: “Maria has the knowledge, skills and vision we need to move the City forward during these unprecedented times. (KGTV) -- A man died Friday after a fight broke out at a party in Chula Vista, police say.Chula Vista Police say they were called to the 1100 block of Ocelot Avenue around 11:30 p.m. to investigate a report of a loud party.After arriving on scene, bystanders directed officers to the 400 block of East Oxford in reference to a fight.When they arrived, police found two men bleeding from unknown injuries.
