SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — October historically spells fire danger for San Diego and Cal Fire is asking everyone to be ready. The Cedar Fire started Oct. 25, 2003, and burned 280,278 acres. The Witch Creek-Guejito and Harris Fires started Oct. 21, 2007, and burned 288,430 acres. People lost their lives in both fires.Cal Fire Captain Issac Sanchez said it's extremely important San Diegans are prepared to evacuate at a moment's notice. "Be ready to evacuate, have your defensible clearance space done. Not only do it, but do it responsibly. Do it first thing in the morning when temperatures are low and humidity levels are relatively high," Sanchez said. The weather contributes to a dangerous cocktail, increasing October's potency."You have that combination of fuel and weather really giving a one-two punch to us pretty consistently," Sanchez said. The Valley Fire in September reminded San Diegans of how quickly a spark can grow out of control and how fast evacuations can happen.Next week's weather doesn't look good, according to Sanchez. "It's going to be warm, it's going to be dry and there's going to be some sort of wind blowing from the east," says Sanchez. "That's the kind of combination that gets folks nervous around here."The good news is firefighters are coming home from working in northern California and will be standing by, in addition to Marines and Sailors."A strike team of Type 6 Fire Engines is just getting back to San Diego from the Creek Fire in Fresno," Sanchez said. "It's a resource that we have used in the past. It's one that we have in our back pocket and will not hesitate to use in the future should the need arise."Visit Readyforwildfire.org for tips on how to prepare you and your family, and ReadySanDiego.org to register for evacuation alerts. 1786

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More rain arrived in San Diego Wednesday, less than a week after a storm swept through the county, leaving some areas flooded and city crews preparing for the wet weather. In Coronado, on First Street, crews worked to clear pipes near the shoreline. This is a large reason for flooding in the area. Public Services Director, Clifford Maurer, says flooding comes after sand and sediment gets into the storm drain from the high tides.“Some of the outfalls, the pipes that go into the bay or into the open waters have flapper valves on them. So they only allow water to go out, not come in,” says Maurer. “But when the water is above those valves there’s nothing you can do. There’s just nowhere for the water go."RELATED: Check out your daily forecastThe City of Coronado is also offering sandbags to residents. The bags are already filled and can be picked up at four different locations around the island. The City of San Diego is also preparing for the rain. Crews have signs and barricades already lined up in Mission Valley, an area frequent to flooding.Crews are placing bypass pumps in area they expect to flood. “Bypass pumps help relieve some areas of our system that may be overwhelmed with stormwater,” says Anthony Santacroce.RADAR: Live updating San Diego radarFifteen two-person crews that will be out patrolling areas within the city, looking for any storm damage or flooding. Both cities suggest homeowners should make sure the storm drains near their homes are clear of debris, so it doesn’t get swept in with the rain. 1558

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — President Trump wants to restart the U.S. economy by April 12, but multiple economists, governors and health officials are expressing skepticism about that date amid efforts to flatten the curve of coronavirus infections.Still, the longer the shutdown lasts, the harder it will be for businesses to get up and running, economists say. Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego, said if this lasts through April, it should be survivable for many businesses. However, anything beyond that could render reopening less likely."Some businesses are not going to be able to hang on, even with the help that is coming from the federal government, so they will end up closing for good," Gin said. San Diego's economy is hurting as thousands of restaurant, retail and hotel workers are laid off amid the coronavirus restrictions. Meanwhile, the people who are working from home have very few places to spend their money. Jessie Medina, who opened the Femx Quarter co-working and event center in Mission Hills in November, said her business is out ,000 and she had to put two new hires on hold. "We were getting traction, growing, and all of a sudden it's like, stop," she said. "I really want our doors to open, I don't know how much longer businesses that have these liabilities every month can stay open if they're not making money."Medina said she is trying to do her part by taking out from locally owned restaurants and buying from local sellers, but with her very limited income, she can only do so much. The Workforce Partnership reported Friday that more than 13,000 San Diego workers have been laid off, furloughed or seen their hours cut. Those layoff notices are temporarily no longer required law, so the actual number could be much higher. 1784
