SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than a week before the election, there are reports of political yard signs being stolen and vandalized, and in some cases, appearing in yards.Sunday night, just before midnight in a cul-de-sac in El Cajon, surveillance video shows a car driving slowly before it stops to let someone out."A shadowy figure, looks young, maybe 10 years old, gets out of the vehicle, runs in, and grabs a political sign," said Brandon Spaulding.Spaulding says the sign being taken belonged to his neighbor and it read "Trump/Pence, Make America Great Again." That same night, Spaulding's sign, which had been vandalized days before, also disappeared.The apparent thieves in the Sunday's thefts: a child and an adult."Very disappointed and frustrated ... being a terrible role model. As parents, you’re supposed to teach children the different between right and wrong. I was always taught to love my country, and part of that is freedom of speech. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It is a trend that happens around election time—an increase in hate crimes.“The weeks before and after, particularly the presidential elections, we do see a pretty marked increase in hate crimes,” said Leonard Trinh with the hate crime unit at the District Attorney's Office. “In 2016, the two weeks after the election were very busy. In fact, I think the busiest day for hate crimes was the day after the 2016 election. But that was true in 2012 and 2008 and before.”In June, a man was caught on cell phone video punching a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Imperial Beach. The DA’s office filed felony assault and battery charges and hate crime allegations against two men, Jeffrey Brooks and Henry Brooks Jr.In September, the St. Peter’s Chaldean Catholic Cathedral in El Cajon was vandalized with a mix of graffiti. Swastikas, “BLM,” and “Biden 2020” was spray painted on the exterior.Last month, Rabbi Yonatin Helevy said he was attacked by a teenager on a bicycle, who hit him over the head and yelled a racial slur. A 14-year-old was arrested.Trinh said as of Friday, there were 42 potential hate crime cases this year. Six of them were reported in the past few weeks. 17 people have been charged so far.He said they are currently reviewing two more potential hate crime cases that came in this weekend. “We work very with our law enforcement partners and with community leaders,” Trinh said. “We encourage them to report hate crimes and hate incidents whenever they happen.”Trinh said the pandemic has also affected the local Asian-American community. Two hate crime cases were filed in connection to anti-Asian sentiment. In the two previous years, there were no hate crimes filed involving hate against this community.Trinh explained the difference between a hate crime and hate incident.“A hate incident is the use of a racial slur or a homophobic slur or anti-Semitic slur where there’s no threat of violence directed at any person or group of people and no ability to carry out that threat,” Trinh said. A hate crime involves physical harm and actual threats.People should not dismiss hate incidents as harmless, Trinh said.“Those are still concerning because incidents are oftentimes precursors to hate crimes.” Trinh added.Imam Taha Hassane with the Islamic Center said they have seen an increase in reported hate incidents.“We’re working basically at this moment with our local law enforcement to secure our houses of worship,” Hassane said.He said they are preparing for the worst, but hoping for the best.“We don't want people to be at risk or threatened just because of this election,” Hassane said. “The whole world is watching. You want your staff happy. You’ve got to put food on your table. And you’re trying to do the right thing, you’re wearing a mask and you’re indoors, so it’s going to be just an unbelievable, worrisome time,” said Bryan Welch, general manager of the Point Loma Sports Club.Welch said the new restrictions will not have a significant impact on his gym because the Point Loma Sports Club had already moved 90% of its operations outside. But he said he empathizes with gyms that do not have usable outdoor space or a cooperative landlord.Even some gym owners that can move outside may not choose to do so. They say limits would force them to operate at an untenable loss, leaving them to choose between operating indoors in violation of public health orders or going out of business. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra is being remembered as a family man with a complex and troubled life.“He’d always keep a smile on his face regardless of whatever he was going through," Abril Huerta told ABC 10News.Ibarra, 25, was shot and killed after allegedly pointing a revolver at a San Diego Police Department officer in Downtown San Diego on Saturday night.According to police, officers recognized Ibarra from a wanted poster in connection with a robbery that happened last week. Police said officers tried to talk with Ibarra but he walked away.Ibarra then dropped some items from his arms and "reached into his waistband," according to police. That's when officers, fearing for their lives, opened fire, police said.RELATED: SDPD release surveillance video, body cam footage from officer-involved shooting in Downtown San DiegoABC 10News asked Huerta if Ibarra was known to carry a weapon. She said Ibarra "wasn’t a saint" and that he had a "complicated background."Ibarra was sentenced to three years in prison stemming from a domestic abuse case in 2013, according to court records obtained by ABC 10News.Huerta, who said she was the love of Ibarra’s life, told ABC 10News that he leaves behind three children.“He loved his family," Huerta told 10News in a statement. "He was the most loyal individual you could ever meet and he’d give you the shirt off his back if you were in need."“He only wanted to defend himself from any harm that were to come his way,” she said. The police department has not released the names of the officers involved in the shooting.
