SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman who shot through her neighbors’ apartment in Clairemont Mesa after they complained about noise was convicted Tuesday.Brittany Lefler, 37, is facing up to 36 years in prison after being convicted of assault with a semiautomatic firearm among other charges.The prosecutor in the case argued that Lefler was drinking and was “out of control” and “verbally abusive” when Erik Morales called police around 1 a.m. on December 29, 2016 at her apartment on Beadnell Way. RELATED: Topless standoff suspect pleads not guilty in courtMorales and her roommates told police Lefler kept banging on the wall and screaming inside her apartment. When officers arrived, Lefler wanted to know who called police on her. Morales’ 19-year-old son said that, at one point, he went outside and asked Lefler to “keep it down.”That’s when Lefler reached into her boot and pulled out what appeared to be a gun. "She (Lefler) said, `C'mon outside, I'll bust a cap in you,"' Henry Molina testified.Molina said he heard Lefler telling police she kept a gun for “things like this.” Deputy District Attorney Michael Reilly told the jury that around 5 a.m., Lefler pointed her gun at the people inside Morales’ apartment before pulling the trigger."She (Lefler) did it on purpose," the prosecutor said. "In a moment of anger and fury, she shot through that front door. Ms. Lefler sent a message with a bullet through that front door. She can't do that!"Deputy Alternate Public Defender Gilson Gray told the jury Lefler called 911 several times that night but police didn’t help her.Gray said Lefler was home alone, scared and outnumbered by her complaining neighbors. "You put your foot on it, and it releases the bars because there's a little spacer in it and it will pop them, and the bars are supposed to swing open," Lyon said.RELATED: One dead, five injured in Logan Heights house fireMany homes still have old bars, or those with the safety mechanism can rust, locking them in place. "Rarely do people maintain those, just because they're something out of sight, out of mind," Lyon said solemnly.Neighbor Miguel Hernandez a few doors down from the deadly Sunday morning fire told 10News in Spanish he checks his home's bars often to ensure the security of his family. He added he checks the smoke alarms as well, changing the batteries the recommended 6-months or each year.Lyon said one more thing you can do is "sleeping with your bedroom doors closed because that helps compartmentalize and keeps the fire out of your room, gives you more time to get out."It also gives firefighters more time to get to you.Lyon said firefighters learn how to break through burglar bars in the academy, but it takes precious time. 1534

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Police officer escaped injury when a driver reportedly tried to run him over Sunday morning.The incident happened around 1 a.m. near the intersection of F and Sixth Streets in the Gaslamp district.The officer was able to jump off his bicycle, which was dragged beneath the suspect’s vehicle. Police say the driver ditched his car and fled the scene.Police said Sunday that they are still searching for the suspect.No description of the suspect or suspect vehicle were given. 514

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman suffered serious injuries from a hit-and-run crash Saturday while walking in the East Village, San Diego Police said.The 47-year-old woman was dragging her wheelchair across F St. at Park Blvd. at 3:55 a.m. when she was struck by a gray or silver Honda heading west.The car was last seen going north on 11th Ave., police said.The victim suffered two broken legs and a pelvic fracture.San Diego Police Traffic Division officers are investigating the case. 494

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman is among those killed in the Conception boat fire off Santa Cruz Island, her coworkers in Coronado told 10News Tuesday. A manager at Nicky Rottens restaurant at 100 Orange Ave. identified Nicole Quitasol as one of the victims of the deadly fire. Quitasol was on the dive trip with four relatives, her coworkers posted on Facebook. "Nicole has worked with our Nicky Rottens Coronado family for years, and she will be remembered as an adventurous & loving soul," wrote Bryn Butolph, who described Quitasol as smart and loving."She will be greatly missed," Butolph added. He told 10News Quitasol was devoted to her dog, Peanut Butter.The family of five was among 34 people presumed dead in the blaze. All were sleeping below deck when the fire started early Monday.
