At Otra Vez Cantina in downtown Denver, workers use a lot of avocados. “We order about 15 cases a week," says general manager Kiersten Klaus. "More when we’re expecting to be busy."In less than a month, however, one of this restaurant’s top products have tripled in price.“We were going from 0 to 0 a week to ,500 dollars a week in avocados,” Klaus says.Klaus says the reasons for the price jump range from the fear of new international tariffs to a bad growing season in Mexico, which is America’s main supplier of avocados. Down the street at Benny’s Restaurant, they’re experiencing the same avocado economics. General manager Leonardo Armas says the increased cost is now cutting into his bottom line.“It’s crazy,” he says. “But you got to do what you got to do.”Armas says his sources south of the border tell him crooks are now trying to cash in on avocados. “I hear some crazy stories that cartels that will grab little trucks, take over them, steal a bunch of avocados, because they’re worth a lot of money over there,” he says.Avoprice.com--a Mexican-based produce monitoring group--says some avocado trucks have been hijacked, but that the main reasons for higher prices are low supply and a growing demand. Both restaurants say they won’t pass this extra cost of avocados on to their customers. Buying avocados on your own, however, isn’t as financially forgiving. At a popular national grocery chain, who requested we not use its name, avocado prices have gone up 96 percent in the past few weeks. Now, some customers are experiencing a little sticker shock when it comes to buying avocados, saying it’s impacting their shopping. “Even though I’m addicted to avocados, I won’t buy them until the price comes down,” says shopper Kate Abany. 1769

An ICE officer opened fire and wounded a man in a Tennessee grocery store parking lot as the officer attempted to make an immigration arrest Thursday. The officer fired two shots after a driver he was trying to arrest during a fugitive operation drove toward the officer while fleeing the scene, ICE spokesman Bryan Cox said, citing initial reports. While ICE operations are a regular occurrence across the United States, it's rare to hear of shots fired in public places as they unfold. The FBI said a Mexican national was struck by gunfire in a Food Lion parking lot outside Nashville in Antioch. He turned himself in later and was receiving medical attention at a local hospital. The individual was not arrested and has not been charged by the FBI."Conclusions about the shooting incident should not be drawn until the investigation is complete," the agency said.An FBI spokesperson earlier said the agency is now investigating a possible assault on a federal officer. The FBI is the lead agency in the investigation, Cox said, and federal prosecutors will decide whether any criminal charges are filed.ICE's Office of Professional Responsibility, which looks into all officer-involved shootings involving ICE, also is investigating, Cox said.Investigators cordoned off the parking lot with crime scene tape and combed the scene for evidence. The target of Thursday's ICE operation was a 39-year-old Mexican national who'd been deported multiple times, Cox said. The truck he was driving is now in FBI custody, said Matt Foster, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI's Nashville office. The vehicle was found abandoned with blood inside, an ICE official said.Nashville Mayor David Briley slammed the shooting in a statement, 1741

An Iowa State fan who used his viral moment to raise over million for a children’s hospital is being rewarded with a year’s supply of Busch Light – featuring his own face. Busch unveiled the special “Iowa Legend” beer can on Twitter and said they would be sending a truck of the cans to the fan, Carson King. King went viral on Sept. 14 when he was featured in the background of the announcers on ESPN’s “College Game Day,” holding a sign that read “Busch Light Supply Needs Replenished” along with his Venmo name. Afterwards, viewers started sending money to King and the donations soon reached thousands of dollars. Realizing he couldn’t drink that much beer, he decided to donate the money to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Tuesday morning, King tweeted that the total contributions reached more than .12 million after Busch and Venmo match the amount he has raised. But King isn’t stopping there. He hopes to hit million in donations by the end of the month. 1009

BERLIN — Germany is banning so-called gay conversion therapy for minors, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman said Wednesday, saying the practice that purports to make patients straight has no scientific basis and often causes psychological harm.Merkel’s Cabinet also outlawed the use of conversion therapy with adults who have diminished decision-making capabilities and barred advertisements for conversion therapy services, spokesman Steffen Seibert told reporters.“The government’s goal is to protect people’s right to sexual self-determination,” Seibert said.In a later Facebook posting headlined “Homosexuality is not an illness,” the government said anyone violating the ban could face punishments ranging from fines to prison. It also expanded on how the ban applied to adults, saying sexual orientation change efforts could not be conducted with anyone whose participation was based on “subterfuge, erroneous information, pressure or threats.”LGBT advocacy group OutRight Action International said in an August report that the European nation of Malta fully banned conversion therapy. The group reported that Cyprus, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Switzerland had partial bans.Therapy to change a person’s sexual orientation also is prohibited in multiple U.S. states and Puerto Rico. 1308
