The state of Tennessee came one step closer to allowing wine sales on Sunday after state Senators voted to approve a bill which had already passed through the House. The vote passed 17-11 on Wednesday morning. Final approval will now lie in the hands of Governor Bill Haslam who needs to sign the bill in order for it to become law.   The controversial plan will allow grocery stores to sell wine on Sunday beginning January 1, 2019.It will also permit liquor stores to immediately begin operating seven days a week. However, liquor store owners argue they are at a huge competitive disadvantage against major grocery store chains, who don't need to make any staffing changes in order to be open on Sundays.  House members approved a similar plan on Monday by a vote of 53 to 35.If approved by the Governor, wine and liquor sales would be allowed from 8 a.m. to 11p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10a.m. to 11p.m. on Sunday.Tennessee first voted to allow grocery stores to sell wine back in 2016 after years of back and forth and under constant pressure from citizens and grocery store lobbyists.   1151

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling nearly half a million Kidde smoke detectors, saying they could fail to work in the event of a fire.According to the CPSC, anyone with a Kidde smoke alarm should remove their alarm from the ceiling or wall and look for a yellow cap on the inside of the alarm (see photo above). The students-turned-activists who survived a mass shooting at their Florida high school last month are featured on the glossy cover of Time magazine.The magazine on Thursday revealed the cover of its April 2 issue, which features Marjory Stoneman Douglas students who are leading the national conversation about gun control in the wake of the Valentine's Day shooting that claimed the lives of 17 students and faculty members.Emma González, David Hogg, Cameron Kasky, Alex Wind and Jaclyn Corin all appear on the cover, with the word "ENOUGH," written in bold letters and imposed across the image. The US House of Representatives will vote on whether to legalize marijuana across the country in September. This would be the first time a chamber of Congress has ever voted on removing marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act.Cannabis was included as what is called a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act in 1970. Schedule I drugs are defined as having a high potential for abuse and no medical benefit. Other Schedule I drugs include heroin, LSD, ecstasy and peyote.On Friday, representatives were informed the MORE Act will come up for a vote in the September work period of the House.The MORE Act - Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act - will expunge some cannabis records and create grant opportunities for people who have been negatively impacted by the criminalization of marijuana in addition to removing it from its Schedule I classification, according to Politico.Marijuana is already legal in 11 states, despite the federal designation as a Schedule I drug.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is opposed to the act, and some say the odds of it passing the senate are very slim.Even if the MORE Act passes both chambers of Congress, it would not make sales of marijuana legal. Regulation of marijuana would be left to states to decide how to handle it. 1310
