CARSLBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- If there's anyone in Carlsbad that knows food, it Cheri Poulos. Poulos is the founder of Carlsbad Food Tours, a tour that gives locals and tourists a taste of the city. Poulos has a blog where she writes about the best places to eat in the city. The food lover offers two different types of tours, one called the Taste of Carlsbad and one called the Indulgence Food tour. Private tours are also available. 10News went along with Poulos for one of the food tours. The first stop was at Gregorio's Italian Kitchen, known for giving back to the community. At one point, the restaurant donated all of their proceeds to the Boys and Girls Club. From Gregorio's the tour continued to Caldo Pomodoro, home to what some call the best garlic bread in the county. Portraits of Caldo Pomodoro's owners hang over the entrance of the restaurant. The restaurant's founders are a borther and sister duo, Fran and Gina. Fran was a Hollywood hairdresser and pictures of his clients adorn the walls of the restaurant. Fran has since passed away, his sister Gina now runs the restuarant. The tour also includes some stops at several sweet spots, including a gourmet donut shop called, The Goods. The Goods is the sister restaurant of Cafe Topes, a staple in town known for their cinnamon rolls. Both locations are run by the Barille family. The tour then continues to Gelato Love, a family-run gelato shop. The shop is owned by Paola Richard and her cousin, Christina. Gelato Love is the only shop in the entire country that doesn't use any added sugar, only sugar from the fruit itself. The tour also stops at other local favorites like Vigilucci's Gourmet Market, Witch Creek Winery and Humble Olive Oils. The tour operates daily, seven days a week. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — Lights, camera, action!Camp Pendleton service members and families were treated to a special visit Wednesday, as actor Mark Wahlberg, known for his support of military members behind the cameras, stopped in to visit.Wahlberg participated in a meet and greet at the base's Pacific View Exchange as part of a tour to visit service members and their families, according to the base.Video posted to Twitter by Camp Pendleton showed the actor mingling with the troops and signing autographs for families. 539
CARLSBAD, Calif. (CNS) - The city of Carlsbad announced Thursday it was temporarily suspending its collection fees for sidewalk cafes, outdoor displays and curbside cafe permits to help businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.This suspension of permit fees also means reimbursement of around ,000 to businesses that paid for these types of permits since March 1 of this year. Fee reimbursement and the revenue offset from the suspension of fee collection will be funded from the Economic Recovery and Revitalization Initiative funds. Of those funds, 5,000 remains for contingency or future city council actions.When the pandemic's public health orders required the closure of indoor operations, Carlsbad relaxed development standards to allow businesses to use these permits to quickly activate outdoor spaces on public sidewalks. Some businesses were also granted no-cost permits allowing them to use private property such as their parking lots, to add to their existing outdoor areas.On July 28, the City Council also relaxed standards for curbside cafes, allowing restaurants to use up to four street parking stalls to expand outdoor dining.The permits normally cost a one-time payment of 1 and ,200 per parking stall per year. These fees are now temporarily suspended until February 28, 2021, or for the duration of the local COVID-19 pandemic emergency, whichever is later.More than 70 businesses have been permitted, including restaurants, fitness classes, hair and nail salons, spas and churches, allowing them to temporarily move their operations outdoors onto private property, public sidewalks and on-street public parking spaces so that they can comply with public health guidelines.According to a statement from the city, even with the county now allowing indoor dining, retail shopping or fitness classes, capacity has been reduced by 50% to 90%, depending on the type of business. CARLSBAD (KGTV) - Among the businesses saying Trump's trade war is hurting is San Diego born JLab, a booming audio company competing with huge brands.The Silicon Valley-style company in Carlsbad is buzzing as you walk through the large modern rectangular door."This company was four people four years ago, but now we're 40." CEO Win Cramer said they have lived the American Dream, saying they're a scrappy business always fighting to get on top."We worked out of literally, a house, or a rundown office or an apartment building forever," he said. JLab competes against major brands like Bose and Beats.They found a niche and made a name for themselves, "We came out with some fun colorful designs that happened to be on trend."Cramer said innovation is their secret weapon."It gives you the option to really tune out on a plane, you push a button and the engine noise goes away," explaining one of their earbuds.Their newest challenge is Trump's trade war. Billions of dollars in tariffs imposed on China are going into effect, and while all of the design work is done in Carlsbad, 100% of JLab's product is shipped from China.Cramer was sitting on a plane when he saw the alert, "this news pops up on my phone that 0 billion in tariffs announced, I quickly perused the list and saw our tariff code that we import 80% of our products was on the list and I just had this feeling of oh gosh we're going to have to fight this battle that we don't know how to fight."He is bending every ear within reach to spread awareness of how this affects JLab and other American businesses and even went to Washington DC to plead his case.Cramer said no legislators were there, just staffers and no electronic devices were allowed into the room. He said there is a written record of what was said."It was the largest hearing in US history which in it of itself should tell you something and how folks are, at least businesses like us are taking this pretty serious," he said.Production costs could increase by 25% and with the holiday season upon us, he's running out of options, "layoffs or pay cuts being the last option, certainly not something that I want to do or think about or consider, but it's something we're being forced to consider."He hopes change is swift and those in power hear his plea.He said the company will find out in mid-September how big the changes will be, and will see impacts as early as October. CARLSBAD (KGTV) - A new online tool is helping Carlsbad residents voice their opinions on issues and how they prefer their tax dollars spent.Voterfied allows voters to weigh in from their phone or computer. "Who can shout the loudest," was what Carlsbad?Mayor Matt Hall said happened at City Council meetings. "That's not what's best for government, you try to engage as many people as possible," saying the silent majority often went unheard."Their vote goes straight into the elected official's ear, and then the elected official is held accountable because they know how their constituents are voting," COO of Voterfied Lee Ann Allman said.The tool was created when Michael Allman ran for Congress. He wanted a way to easily plug in and crowd source, to discover the needs of the people.Voterfied reached out to Hall first and he held onto the experiment with both hands, "everybody has this equal opportunity, they can hear my voice and I can hear their voice." Lee Ann Allman said there is also an educational component to the tool, "there are links to articles so if a voter wants to find out more about something they can click on the link,"The tool is hack proof and compares information you input to the voter registry, focusing the questions they push out on specific residents.In the six or more months Hall's been testing Voterfied, Carlsbad is already seeing an impact. "Instead of having a community center, the public thought more about having a dog park," Hall said.Carlsbad's next big change? Hall let on future plans could mean a dog beach.As for the future of Voterfied, it's virtually limitless."I think it has great potential," Hall said.Allman hopes to see, "this being adopted by elected officials all over the country, and it can be used at any level."Voterfied's mission statement: 1900
