(KGTV) — Navy officials say the San Diego-based aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt is searching for a Sailor overboard off Southern California's coastline Thursday.The ship started rescue efforts after a lookout spotted what they believed to be a person in the water at about 7:30 a.m., according to the Navy. The Navy says one Sailor was unaccounted for during a command-wide roll call. The Sailor's parents identified him as 20-year-old Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Apprentice Ethan Goolsby of San Antonio, Texas, Scripps affiliate KSAT reports. The Navy has not officially identified the missing Sailor.Three search and rescue helicopters and a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat were launched to assist.The U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy aircraft, USS Bunker Hill, USS Russell, USS Howard, and USS Charleston are also helping in the search and rescue efforts. The Navy says search efforts will continue through Thursday night.No further information about the search efforts was immediately released.The USS Theodore Roosevelt departed San Diego just days ago for a sustainment exercise ahead of its second deployment this year, according to USNI News. “For people who live right on along the runway where these changes occur and experienced increases in exposure to airplane noise, there’s an increase in adverse birth outcomes and specifically, low birth weight babies,” said Laura Argys, a professor at CU Denver. Her research shows that living in a flight path can increase the chance of having a child born underweight by approximately 20%.She explains prolonged exposure to noise can adversely affect the health of people, specifically expectant mothers.“Exposure to high levels noise changes sort of your stress response, your physical stress response, and it can disrupt sleep, it triggers stress related hormones at higher levels, you get increased heart rate, you get higher blood pressure,” said Argys.The research was extensive, analyzing a decade worth of births.“We were able to get birth records for 10 years, so about 100,000 births that happened over that period,” Argys said.The research takes a look how what the FAA calls NextGen. NextGen is an overhaul of the many different aspects of air traffic, this takes a look at the how NextGen impacts the plane landing.“It consolidates the flight pattern, they all come in a long the same trajectory, it reduces the time between planes, which means more planes can land, and they can come in at somewhat lower altitudes, obviously above residencies where it increases the noise exposure,”Argys said.But an industry expert says airlines are doing the best they can to reduce noise.“Most major airlines, if not all, are very sensitive to the neighbors around the airport. So from take off up to 3,000 feet, most aircraft will climb at the safest, the minimum speed but the safest speed so that when they get to 3,000 feet and reduce the noise tremendously,” said Richard Levy, a retired airline pilot with more than 30 years of experience. He says safety always has to remain priority number one.“An airplane lands into the wind, for the safest operation," Levy said.But that doesn’t mean that the air industry doesn’t take noise into serious consideration.“Noise location around airports affects communities, property values. You have noise monitors, near the airport. And if an airplane creates too much noise, we say in colloquial terms, it rings the bell,” said Levy. And Argys says there are a few things you can do as well. Soundproofing your home will help reduce noise while inside and if you’re looking at buying a home near an airport, new construction will likely have better sound proofing material than older ones. She also says local governments should consider not residential areas near airports.“I know we don’t all like having to drive distances to get to the airport, the a-train helps, so not building residential space near the airport would be one solution,” said Argys. 2810

(KGTV) -- San Diego nurse Ana Wilkinson spent a month working at New York’s Harlem Hospital during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. She returned to San Diego May 21st and returned to work at UCSD Medical Center, just three days later. The transition has not been easy.“A part of me feels guilty leaving my team there. The first day back at UCSD Medical Center I felt lost and I cried.”Wilkinson’s firefighter husband and two young sons understood when she answered the call for help in New York City. She has served on medical missions all over the world but this mission was the most challenging. Her motto is that no patient dies alone.“I became attached to my patients and because their families couldn’t be there, I was there holding their hands when they died.”Wilkinson says her time in New York has made her a better person and a better nurse. 860

(SAN DIEGO) KGTV -- New records released show police responded to the home of the man that injured two police officers dozens of times in the past. On June 23rd, police responded to a disturbance call at the Rolando Court condo. When they smelled smoke, they called firefighters to the scene. Officers knocked on the front door for more than 20 minutes but received no response, officials said. Firefighters forced entry into the home. That’s when firefighters and officers were met with gunfire. Two officers were shot.The man inside the condo, Joe Darwish, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.Following the June 23rd shooting, Team 10 requested details regarding the number of times police responded to Darwish's address, but they were not released until after the investigation was over. The officers were cleared of any wrongdoing.Documents show that since 2013, there were 31 calls for service to Darwish's address before the night of the shooting. More than half were 5150 calls, where officers checked on the individual’s mental wellbeing. Nine calls were for disturbances, some with violence. In February 2016, there was one call listed as “CCCC,” which police say describes a chronic caller to the department. The records also revealed police were at the home eight days before the shooting for another disturbance call with potential violence. Darwish did have a criminal history and was not supposed to own any weapons. 1443
