UNITED NATIONS, April 1 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Friday called for greater public awareness of autism, in order to fight the stigma and discrimination facing those who suffer from the disorder.The statement came in a message to mark the annual World Autism Awareness Day, observed globally on April 2."Children and persons with autistic conditions face major challenges associated with stigma and discrimination, as well as a lack of access to support," said Ban."Far too many suffer terrible discrimination, abuse and isolation, in violation of their fundamental human rights," he added.Autism is a disorder that affects the brain's development of social and communication skills, and generally appears in the first three years of life."The number of children and people with autistic conditions continues to rise -- in every nation and in every racial, ethnic and social group," the secretary-general said.Ban said it is critical to support parents of children with the disorder and "create jobs for individuals with autism based on their skills and strengths, and improve public education to better meet the needs of students with autism."

BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhua) -- China's State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) has ordered a "serious investigation" into two kinds of bath products that reportedly gave children skin diseases.The order came after recent reports accused the body wash and lotion used by bathhouse chain Tian Po Po Xi Jiu Tang, or, literally, "Grandma Tian's Bathhouse," in southwest China's Sichuan Province of having "caused severe body damages," according to a SFDA statement released Tuesday.The bathhouse chain, with a history of some 70 years, was first established in Sichuan's capital Chengdu and was listed as a part of the city's Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.The licensed bathhouse claimed to use bath products developed by its own Chinese herbal medicine recipes that protected children from various skin ailments and other diseases, such as eczema, colds, and constipation.However, an unknown number of children suffered pustular psoriasis, a chronic skin irritation characterize by raised bumps, after washing at the bathhouse chain and using the two products, according to reports.Sichuan's provincial food and drug administration bureau previously deemed the two products to be "fake drugs" based on an initial investigation by the local police and food and drug authorities, the statement said.The SFDA urged local food and drug supervision departments across the country to monitor and check the two products sold by the bathhouse chain within their regions, and vowed to punish any violations of laws and regulations.

TAIPEI, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Five crewmen, including four Chinese mainlanders, had been rescued after their fishing boat from Taiwan's Keelung capsized Friday night off southern Taiwan's Kenting, local sources said Sunday.The other two crewmen, including the Taiwanese captain and one mainland fisherman, were still missing. LOS ANGELES, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The death rate in the United States reached an all-time low in 2009, dropping 2.3 percent from 2008, a newly released report said.This was the 10th straight year of decline, demonstrating that Americans are living longer than ever, according to the report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics.The nation saw a drop from 758.7 deaths per 100,000 people in 2008 to 741 per 100,000 people in 2009 when 2,436,682 deaths were reported, said the report published by HealthDay News on Wednesday.However, life expectancy for blacks remained unchanged -- 70.9 years for men and 77.4 years for women. The disparity between whites and blacks is now 4.3 years, representing a 0.2 percent increase from 2008 to 2009, the report found.The report said that deaths fell in 10 of the 15 leading causes of death -- heart disease dropped 3.7 percent, cancer fell 1.1 percent, and stroke declined 4.2 percent.Deaths from Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, chronic lower respiratory diseases and accidents all declined 4.1 percent, according to the report.Deaths from flu and pneumonia fell 4.7 percent, and deaths from septicemia, a bacterial infection, decreased 1.8 percent, the report said.Deaths from homicides fell 6.8 percent, but suicides increased from 35,933 in 2008 to 36,547 in 2009. Other than suicide, which overtook septicemia as the 10th leading cause of death, the ranking of the leading causes of death was unchanged from 2008 to 2009, the report noted.Infant mortality hit a record low in 2009, falling from 6.59 deaths per 1,000 births in 2008 to 6.42, representing a 2.6 percent decrease, according to the report.The report, however, did not give reasons for these trends.Experts think behavioral changes, particularly the decline in smoking, are partly responsible for the improvements.The report's lead author Kenneth Kochanek, a statistician at the center, said this is preliminary data, and the final data, which should be available this summer, may shed some light on the findings.
