John Kelly is expected to resign as White House chief of staff in the coming days, two sources familiar with the situation unfolding in the West Wing tell CNN.Seventeen months in, Kelly and President Donald Trump have reached a stalemate in their relationship and it is no longer seen as tenable by either party. Though Trump asked Kelly over the summer to stay on as chief of staff for two more years, the two have stopped speaking in recent days.Trump is actively discussing a replacement plan, though a person involved in the process said nothing is final right now and ultimately it is up to Trump. Potential replacements include Nick Ayers, Vice President Mike Pence's chief of staff, who is still seen as a leading contender.News of Kelly's imminent departure was first reported by Axios.Kelly has seen his status as chief of staff diminished in recent months, with the President circumventing many of the policies and protocols the retired Marine Corps general put in place when he entered the West Wing last year.In July, Kelly announced to White House staff that Trump had asked him to stay on as chief of staff until at least 2020, and that he had agreed.CNN reported last month that Trump was considering potential replacements for several senior positions in his administration as part of a post-midterms staff shakeup.The-CNN-Wire 1351

Kim Jong Un has become the first North Korean leader to step into South Korean territory since 1953, crossing the demarcation line separating the nations for a historic summit on Friday morning. He was greeted by South Korean President Moon Jae-in and the two leaders shook hands, before walking along a red carpet to the Peace House for the first meeting between the leaders of the divided Koreas since 2007.Both men traveled to the demilitarized zone (DMZ) on Friday for a full day of talks on three subjects with worldwide implications -- the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, a peace settlement and the improvement of bilateral relations.Crowds of supporters, holding signs calling for denuclearization, had waved off the South Korean President as he left his residence in Seoul and his motorcade's hour-long drive north towards the DMZ was broadcast live to the world.Huge banners have been displayed across the South Korean capital of Seoul proclaiming "Peace, a new start" amid rumors the two leaders could discuss signing an official peace treaty finally ending the Korean War.Kim would "open-heartedly discuss" all the issues with Moon, and was entering talks with the hope of "achieving peace prosperity and reunification of the Korean Peninsula," North Korean state media KCNA said. The summit is the result of months of diplomatic wrangling and negotiating on the part of Moon, a longtime advocate of peace between the Koreas. It will also set the stage for the first meeting between a sitting US president and North Korean leader when Donald Trump and Kim meet in May or June. However, stakes are high and some observers are doubtful the two sides can bridge the gap created by 60 years of antagonism and suspicion.Official talks are scheduled to begin at 10.20 a.m. local time (9.20 p.m. ET Thursday). 1828

JERUSALEM (AP) — The international force that monitors the four-decade-old Israeli-Egyptian peace agreement has confirmed the deaths of eight peacekeepers in a helicopter crash in Egypt's Sinai region. The Multinational Force and Observers said six Americans, a French and a Czech were killed. It said a ninth peacekeeper survived and was evacuated for medical treatment.Names of the deceased are being withheld until next of kin are notified of the deaths. The force says “all indications” are that the crash was an accident, but it will still be investigated to determine a cause. The peacekeepers are responsible for monitoring troops levels and protecting free navigation in the area.Thirteen countries contribute troops to the force, with the U.S. providing the largest contingent.Acting Secretary of Defense Chris Miller issued this statement regarding the deaths: 875

JAPATUL VALLEY (CNS) - Firefighters battled for a fourth day Tuesday to subdue a Santa Ana-driven wildfire that blackened thousands of acres in rural eastern San Diego County over the Labor Day weekend, leveling about a dozen homes and forcing widespread evacuations. The blaze erupted for unknown reasons early Saturday afternoon off Spirit Trail in Japatul Valley, near Alpine, according to Cal Fire. The flames had spread over an estimated 17,565 acres and destroyed at least 11 residences and 25 outbuildings Tuesday, the state agency reported. The fire is now 11% contained. Dry, whipping winds out of the east made efforts to control the blaze, dubbed the Valley Fire, extremely urgent and challenging."It's supposed to really kick off this afternoon," Cal Fire Capt. Thomas Shoots said of the dangerously arid, hot, and gusty conditions prevailing in the county.RELATED COVERAGEINTERACTIVE MAP: Valley Fire erupts in Japatul Valley areaPHOTOS: Valley Fire erupts in East CountySocial media reaction to Valley FireCheck today's weather forecast in your areaThe fire has resulted in two injuries, officials said. "Please do not bring horses to any other evacuation sites. They are at capacity. Our Emergency Response Team is standing by to help," the society said. Early Tuesday afternoon, San Diego Gas & Electric advised East County residents that public-safety power outages might become necessary due to the potential for weather-related utility combustion hazards. The Jamul-Dulzura Union School District announced Tuesday that it will remain closed through the end of the week due to the Valley Fire. Due to power outages in the area, the Mountain Empire Unified School District also said it won’t have live online instruction tomorrow, September 9. The U.S. Forest Service closed Cleveland National Forest indefinitely to keep the public out of harm's way. Eight national forests were closed across California due to ongoing fire danger, including the Angeles National Forest, San Bernardino National Forest, Los Padres National Forest, Inyo National Forest, Sequoia National Forest, Sierra National Forest and Stanislaus National Forest. #ValleyFire [update] Please see below for the latest update. pic.twitter.com/o9UEDQzPLV— CAL FIRE/SAN DIEGO COUNTY FIRE (@CALFIRESANDIEGO) September 8, 2020 Among the imminently threatened communities in San Diego County were the back-country towns of Carveacre, Lawson Valley, Wood Valley, Lyons Valley and Deerhorn Valley, as well as Sycuan Indian Reservation. As of Tuesday morning, SDG&E reported power outages affecting 2,258 customers in the fire area, including parts of Dulzura, Potrero, Campo, Jamul, North Jamul, Lyons Valley, Barrett Lake, Dehesa, Alpine, Rancho Palo Verde, Buckman Springs and Morena Village. As the inferno spread, Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for San Diego County, freeing up federal relief funds. The San Diego County Pollution Control District issued an alert, stating that air quality levels were unhealthy in parts of the region due to the conflagration. The agency advised people to limit outdoor activities until the smoky conditions dissipate. The cause of the fire was under investigation. 4017
