(AP) -- California's earthquake early warnings will be a standard feature on all Android phones, bypassing the need for users to download the state's MyShake app in order to receive alerts.The Governor's Office of Emergency Services worked with Google, the maker of Android, to build the quake alerts into all phones that run the operating system.The technology does not predict earthquakes. It is designed to take data from seismic sensors and send warnings to potentially affected areas if projected shaking is at a certain level of intensity.The MyShake technology was developed by the University of California, Berkeley, and released in 2019. 673

Ralph Northam compared the Confederate school names to Confederate statues, saying they have a traumatizing impact on students, families, teachers and staff of all backgrounds."When our public schools are named after individuals who advanced slavery and systemic racism, and we allow those names to remain on school property, we tacitly endorse their values as our own. (AP) — California corrections officials say they arrested 110 sex offender parolees during an annual Halloween sweep designed to keep the offenders from contacting children or engaging in other Halloween activities.That's about 9 percent of the 1,252 parolees contacted statewide Wednesday.Officials said Thursday that eight parolees face new charges while the rest allegedly violated conditions of their parole.Thirty offenders were found with pornography, including two with child porn. Thirty-one had narcotics, drug paraphernalia or violated other parole conditions. Thirteen were found with weapons.It's the 25th year for the Halloween sweeps dubbed "Operation Boo."Officials say hundreds of parole agents and local law enforcement officers participated in the crackdown involving searches and compliance checks on sex offender parolees. 869

Richard Cordray is stepping down from his post leading the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.Cordray said Wednesday that he plans to resign as director at the end of the month."It has been a joy of my life to have the opportunity to serve our country as the first director of the Consumer Bureau by working alongside all of you here. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to quarantine for 10 days after one of his staffers tested positive for COVID-19. A spokesperson for the governor's office stated the staffer tested positive Sunday afternoon. Newsom was tested after those results and his test came back negative. The statement says the governor's 10-day quarantine is out of “an abundance of caution.” Another person in the governor's office tested positive in October, and the governor tested negative back then. Last month, members of Newsom's family were exposed to someone who tested positive for the virus. Newsom, his wife and four children tested negative at that time. 685
