SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some former students of Brightwood College finally have something to celebrate after their school shut down earlier this month.Town & Country San Diego Mission Valley, where the graduation was scheduled to held, will now host the ceremony free of charge.Karlene Carpenter is one of those students looking forward to the graduation ceremony. She spent countless hours with her classmates, studying and preparing for the next phase of their lives. "The curiculum was amazing. I got the best education there," Carpenter said.RELATED: Brightwood College announces sudden closure amid accreditation, financial turmoilBrightwood suddenly shut down, citing accreditation and financial problems. This happened a few days before Carpenter was scheduled to finish the program. Teachers stepped in to help. Carpenter said some clinical instructors worked for free to help them finish. "My last term was straight A's," Carpenter said. At first, it looked like the graduation ceremony scheduled for January 18th at Town & Country San Diego in Mission Valley was not going to happen since the school was out of business."We still had the date booked, but there was no way to pay for it," Carpenter said. "I went to school a little later in life. You want to walk across that stage, you want to wear your cap and gown, you want to participate in the pinning ceremony inducting you into nursing."Then came a little holiday cheer thanks to Santa's helpers, in the form of Town & Country staff. "We have extended to them a complimentary graduation. Everyone in their families can see them and just really enjoy what they worked so hard for," said Susan Penman, director of sales and marketing at the facility. From stressful classes to a sudden college shutdown, it was the news Carpenter was more than happy to hear. "Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My entire class and all of these students are just elated. It was basically a Christmas miracle," she said. 1988

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday, Dec. 8 will be the tenth year since a tragedy in the heart of University City.Four people died in 2008 when an FA-18 military jet crashed into homes in the San Diego community west of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.Rebecca Cosford was in her home and heard two loud noises. The first was the pilot blowing out the plane’s canopy and ejecting. The second sound was the crash.“One was popping, then a massive explosion that shook the whole house,” Cosford remembers.Cosford and her husband ran outside to see a “large column of smoke”.Teresa Rizzo not only heard it: she felt it. Someone yelled at her to stay back and told her a plane had crashed."I just thought, 'That was an airplane?’ That was an actual airplane that fell out of the sky and exploded around the corner from my house?"Marine pilot Dan Neubauer’s parachute landed a block west of the crash site after he ejected. He had been trying to reach MCAS Miramar on one engine, but his second engine failed. The FA-18 dropped like a stone. The four lives lost on the ground were Dong Yoon’s family."I believe my wife and two babies and my mother-in-law are in heaven with God," Yoon said after the crash.Neighbors had tried to help when disaster struck. Alain Blanc had a cell phone in one hand, 911 on the line. His other hand was holding a hose as firefighters arrived."There are moments we don't have time to be scared, you react! I heard this incredible bang, the earth shook, and I was outside. How I got there, don't ask me," said Blanc.Today, two new homes stand where the other two were destroyed. One thing is the same: the sound of roaring jets."Not that far but when they're close, when it's the same elements as it was that day: overcast, the middle of the day, cool temperatures and a plane flies really close by, my heart still races."Many neighbors told 10News they plan to attend a memorial which will be held Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. at University Village Park. 1982

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Since moving to San Diego three years ago, Angela Alean says her financial situation has been like a rollercoaster.“It has been like ups and downs,” she said.By night, she’s a student learning childhood development. By day, she’s an assistant teacher at a preschool in Pacific Beach. She’d like to become a lead teacher one day, but her education has left her with more than ,000 in student debt. Her financial goal is to pay that debt off as fast as possible. Alean is one of several San Diegans 10News will follow for the next year to monitor their successes and struggles while attempting to accomplish a financial goal.“When I think about me not having debt, I think about the possibility of me studying more, learning more about child development, learning more about how to work in a preschool, about better ways to teach children,” she said.Alean knew she needed a lesson in financial management and budgeting, so she turned to free lessons on YouTube. Now she closely tracks her expenses and spending, she’s on a “rice and beans” food budget, and she picked up a second job as a tutor.“I’m willing to make the sacrifice. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to live here because I want to make San Diego my home,” she said.If you have a significant financial goal and you'd like to share it with us, email tips@10news.com. 1357
