SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The White House announced Tuesday that it would start cracking down on what the President calls the "California Homeless Takeover." The administration's plans include destroying tents on the street and relocating the homeless population to government facilities. Some local homeless advocates said the plan lacks details and direction. Underneath arguably some of the most expensive condos in San Diego is a place people go to live, rent-free."I think it gives people the opportunity to stabilize and get ready for the next step in their life," Alpha Project Chief Operating Officer Amy Gonyeau said. "Address the issues that are causing them to become homeless."The Alpha Project's Bridge Shelter helps keep 325 people from sleeping on the streets every night. Still, there are nearly 8,000 others in San Diego County without a home. In Los Angeles County, there are 50,000 homeless. The numbers were so astounding, President Trump vowed to intercede. He plans to take down tents on the streets and place the homeless into government-backed facilities."We just can't play Whack-A-Mole and move people from the sidewalk to jail, to tents, to a government facility," independent homeless advocate Michael McConnell said. McConnell said he believes the President's plan is far too vague. "Whether it's a shared housing model, whether short-term or long-term rental assistance, whether it is actually building a brick and mortar supportive housing for some folks, it takes all of these interventions," McConnell said. Gonyeau says representatives from Los Angeles have visited more than a dozen times to study their Bridge Shelter and their seventeen wrap-around services."They want to replicate this model," Gonyeau said. "I know they are going to do that in LA, and some other cities as well."It has become a temporary relief that has helped hundreds of people cycle out of homelessness. But McConnell says this is not enough."I would redirect a lot of the money that we are currently spending on Band-Aids," McConnell said. "I would redirect that into rental assistance in housing dollars so that we can start nibbling away at this deficit."At the end of the day, both McConnell and Gonyeau say California needs more housing, not just affordable housing, but low-income housing. If the President's plan has that as an end goal, both say they are on board."We have a very large unsheltered homeless population in California, and we have an incredible affordable housing crisis here. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thursday, 19 new cases of E. Coli were reported among Marine recruits, according to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.Although 19 new cases were reported, the number of recruits still recovering from the illness fell to 86 Thursday. Tuesday, 302 recruits were reportedly undergoing treatment for E. Coli. That number fell again Wednesday as 214 recruits were still undergoing treatment.RELATED: 26 more Marine recruits sickened by E. coli, according to MCRD"The command is continuing to take precautionary measures and care for those who are affected," said Brig. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This week, thousands of letters, pictures, and cards from local groups were sent to veterans who were not able to visit memorials in their honor this year due to the pandemic.Honor Flight San Diego usually takes veterans to visit memorials in Washington D.C. built in their honor. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, that flight won't take to the sky again until May 2021.Organizers had collected 3,000 letters and cards from local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church organizations, and the national organization, Solider Angels, for previously scheduled flights.In San Diego, 120 San Diego County WWII and Korean War veterans were sent care packages on Friday. Two of those packages were hand-delivered to local veterans by Honor Flight San Diego Founder Dave Smith and Chairman Julie Brightwell.Honor Flight is a trip at no cost to veterans and has taken more than 1,400 WWII and Korean War veterans in San Diego across the country to visit war memorials. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The oldest San Diego women's choir is scrambling to raise funds for a last-second trip to sing at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony. The Choral Club of San Diego dazzled crowds from veterans homes to Spreckles Organ Pavillion. They've been singing since 1939."It was a very private women's group. They all got together in their homes and they had tea," Executive Director Caron Andregg said, painting the picture of what the club looked like back then. In 2012, they officially became a 501(c)(3) non-profit and over the past five years they've been tuning to a more modern note."We've filtered out a lot of the older traditional music and we started filtering in more modern music," Andregg said.She said the crowds have loved it and they've ran with it, gaining notoriety and ultimately an invite to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony. Andregg added someone personally recommended the club to the organizers of the event on Honolulu."Getting 25 ladies to Hawaii is no small task," Music Director Kyle Adam Blair said. The group has been frantically making calls for two weeks, but are not gaining any traction."I can't even get people to pick up their phones ... That's why we're panicking and asking you for help," Andregg said.The club is stepping in after an East Coast choir suffered a misfortune and couldn't perform.Andregg said they are honored for the opportunity to be the only vocal ensemble."We're from a Navy town and we have a relationship with the Midway and we have relationships with other Naval outlets, we've performed for Naval ceremonies," she said.The group needs to raise ,000 in a month so they can book the flights and lodging for the choir members. 1706
