(AP) — California prosecutors announced Wednesday they will seek the death penalty if they convict the man suspected of being the notorious "Golden State Killer" who eluded capture for decades.The move comes less than a month after Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a moratorium on executing any of the 737 inmates on the nation's largest death row. Newsom's reprieve lasts only so long as he is governor and does not prevent prosecutors from seeking nor judges and juries from imposing death sentences.Prosecutors from four counties briefly announced their decision one after another during a short court hearing for Joseph DeAngelo, jailed as the suspected "Golden State Killer." Gavin Newsom has signed legislation banning two dozen toxic chemicals from being used in cosmetics — making the state the first in the nation to prohibit the use of the hazardous ingredients for that purpose. The Toxic Free Cosmetics Act bans 24 chemicals starting in 2025. It was authored by Democratic Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, who called it a landmark bill. Robert Grays was having the game of his life on Saturday as his Midwestern State University squad was beating Texas A&M-Kingsville 35-13. The 19-year-old sophomore had matched a career-high with seven tackles, with his team about to improve to 2-0 on the season. Saturday ended up being Grays' final game.  With 3:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, Grays went in for a tackle, severely injuring his neck. After being transported to Houston for treatment, Grays died on Tuesday from the injury. Grays was the squad's starting cornerback, and also played on special teams. Grays was a graduate of Fort Bend L.V. Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas."We are saddened by the loss of Robert Grays, one of our own. This is not an easy time for anyone associated with the football program," MSU coach Bill Maskill said. "He was a tremendous individual. ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A statue of abolitionist Frederick Douglass has been ripped from its base in Rochester on the anniversary of one of his most famous speeches.Police say the statue of Douglass was taken from Maplewood Park and placed near the Genesee River gorge on Sunday.On July 5, 1852, Douglass gave the speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” in Rochester. There was no indication the vandalism was timed to the anniversary.The park was a site on the Underground Railroad where Douglass and Harriet Tubman helped shuttle slaves to freedom.Leaders involved in the statue’s creation tell WROC that they believe the nation’s ongoing focus on race could have played a role in the vandalism.The project director of Re-energize the Legacy of Fredrick Douglass, Carvin Eison, questions whether the damage is some type of retaliation because of the calls to take down Confederate statues.WROC reports that the statue is one of 13 placed throughout Rochester in 2018, and it’s the second figure to be vandalized since then.The damaged statue has been taken for repairs. 1082
